From Munich Airport (MUC), the S-Bahn is the best option for most visitors: the S1 and S8 leave from beneath the terminals and reach Marienplatz and the Hauptbahnhof in about 40 minutes, about every 10 minutes combined, for roughly €14 to €15 (≈ $15.6–16.7) on a single ticket. The Lufthansa Express Bus runs to the Hauptbahnhof for about €13 (≈ $14.5), and a taxi is €65 to €85 (≈ $73–95). The airport is far out, about 30 km northeast of the centre, so a taxi is a bad deal for one person. We spent 5 days in Munich in July 2023. The timetable facts come from the Munich Airport public transport page and the prices from 2026 guides, since the MVV tariff page was not available to read; fares have changed more than once in recent years, so check before you pay.
MUC has two terminals and the S-Bahn station sits in the Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 area, with a second stop at Besucherpark. Follow the S-Bahn signs; you walk down to the platforms in a few minutes.
Munich is in the MVV fare system, which uses rings and zones. The airport is in the outermost zone, so a single ticket to the centre is a long-distance fare by city standards, roughly €14 to €15 (≈ $15.6–16.7) in 2026 guides. Prices at machines are the reference.

Both lines run to the city and alternate, giving a train about every 10 minutes. The S8 goes via Ostbahnhof and is non-stop, which makes it the faster of the two: roughly 38 to 40 minutes to Marienplatz, then Karlsplatz (Stachus) and the Hauptbahnhof. The S1 goes via Moosach and takes about 45 minutes to the Hauptbahnhof. S8 is operated 24/7 with a 40-minute interval from about 01:00 to 04:00; S1 runs every 20 minutes from about 03:00 to midnight.
A single ticket for the whole route is about €15 (≈ $16.7) (zones M to 5). The Airport-City-Day-Ticket costs about €16.30 (≈ $18.2) for one adult and covers the airport transfer plus unlimited city travel until 06:00 the next day, so it's cheaper than two singles. A group version at about €30.50 (≈ $34) covers up to five adults. If you will take only one or two other S-Bahn or U-Bahn trips, the day ticket pays off; otherwise buy a single.
Buy at the yellow MVV machines before boarding and validate the ticket at the stamp machines on the platform. Inspectors check often, and fines for riding without a valid ticket are €60 (≈ $67).
The Lufthansa Express Bus runs between the airport and the Hauptbahnhof, about every 20 minutes, with one stop at München-Nord (Schwabing). Journey time is about 45 minutes to the Hauptbahnhof and 25 minutes from Schwabing. Adult one-way tickets were quoted at €13 (≈ $14.5) (€20 (≈ $22) return) in 2026 guides, and the bus takes all travellers, not only Lufthansa passengers.
This is only worth it if you want a seat and a straight run to the Hauptbahnhof, since the S-Bahn is as fast and cheaper with a day ticket. One guide says the last bus leaves around 20:00, but confirm the last departure at airportbus-muenchen.de.

A taxi to the centre is metered at roughly €65 to €85 (≈ $73–95), nearing €90 (≈ $100) in heavy traffic, and takes 45 to 60 minutes, with a night surcharge reported after 23:00. Ride-hailing apps (Uber, Bolt, FreeNow) charge similar amounts. A group of three or four with heavy luggage can justify it; for one or two people, the S-Bahn is a fraction of the price.
For Oktoberfest or other peak events, taxi queues are long and traffic is slow; the train is often faster. See our Oktoberfest 2027 guide for dates.
The S8 runs through the night on a 40-minute interval, so an overnight arrival still has a train. Check the MVV journey planner for construction work and disruptions, which regularly shift the timetable on weekends.
If your hotel is near the Hauptbahnhof, the S-Bahn drops you in the heart of the station district; if it is further out, plan an onward U-Bahn or tram. See where to stay in Munich for the neighbourhoods.

Check which S-Bahn line is next: the S8 is non-stop and faster, the S1 goes through Moosach and has more stops. Check the departure board for the next train and choose the quicker one if both are close. Munich also has large Christmas markets in late November and December; see German Christmas markets 2026.
Mind the Oktoberfest period: trains to the Theresienwiese area are very full in late September and early October. Hotels near the Hauptbahnhof are the easiest base for the airport and for onward trains like Munich to Venice.
One or two travellers: S8 to Marienplatz or Hauptbahnhof, with the Airport-City-Day-Ticket if you'll ride around that day. Want a direct seat to the Hauptbahnhof: Express Bus. Three or four people with bags: taxi. Parked at the airport: your parking ticket in some car parks gives free S-Bahn travel.
