September is the best month for Italy if you want warm weather and a swimmable sea: Rome and Florence reach about 28°C (82°F) in the afternoon, Venice about 23.8°C (75°F), and the sea off Naples averages about 24.9°C (77°F), close to its yearly peak. The trade-offs are that the big sights are still crowded, September rain arrives as heavy thunderstorms (Naples averages about 89 mm), and the first half of the month can still feel like summer in the cities. We were in Italy from 25 July to 3 August 2023 (Verona, Bologna and Venice), so we have not been in September; weather figures are 1991 to 2020 normals as listed for each city, and event dates come from the organisers named in the text.
• Weather: warm and mostly settled, cooling through the month; storms are the main interruption.
• Sea: the warmest of the year in the south. Naples averages about 24.9°C (77°F).
• Crowds: high in the first half, easing a little toward the end of the month.
• Prices: lower than August, still above spring or November.
• 2027 dates: the Regata Storica in Venice is on Sunday 5 September, and the Architecture Biennale is open until 21 November.
• Skip September if: you cannot handle afternoon heat in Rome early in the month, or you need guaranteed dry days.

1991 to 2020 normals from the stations named in each city's climate table. Individual days run hotter or cooler.
• Venice: highs 23.8°C (75°F), lows 14.8°C (59°F), about 73 mm of rain. Pleasant for walking, with mornings that feel cool.
• Florence: highs 27.3°C (81°F), lows 15°C (59°F), about 67 mm. Warm afternoons, shade needed.
• Rome: highs 27.9°C (82°F), lows 15.9°C (61°F), about 65 mm. Still hot at midday; sightsee early and late.
• Naples and the south: highs 26.8°C (80°F), lows 17.6°C (64°F), about 89 mm, the wettest here, and the sea at 24.9°C (77°F).
Rain in September often comes as a short heavy burst; carry a compact umbrella and keep an indoor option for each day. Check Italian weather alerts if a storm is forecast on the day of a coastal or mountain plan.
• Regata Storica, Venice: Sunday 5 September 2027 according to the official Regata Storica site. A historical water pageant precedes the race, on the Grand Canal. Expect crowded viewing points and plan around it.
• Venice Architecture Biennale: runs 8 May to 21 November 2027 (La Biennale), so it is open all month.
• Venice Film Festival: the festival runs for about ten days around the start of September on the Lido; the 2026 edition is 2 to 12 September. 2027 dates are not published in the sources I found, so check La Biennale before booking Venice rooms for the first half of September.
• Public holidays: none in September, so there are no national closures.
The Venice day-visitor fee has applied on selected days in spring and summer; see the Venice entry tax guide once the 2027 calendar is released.

Our own Italy stay was a northern loop: 2 days in Verona, 4 in Bologna and 3 in Venice. September suits that route and a longer south-to-north line.
• Venice: water is still warm for the Lido, and acqua alta, which the city's flood tides bring between autumn and early spring, is not normally a September concern. See how many days in Venice and day trips from Venice.
• Verona: the Arena and the old centre are comfortable in the evenings; see the Verona one-day guide.
• Bologna: the arcades give shade at midday; see what to eat in Bologna and how many days in Bologna.
For the full loop use the Venice, Verona and Bologna itinerary.
September is still high demand in Rome, Florence, Venice and the Amalfi Coast, particularly the first two weeks and weekends. Book timed tickets for the Colosseum, Uffizi and Vatican museums ahead, and book the Biennale or festival dates around your Venice nights early.

Light clothes for 28°C afternoons, one warmer layer for evenings, a compact umbrella, swimwear, sun protection and comfortable shoes. Churches still expect covered shoulders and knees: see what to wear in Italy and the Italy packing list. The spring alternative is Italy in May, and the full-year view is best time to visit Italy.
Yes. Rome and Florence reach about 27 to 28°C (81 to 82°F), Venice about 24°C (75°F), and the sea near Naples averages about 25°C (77°F). Crowds are lighter than in August but still high.
Yes. The sea off Naples averages about 24.9°C (76.8°F) in September, one of the warmest months of the year.
Some. Normals give about 89 mm in Naples, 73 mm in Venice, 67 mm in Florence and 65 mm in Rome, often as short thunderstorms.
The Regata Storica on Sunday 5 September, the Architecture Biennale (open until 21 November), and the film festival around the start of the month, with 2027 festival dates yet to be confirmed.
Not normally. Acqua alta, flood tides in Venice, mostly affects the city between autumn and early spring.
