May is the best month for Spain's inland and southern cities: Madrid highs of about 23.2°C (74°F), Seville about 28.2°C (83°F), long dry evenings, and the Córdoba patios and San Isidro in Madrid. It is also green on the Atlantic north, which means rain: San Sebastián gets about 126 mm and 12 rainy days in May. Summer heat has not started, but Seville already feels warm by mid-afternoon. We were in Spain from late June to August 2022, so we have not seen May ourselves; weather figures are 1991 to 2020 normals (AEMET stations where named) and festival dates are from the sources noted below.
• Weather: warm in the centre and south, cool and showery on the north coast.
• Best cities for May: Seville, Córdoba, Granada, Madrid and Valencia. Treat San Sebastián and Bilbao as 'bring a raincoat' stops.
• Crowds: high but well below July and August; terraces are full from late afternoon.
• Prices: shoulder season, with spikes during festivals.
• Festivals: the Córdoba patios, San Isidro in Madrid on 15 May, and the pilgrimage to El Rocío around Pentecost. Seville's Feria is in April in 2027.
• Skip May if: you want guaranteed beach weather; this month suits cities and countryside better.

AEMET 1991 to 2020 normals as listed for each city; the Madrid figure is the Retiro station, the others are airport or city stations.
• Madrid: highs 23.2°C (74°F), lows 11.9°C (53°F), about 48 mm. Big day-to-night swing, so a layer is useful.
• Seville: highs 28.2°C (83°F), lows 14.9°C (59°F), about 34 mm. Hot by afternoon; the old town is a morning and evening city.
• Granada: highs 25°C (77°F), lows 9.4°C (49°F), about 28 mm. Cool nights, and colder in the Sierra Nevada above the city.
• Valencia: highs 24°C (75°F), lows 15.1°C (59°F), about 36 mm. Mild, with sea breezes.
• Barcelona: highs 21.7°C (71°F), lows 13.8°C (57°F), about 42 mm. Pleasant but not yet beach weather.
• San Sebastián: highs 20.8°C (69°F), lows 12.3°C (54°F), about 126 mm and 12 rain days. The wettest of the group.
Nights in the interior are cool, so carry a light jacket even in May.
• 1 May (Saturday): Labour Day, a national holiday.
• Córdoba Patios Festival: the courtyards open in early to mid May. The 2026 edition ran 4 to 17 May; 2027 dates were not published in what I found, so check the city's tourism office.
• San Isidro, Madrid: Saturday 15 May 2027 is the city's local holiday, per Madrid's own calendar. As a local holiday, expect some shops and offices closed in the city.
• El Rocío: the pilgrimage in Huelva is tied to Pentecost, which falls on 16 May 2027, so expect it in mid May. I could not find a published 2027 date, so confirm it locally.
• Seville's Feria de Abril: mid April in 2027, so before May. Dates are in our Feria de Abril 2027 guide. Holy Week is earlier still, with Easter on 28 March 2027: see the Semana Santa 2027 guide.
The next national holiday after 1 May is 15 August.

We covered a lot of Spain in 2022: 4 days in Madrid, 2 to 3 each in Salamanca, Oviedo and Gijón, 5 in Barcelona, 4 in Valencia, 4 in Granada, 2 in Córdoba and 5 in Seville, plus the Basque coast. May suits the central and southern stops best.
• Seville, Córdoba and Granada: a three-city Andalusian loop in May is the classic; see the Andalusia itinerary by train and Seville to Granada by bus or train.
• Madrid: 4 or 5 days is enough, with day trips; see how many days in Madrid and day trips from Madrid.
• North coast: San Sebastián and Bilbao are good for food in any weather; just plan indoor time. Our Basque Country guide covers it.
A two-week route that links these is in Spain in 2 weeks, and the full 60-day route we followed shows how the regions connect.
Book Alhambra tickets as early as you can, since entry is capped, and book Seville and Córdoba rooms early if your dates cross the patios or a weekend. Trains between the Andalusian cities are frequent but cheaper booked ahead. Sun hat, sunscreen, breathable clothes for Seville, a light jacket for Madrid and Granada nights, and a rain jacket for the north. Comfortable shoes for stone streets matter more than anything. Yes for the centre and south. Madrid averages about 23°C (74°F) by day, Seville about 28°C (83°F), and rain is low. The north coast is wetter, with about 126 mm in San Sebastián.
Warm rather than hot. Seville's average high is about 28°C (83°F), with Madrid near 23°C (74°F); heat above 35°C is more typical of July and August.
Very little. AEMET normals give about 34 mm for the month, against 48 mm in Madrid and 126 mm in San Sebastián.
