When is the Frankfurt Christmas market in 2026, and what happens on the Römerberg?

By · Published

The Frankfurt Christmas Market runs from Monday 23 November to Tuesday 22 December 2026, Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 21:00 and Sunday 11:00 to 21:00. Those dates and hours come from visitfrankfurt, the site of the city's tourism company that runs the market. More than 230 stalls spread from the Römerberg across Paulsplatz, the Mainkai, Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz, Hauptwache and Roßmarkt. It closes three days before Christmas, so it won't work for a Christmas week trip. We spent 3 days in Frankfurt in July 2023, so this guide relies on the organiser's published information, not on a visit to the market.

Opening night, Monday 23 November

The opening happens on the stage on the Römerberg. The organiser's 2026 schedule is:

• 16:30 to 17:00: singers from Oper Frankfurt on the stage.

• 17:05: the carillon from St Nicholas Church.

• 17:10: opening address by Lord Mayor Mike Josef, with the opera's Christmas concert.

• 18:00: tower horns from the gallery of St Nicholas Church.

• 18:00 to 19:30: a separate stage programme at Roßmarkt.

Wheelchair users have a limited number of spaces in the cordoned-off area in front of the stage, reached through Limpurger Gasse on the left of the stage.

The dates worth planning around

The programme is still being added to, so check closer to your visit. These dates were published when we checked:

• Tower horns: on opening night, then every Wednesday and Saturday evening from the gallery of St Nicholas Church, at the south end of the Römerberg. The opening performance is at 18:00.

• Grand Bell Ringing: Saturday 28 November, 16:30 to 17:00, when ten of the city's churches ring together. There is a second ringing on 24 December, 17:00 to 17:30, after the market has closed.

• St Nicholas: Sunday 6 December at 17:10 on the Römerberg stage.

• Historic railway: 12 and 13 December, Christmas rides on the harbour railway from the Eiserner Steg footbridge.

The 2026 tree, which the city has named Nikolaus, is a spruce of about 50 years from Wald-Königsleiten in Austria's Pinzgau region, about 27 m tall. It is due on the Römerberg on 3 November.

How the market is laid out

Unlike Munich's market around one main square, Frankfurt's runs through a chain of squares in the city centre. From north to south:

• Roßmarkt (WeihnachtsRoßmarkt): part of the market since 2021, under the high-rises. It has a large Christmas pyramid you can drink in and a Ferris wheel.

• Hauptwache: stalls beside the Zeil shopping street.

• Paulsplatz: next to St Paul's Church, between Hauptwache and the Römerberg.

• Römerberg: the historic square, with the tree, the stage and the visitfrankfurt stall.

• Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz (Pink Christmas): a square decorated in pink, with hot cocktails and homemade soups, popular with the LGBTQ+ community.

• Mainkai: the riverside section. The children's market is east of the Eiserner Steg, with a carousel and small Ferris wheel, a craft workshop and a programme of theatre, music and stories on an illuminated boat.

New for 2026: 100 small Christmas trees decorated by Frankfurt children are placed around the market.

The organiser names a few other markets in the districts, including the City Christmas Market on a rooftop terrace, the Sachsenhausen market in the forest near the Goethe Tower, and Swedish and Finnish markets in Preungesheim and Dornbusch on the first Advent weekend. It gives no 2026 dates for these on the main market page, so check before you travel.

What to buy, eat and drink

These are the local specialities the organiser highlights:

• Bethmännchen: small marzipan balls with three almond halves, linked to the Bethmann banking family. They are the Frankfurt Advent sweet.

• Brenten: a marzipan biscuit.

• Hot apple wine: Frankfurt's own winter drink, sold alongside Glühwein.

• Quetschemännchen: little figures made of dried plums and nuts on wire, meant to bring good luck. The organiser says shy admirers once gave them as a gift; if it was handed back, the answer was no.

• The market mug: redesigned every year, and collected by locals. The official page does not state the deposit amount, so read the stall's board. Our German markets guide explains how deposits work.

One detail for postcard senders: the tourism company's stall under the tree on the Römerberg takes stamped letters and cards and passes them to Deutsche Post for a special Christmas market postmark. Traditional stamps only; codes from the mobile stamp app don't qualify.

The organiser's history calls the medieval market the Christkindchesmarkt and singles out 1498, when the wedding of Landgrave Wilhelm of Hesse took place at Christmas.

Getting there, closures and security

The organiser says there is no event parking and asks visitors to use public transport.

• For the Römerberg: U4 or U5 to Dom/Römer, or tram 11, 12 or 14 to Römer/Paulskirche.

• For Hauptwache and Roßmarkt: S1 to S6, S8 or S9, or U1 to U3, U6, U7 or U8, to Hauptwache. It is about 5 minutes on foot to the Römerberg.

• From the airport: S8 and S9 stop at Hauptwache. They leave from the airport's Regionalbahnhof.

• Road closures: during opening hours, streets including Bethmannstraße, Braubachstraße, Limpurger Gasse, Alte Mainzer Gasse, Roßmarkt, Bleidenstraße and Holzgraben are closed to vehicles, and the Mainkai is closed between the Alte Brücke and Untermainbrücke. Closures may lift from about 21:30 to 22:00.

• Banned items: weapons, knives of any kind including pocket knives, sharp tools, pepper spray and pyrotechnics.

• Access: the organiser describes the whole event area as barrier-free, with accessible toilets at St Paul's Church, Alte Mainzer Gasse, Roßmarkt and Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz.

If your dates miss the market

The market ends on Tuesday 22 December. 25 and 26 December are public holidays. Shops close by about 14:00 on 24 December, and 27 December is a Sunday, so there are few shopping days between Christmas and New Year.

Munich runs to 24 December and Berlin's bigger markets to New Year or later: see our Berlin Christmas markets guide and Munich Christmas markets guide. Our German Christmas markets guide has the train times between cities.

Where to stay near the Römerberg

• Innenstadt and Altstadt: the closest, within walking distance of every section, and the easiest for late evenings. Road closures make arriving by car or taxi harder.

• Bahnhofsviertel: around the Hauptbahnhof, with the most hotel rooms and direct S-Bahn to Hauptwache. It is practical, though not the most attractive part of town.

• Sachsenhausen: across the Main, reached on foot over the Eiserner Steg, with apple-wine taverns and a calmer feel.

We don't have a general Frankfurt stay guide yet. Our Europa League final stay guide compares these same central areas.
