Where to Stay for the 2027 Europa League Final in Frankfurt: Areas Ranked by S-Bahn Time to the StadiumDestinations & Itineraries

Where should I stay for the 2027 Europa League final in Frankfurt?

By · Published · Last updated

The 2027 UEFA Europa League final is on Wednesday 26 May 2027 at Stadion Frankfurt, Eintracht Frankfurt's ground in the city forest south-west of the centre, according to UEFA. The stadium has no car park; everyone arrives by S-Bahn or tram, so the right base is anywhere on the S7, S8 or S9 lines: the Hauptbahnhof area and the Innenstadt for convenience, Niederrad for the shortest ride, and the airport for a midweek fly-in, fly-out. Book the nights of 25 and 26 May. We spent 3 days in Frankfurt from 14 to 17 July 2023 with a day trip to Heidelberg, not for a match, so the match-day arrangements below come from UEFA, the transport operators and Euro 2024 fan guidance.

The final: date, kick-off and venue

UEFA's 2026/27 Europa League calendar puts the final on Wednesday 26 May 2027 at Stadion Frankfurt, with the semi-finals on 29 April and 6 May 2027. UEFA notes dates are subject to change. The ground is known locally by its sponsor name, Deutsche Bank Park; UEFA uses the neutral name for its finals. It hosted five matches at Euro 2024 and games at the 2006 World Cup.

It is the third Europa League (or UEFA Cup) final in a German city after Hamburg in 2010 and Cologne in 2020. Kick-off time: UEFA's season pages did not list one when we checked. Plan for an evening game on a working Wednesday, which matters for trains and for checking out the next morning.

A midweek final has one big advantage for travellers: Frankfurt is a business city, and its hotels price around trade fairs and the working week. Check the Messe Frankfurt calendar for 25 to 27 May before you assume a fair-free week; we could not confirm one way or the other.

Getting to the stadium

S-Bahn S7, S8 and S9 run from Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof to Frankfurt (Main) Stadion station. A Euro 2024 fan guide gives the ride as about 6 minutes. From Stadion station it is about a 10-minute walk to the ground, through the forest.

• S8 and S9 use the city-centre tunnel, so they also call at Hauptwache and Konstablerwache, and their Hauptbahnhof platforms are underground (they do not show on the main departure boards). UEFA's Euro 2024 travel page gave about 15 minutes from Hauptwache to Stadion. Together they run about every 15 minutes, with extra trains on match days.

• S7 leaves from the main hall at the Hauptbahnhof and runs about every 30 minutes; it calls at Niederrad before Stadion.

• Trams 20 and 21 run to the Stadion tram stop on match days. They are slower than the S-Bahn and, according to past club notices, are the first thing affected by bridge closures or strikes.

• From the airport: S8 and S9 leave from the airport's Regionalbahnhof (not the long-distance station, which is about 5 minutes' walk away), and Stadion is the next stop on the line towards the city.

At Euro 2024, match tickets included a 36-hour RMV transport pass covering the whole region. UEFA had not said whether the same applies to the 2027 final when we checked; read your ticket's conditions, and if it does not, buy an RMV day ticket.

Where to stay, ranked by travel time to the stadium

1. Niederrad and the airport. The two places closest to the stadium by train. Niederrad, south of the river, is an office district with business hotels by the S7 station of the same name; the airport hotels are one S-Bahn stop from Stadion. Both are built for weekday business travellers, which suits a Wednesday final. Price level: mid-range, often cheaper than the centre on non-fair days. The catch: almost nothing to do in the evening, so you will go into town to eat anyway.

2. Bahnhofsviertel (around the Hauptbahnhof). Every S-Bahn line to the stadium leaves from here, plus the trams, plus every train in and out of Frankfurt. It is the most practical base and has the most hotel rooms, from budget chains to boutique places, and some of the city's most interesting cheap food. Price level: budget to mid-range. The catch: the streets just east of the station are the red-light and drug-scene area, and some visitors find them uncomfortable at night. Pick a hotel on the Westend side or a block or two north if that bothers you.

3. Innenstadt and the Altstadt (Hauptwache, Römer). The old centre and shopping streets, around 15 minutes from Stadion on the S8 or S9 from Hauptwache. This is where visiting fans will gather before the match, and where the Römerberg and the rebuilt old town are. Price level: mid to high. The catch: it is where fan crowds concentrate, so expect noise the night before.

4. Sachsenhausen. Across the Main from the centre, known for apple-wine taverns and the Museumsufer. Pleasant and less corporate than the centre. Price level: mid-range. The catch: fewer direct S-Bahn options to the stadium, so you will usually go via the Hauptbahnhof or by tram; allow extra time.

5. Westend. Leafy, residential and close to the Messe and the Hauptbahnhof; quieter nights than the Bahnhofsviertel with a short walk to the S-Bahn. Price level: mid to high.

Further out: Mainz or Wiesbaden. The S8 runs from Wiesbaden via Mainz and the airport to Stadion without a change. If Frankfurt is full or expensive, both are real cities with their own old towns. The catch: a longer ride, and the last trains matter after a late final. For Germany planning beyond the match, see best time to visit Germany.

When to book

We have no sourced data on hotel prices for the 2027 final, so this is general advice. Finalists are known only after the semi-finals on 6 May 2027, which leaves under three weeks; the two sets of fans book in a rush once their club is through. Book a free-cancellation room early and decide after the semi-finals.

Because the final is on a Wednesday, staying Tuesday and Wednesday nights and flying out Thursday morning is the usual pattern. If centre prices jump, the airport hotels and Mainz are the pressure valves. If you are combining the trip with a few days elsewhere, Heidelberg is a short train ride south; see our Heidelberg guide. For entry rules, see do I need a visa to visit Germany.

Match-day logistics

• No car park at the ground. The stadium is in the forest and has no spectator parking, so do not plan to drive.

• Return trains. Expect queues at Stadion station after the whistle. The 10-minute walk back to the S-Bahn, or the tram stop, can take much longer; the airport and Mainz direction is usually less crowded than the city direction.

• Strikes. German public transport strikes are announced in advance; one hit a Frankfurt European night in the past and trams stopped while the S-Bahn ran. Check RMV and the club's notices the day before.

• Card or cash. Germany still has cash-only bars and kiosks. Carry some euros, and see tipping in Germany for what to round up. An eSIM saves roaming costs for live train updates: Germany eSIM.

• Manners. Quiet hours on residential streets and in apartments are taken seriously; what is considered rude in Germany covers the rest.

How do I get to the Frankfurt stadium?

Take S-Bahn S7, S8 or S9 from the Hauptbahnhof to Stadion station, about 6 minutes, then walk about 10 minutes. Trams 20 and 21 also run on match days. There is no spectator car park.

Around the Hauptbahnhof for convenience, the Innenstadt for atmosphere, or Niederrad and the airport for the shortest ride. Mainz and Wiesbaden are direct on the S8 if Frankfurt fills up.
