Where to Stay in Kanazawa: Station, Korinbo or Higashi Chaya?Where to stay

Where should you stay in Kanazawa?

By · Published

Stay near Kanazawa Station for a short stop with onward trains and buses; stay in Korinbo or Katamachi for 2 or more nights. The station is where the Hokuriku Shinkansen and the highway bus to Shirakawa-go and Takayama leave, but it is a 2 km walk from Kenroku-en and the old districts. Korinbo and Katamachi sit in the middle of the city, with the castle park, Kenroku-en, Nagamachi and the dinner streets all on foot. We spent 4 days in Kanazawa from late March to early April 2023, arriving from Takayama, with a day trip to Shirakawa-go recorded in our route, before going on to Kyoto.

Quick pick by traveler type

• First visit, 2 to 3 nights: Korinbo or Katamachi, central and walkable.

• One night, or early buses and trains: Kanazawa Station.

• Quiet and romantic: Higashi Chaya and the Asano River side, in a small inn or machiya.

• Nightlife and dinner: Katamachi and the Kigura-machi lanes behind it, the city's izakaya and bar district.

• Families: the station area or Korinbo, for larger hotel rooms and simple bus connections.

• Budget: the station area and the streets toward Omicho Market, where most hostels and business hotels are.

Kanazawa Station: best for transit

What it's like: the modern east exit with its wooden Tsuzumi-mon gate, chain hotels on both sides, and a large shopping and food floor inside the station. Omicho Market is about a 15-minute walk toward the center.

Who it suits: short stays and anyone with an early departure. The Hokuriku Shinkansen to Tokyo takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, and Kyoto is about 2 hours via the Shinkansen to Tsuruga and the Thunderbird. The Nohi Bus and Hokutetsu highway bus to Shirakawa-go and Takayama leaves from the west exit; our Kanazawa to Takayama bus guide covers reservations and fares.

Downside: Kenroku-en, Higashi Chaya and Nagamachi are all a bus ride or a 25 to 35-minute walk away, and the evenings around the station are mostly chain restaurants.

Korinbo and Katamachi: the best base for most visitors

What it's like: the commercial heart of the city, between the castle park and the Sai River. Korinbo has department stores and hotels; Katamachi, a few minutes south, is the main dining and drinking district, with the Kigura-machi lanes of small bars behind it. The Nagamachi samurai district is a short walk west.

Who it suits: most people staying 2 nights or more. You can walk to Kenroku-en for the early opening our Kanazawa guide recommends, to Nagamachi's mud-walled lanes, and back for dinner without a bus. Our guide names this area for exactly that.

Downside: the bars in Katamachi keep going late, so ask for a room on a higher floor or away from the main road. Getting to the station with bags means a bus or taxi.

Where exactly. Rooms between Korinbo and the castle park's south side give the shortest walk to Kenroku-en's early gate; rooms nearer Katamachi's main crossing give the shortest walk home from dinner. Either way, Omicho Market is a 10 to 15-minute walk north for a seafood breakfast, and the bus stops on the main road run back to the station when you leave.

Higashi Chaya and Kazuemachi: the old teahouse districts

What it's like: two-story wooden teahouses with timber lattice fronts on stone-paved streets across the Asano River, where geisha still perform in the evenings and tea rooms serve matcha with gold-leaf sweets by day. Kazuemachi is a single quieter row along the river.

Who it suits: couples and photographers who want the lanes before the day crowds and after the shops close. Small inns and machiya rentals are the typical stay here.

Downside: few rooms, often with shared bathrooms, futons and stairs, and a limited choice of dinner nearby once the tea rooms shut. It is a walk or short bus ride to Kenroku-en and further to the station.

Kenroku-en and the museum quarter

What it's like: the green middle of the city: Kanazawa Castle Park, Kenroku-en, and the museums on the hill beside it. There are only a few hotels and ryokan right here.

Who it suits: garden lovers who want to be at Kenroku-en's gates at first light, especially in cherry blossom season in early April or for the yukitsuri ropes in winter.

Downside: limited choice and quiet evenings. In practice, Korinbo is close enough to get most of the same benefit with far more rooms.

Booking advice for Kanazawa

Buses, not trains, inside the city. Kanazawa has no subway, and the sights are spread across about 2 km. City buses from the station's east exit cover the loop of sights, so check the nearest stop to any hotel outside the center.

Seasons. Early April for cherry blossom in Kenroku-en and November for maples are the busiest weeks; winter brings snow, the yukitsuri and crab season at Omicho, and generally lower room prices outside holidays. Since the Shinkansen extension to Tsuruga in 2024, Kanazawa is also on more first-trip routes, so book ahead in spring.

Luggage. If you are taking the Shirakawa-go bus on to Takayama or arriving from it, forward big bags between hotels; our luggage forwarding guide explains how.

How many nights, and where it fits

Plan 2 nights, or 3 with a day trip. Our 4 days were generous; the main sights, Kenroku-en, the chaya districts, Nagamachi, the castle park and Omicho, fit into two full days. Our how many days in Kanazawa and day trips from Kanazawa guides cover the extra time, and what to eat in Kanazawa covers Omicho's seafood bowls.

On our 33-day Japan route, Kanazawa came after Takayama and before Kyoto. That order makes the station area useful at both ends: the bus in from Shirakawa-go arrives there, and the train to Kyoto leaves from there. For the next stop, see where to stay in Kyoto.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay near Kanazawa Station or in the city center?

The station for one night or early trains and buses. Korinbo or Katamachi for 2 nights or more, since Kenroku-en, Nagamachi and the dinner streets are on foot.

Where should I stay in Kanazawa for nightlife?

Katamachi and the Kigura-machi lanes behind it, the city's main izakaya and bar district.

Can you stay in Higashi Chaya?

Yes, in a small number of inns and machiya rentals. It is the quietest, most atmospheric option, but rooms are few and dinner choices thin once the tea rooms close.

How many nights do you need in Kanazawa?

Two, or three with a day trip. We spent 4 days, which was generous; the main sights fit into two full days.
