How much does a trip to Germany cost?

By · Published

A 12-day trip to Germany costs roughly $1,300 to $1,950 per person on a budget and $2,350 to $3,350 mid-range, including a return flight from the US. On the ground that is about $50 to $85 a day on a budget and $135 to $200 mid-range, the bands in our daily travel budget by country. Food and sights are reasonable; long-distance rail and Munich hotels are where the budget moves. We spent 16 days in Germany in July 2023, from Berlin through Bremen, Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Wurzburg and Ulm to Munich. The figures below are typical 2026 prices from official pages and cost guides, not what we spent.

Germany trip cost at a glance (12 days, per person)

The totals assume 12 days: Berlin, a few middle stops and Munich. Rate used: about €0.89 to the US dollar, or $1.12 per euro, from our October 2026 snapshot.

• Budget: about $600 to $1,020 on the ground, plus the flight. Dorm beds, supermarket and bakery food, döner and sausage meals, regional rather than ICE trains.

• Mid-range: about $1,620 to $2,400 on the ground, plus the flight. Hotel rooms shared between two, restaurant dinners, a few paid castles and museums.

• Comfort: above $200 a day, which is easy to reach in Munich in September or during trade fairs.

Dates matter more here than in most countries. Munich rooms climb sharply when a big event is on. See Oktoberfest 2027 for how much Munich changes in two weeks.

Flights

Our October 2026 fare snapshot, built from real fares travellers found and so leaning low, shows US returns to Germany at about $720 to $940, averaging near $800, and Canada about $660 to $1,150. From the UK a flight can cost around $100 to $170, from Spain or Italy about $95 to $220. Frankfurt is the main gateway, Munich and Berlin the others.

Summer and the weeks around Christmas markets and Oktoberfest are dearest. Timing guidance is in how far in advance to book international flights. Germany is in Schengen; ETIAS has not launched, see ETIAS and EES.

Accommodation and city taxes

2026 travel-cost guides put Berlin dorm beds at about €25 to €45 (≈ $28–50) a night and Munich at €25 to €38 (≈ $28–42), with Munich the dearest city in Germany. Private hotel rooms are the main mid-range cost. Berlin and other cities add an overnight tax; see Berlin's city tax. Our route spent 3 nights in Berlin and Frankfurt, 5 in Munich and 2 in Bremen and Wurzburg, so two or three days per city worked as a pace.

For where to base, read where to stay in Munich. Sleeping in a smaller city like Wurzburg or Ulm and riding in on a regional train is usually cheaper than a central Munich hotel, and the Deutschlandticket covers that ride. Our route also used Heidelberg as a short stop between Frankfurt and Wurzburg, which suits a day or an afternoon rather than a night.

Getting around: the Deutschlandticket and ICE

Germany's rail has two price levels. The Deutschlandticket costs €63 (≈ $70) a month in 2026 and rises to €66.80 (≈ $75) from 1 January 2027; it covers regional trains, S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses across the country but not ICE, IC or EC trains. Tourists can buy it in the DB Navigator app, and it is a subscription that must be cancelled by the 10th. See the Deutschlandticket guide.

Long-distance ICE fares range from low saver prices weeks ahead to several times that on the day. A travel-cost guide quotes Munich to Berlin at about €36 to €70 (≈ $40–78) standard, with saver fares cheaper; we could not verify current Deutsche Bahn fares, so check the DB site for your date. The Bayern-Ticket (€34 (≈ $38) for one person) is the day-pass for regional rides from Munich. Airport links: Berlin and Munich.

Food, sights and cash

Food is moderate: guides put a döner at about €5 to €8 (≈ $5.6–8.9) in Berlin and a currywurst at about €4 to €6 (≈ $4.5–6.7). Supermarket bakery breakfasts keep a day low; read what to buy at a grocery store in Germany. Tipping is a rounding-up habit: tipping in Germany. Cards are not universal, so see cash or card in Germany.

Neuschwanstein Castle, a day trip from Munich, costs €21 (≈ $23) for an adult in 2026, with children under 18 free; ordering online adds a €2.50 (≈ $2.8) booking fee, per the castle's own site. Day trips from Munich covers other options.
