How Much Does a Trip to Japan Cost? 12-Day Budgets for 2026-27Trip planning

How much does a trip to Japan cost?

By · Published

A 12-day trip to Japan costs roughly $1,700 to $2,500 per person on a budget and $3,000 to $4,500 mid-range, including a return flight from the US. On the ground that is about $70 to $120 a day for a budget traveller and $150 to $250 mid-range, the same ranges as our daily travel budget by country. The weak yen (around ¥157 to the dollar in late October 2026) makes Japan cheaper in dollar terms than a decade ago, but rooms and long Shinkansen rides still add up fast. We spent 33 days in Japan in March and April 2023, from Tokyo through Hakone, Matsumoto, Takayama, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Nara and Osaka to Hiroshima, so the route below follows ground we covered. The figures are typical 2026 prices from operators and travel-cost sources, not what we spent.

Japan trip cost at a glance (12 days, per person)

The totals assume a 12-day first trip on the classic line: Tokyo, Hakone or the Japan Alps, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka and a Hiroshima day. That is roughly the shape of our 10-day Japan itinerary with two slower days added.

• Budget: about $840 to $1,440 on the ground, plus the flight. Dorm beds or capsule hotels, convenience-store breakfasts, set-meal lunches, IC-card transit and two or three Shinkansen legs bought as single tickets.

• Mid-range: about $1,800 to $3,000 on the ground, plus the flight. Business hotels or small ryokan for a night, sit-down dinners, more paid sights and a rail pass if your route justifies it.

• Comfort: start above the mid-range ceiling of about $250 a day. Western-brand hotels in Tokyo and Kyoto and a kaiseki dinner at a ryokan push the daily figure well past that; there is no useful upper limit.

Two people sharing a room cut the accommodation line nearly in half, which is the biggest single lever on a mid-range Japan trip.

Flights: the line you control least

• From the US: airline fare pages from ANA, JAL and EVA Air in 2026 show economy returns to Tokyo mostly between about $800 and $1,600, with West Coast departures at the low end. A 2026 ShopBack fare analysis puts February as the cheapest month and says cherry blossom season, Golden Week and New Year carry large premiums.

• From the UK: Korean Air and JAL fare pages show London to Tokyo returns from roughly £900 to £1,250 (≈ $1,198–1,664) for 2026 dates.

• From Australia: Cathay Pacific and Philippine Airlines listed Sydney to Tokyo returns from about AUD 1,200 for late 2026 dates, with JAL and ANA nearer AUD 1,850 to 2,400.

Since 1 July 2026 Japan's international tourist tax (departure tax) is ¥3,000 (≈ $19.0) instead of ¥1,000 (≈ $6.3); it is built into the ticket, see Japan's departure tax. Haneda is closer to central Tokyo than Narita, which can offset a slightly higher fare: compare in Haneda vs Narita. For timing, read how far in advance to book international flights.

Accommodation: the biggest daily cost

Tokyo dorm beds run roughly ¥3,000 to ¥7,000 (≈ $19.0–44) a night, more during cherry blossom season. Business hotels with a small private room are the mid-range default in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Osaka is usually cheaper than Kyoto for the same standard, which is why many people base in Osaka and day-trip; see where to stay in Osaka and where to stay in Kyoto.

Add local accommodation taxes. Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto charge per-person, per-night taxes that rise with the room rate, and Kyoto raised its rates in March 2026: the bands are in Kyoto's accommodation tax. On a budget room the tax is small; on a luxury room in Kyoto it is a real line item.

Our own route spent two nights in Hakone between Tokyo and Matsumoto. Hakone ryokan with private onsen are among the most expensive nights in the country, so a budget trip either day-trips there or picks a simple inn; see where to stay in Hakone.

Transport: rail pass or single tickets

The Japan Rail Pass costs ¥50,000 (≈ $317) for 7 days in ordinary class on the official site, and JR Group announced a rise to about ¥53,000 (≈ $336) from 1 October 2026 for passes sold through agents; check the official Japan Rail Pass site for the price you will actually pay. A reserved Tokyo to Kyoto Nozomi seat costs roughly ¥14,000 (≈ $89) one way, so a Tokyo to Kyoto return alone is about ¥28,000 (≈ $177). The pass only wins when you add a long leg such as Hiroshima within the same week. Run your own route through is the Japan Rail Pass worth it and the Shinkansen ticket guide.

Inside cities, an IC card covers subways and buses; budget a few hundred yen per ride. Set it up with the Suica and Pasmo guide or Suica on your phone. In Hakone, the Hakone Freepass bundles the loop of trains, cable cars and boats. Taxis are the expensive exception: see Japan taxis.

Sending a suitcase ahead with luggage forwarding costs money but can save a taxi on the far end.

Food, sights and the small extras

Food is where Japan is cheaper than its reputation. Convenience-store breakfasts, ramen, gyudon and set meals keep a budget day low; the konbini guide, teishoku vs tonkatsu and Japanese grocery stores show how. City-specific picks are in what to eat in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. There is no tipping: see tipping in Japan and South Korea.

Most shrines and many temple grounds are free, which keeps sightseeing cheap in Kyoto and Nara. The big paid extras are theme parks and timed attractions: Universal Studios Japan Express Pass and teamLab in Tokyo can each add more than a budget day.

Data and insurance: an eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi is a small line next to the rail fare; compare them in pocket Wi-Fi vs eSIM in Japan. Price travel insurance once you know the trip value, since a non-refundable rail pass and flight are the expensive parts.

How to bring the total down

• Fly in a shoulder month. Avoid late March to early April blossom, Golden Week (late April to early May) and New Year; see best time to visit Tokyo and Golden Week 2027.

• Base in Osaka, not Kyoto, and day-trip to Kyoto and Nara.

• Skip the rail pass unless your week includes Hiroshima or further.

• Travel slower. Our own route used regional stops like Takayama and Kanazawa between the big cities; fewer long legs cost less than zig-zagging.

Cash is still useful in smaller towns: plan withdrawals with how much cash to bring to Japan. If you are weighing Japan against its neighbour, read Japan vs South Korea and how much a trip to South Korea costs.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 2-week trip to Japan cost?

Roughly $70 to $120 a day on a budget and $150 to $250 mid-range on the ground, so about $840 to $1,440 or $1,800 to $3,000 for 12 days, plus a return flight that is often $800 to $1,600 from the US.

Is $3,000 enough for a trip to Japan?

For a 12-day budget trip, usually yes, including the flight from the US. For mid-range travel it covers the ground costs but not the flight as well.

Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it?

Only if one week includes long legs such as Tokyo to Kyoto and on to Hiroshima. A Tokyo to Kyoto Nozomi return alone is about ¥28,000 (≈ $177) against a 7-day pass of ¥50,000 (≈ $317) or more.

What is the most expensive part of a Japan trip?

Accommodation, then long-distance Shinkansen fares and the flight. Food is cheaper than its reputation thanks to convenience stores and set meals.
