Where to Stay in Venice: Cannaregio, San Marco, Dorsoduro or Mestre?Where to stay

Where should you stay in Venice?

By · Published

Stay in the historic centre, not on the mainland, and for a first visit pick Cannaregio. It is a flat walk from the Santa Lucia railway station with few bridges, it has the city's best canal-side bacari, and San Marco is roughly 20 to 40 minutes away on foot, depending on which end you stay. We spent 3 days in Venice from late July into August 2023, after Bologna and before Zagreb, and the hours that make Venice worth it are early morning and evening, when the day visitors are gone. You only get those by sleeping on the islands. Mestre is cheaper, but you trade away exactly that.

Quick pick by traveler type

• First visit: Cannaregio, between the station and the Rialto.

• Landmarks on the doorstep: San Marco, at a premium.

• Quiet and romantic: Dorsoduro, or the eastern end of Castello.

• Budget: Mestre on the mainland, or the northern edge of Cannaregio and Santa Croce.

• Families and heavy luggage: Santa Croce near Piazzale Roma, the last point reachable by car, bus or taxi, or Cannaregio near the station.

• Nightlife: Cannaregio's Fondamenta della Misericordia and Ormesini, and Campo Santa Margherita in Dorsoduro.

Cannaregio: the best first-time base

Cannaregio is the northern sestiere, running from the station to the Rialto. Its main street, the Strada Nova, is a mostly flat route toward the centre, and the long, straight fondamenta along its northern canals are where Venetians still live, drink and moor their boats. It also holds the historic Jewish Ghetto.

It suits first-timers, people arriving by train and anyone who wants evenings in local bacari. Our Venice guide recommends it for flat walking from Santa Lucia without dragging bags over a string of bridges.

The downside: the strip between the station and the Rialto along the Strada Nova is one of the most crowded routes in the city by day. Pick a room off the main drag, toward the northern canals.

San Marco: the landmarks, at a price

San Marco is the central sestiere around the square itself, the Basilica, the Doge's Palace and the Rialto end of the Grand Canal. Staying here means walking into an empty Piazza San Marco at first light, which is the best moment Venice has.

It suits short stays and travelers who want the classic sights within five minutes of the door.

The downside: it is the most expensive district, the most crowded by day and the least residential, with restaurants largely aimed at visitors. From the station it is a long vaporetto ride or a walk over many bridges.

Dorsoduro: art, quiet canals and the Zattere

Dorsoduro, south of the Grand Canal, holds the Accademia, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and Santa Maria della Salute, and its southern edge, the Zattere, is a long sunny promenade facing the Giudecca canal. Campo Santa Margherita, its student square, is busy in the evenings.

It suits couples, art lovers and return visitors. It is quieter than San Marco while being a single bridge, the Accademia, from it.

The downside: from the station, the walk involves bridges and some navigation, so many people arrive by vaporetto, which adds cost.

Castello: residential Venice in the east

Castello is the largest sestiere, stretching east from behind San Marco to the Biennale gardens. Its western end is a short walk from the Basilica; further east, around Via Garibaldi, it is the most everyday part of the city, with washing over the lanes and neighborhood bars.

It suits travelers who want local life and value, especially for longer stays.

The downside: it is the furthest district from the station, so arriving means a long vaporetto ride, and the eastern end is a 20-minute walk from the main sights.

Santa Croce, San Polo and Mestre

Santa Croce and San Polo sit on the station side of the Grand Canal. Santa Croce includes Piazzale Roma, the bus and taxi terminal where road traffic ends, which makes it the easiest arrival with heavy bags. San Polo holds the Rialto Market. Both are central and slightly cheaper than San Marco.

Mestre is the mainland town across the lagoon. Trains to Santa Lucia take about 10 to 12 minutes for around €1.50 (≈ $1.7), and rooms cost noticeably less. It suits tight budgets and travelers using the rail network for day trips from Venice.

The downside of Mestre is the reason not to choose it for a first visit: you arrive when the crowds arrive and leave before the evening light, and you miss the empty city at dawn.

Booking advice: bridges, water, fees and nights

Luggage and bridges: every bridge has steps. Before booking, trace the route from the station, Piazzale Roma or your vaporetto stop to the door and count the bridges. A room near your arrival point is worth more than a better room across ten bridges.

Vaporetto costs: a single water-bus ticket is about €9.50 (≈ $10.6) and a 24-hour pass about €25 (≈ $28), so a base you can walk from saves real money.

Taxes and the access fee: the city tourist tax is added to your accommodation bill. Overnight guests are exempt from the day-tripper access fee, but on fee days you may need to register for an exemption QR code; see our Venice entry fee guide.

Ground floors: in acqua alta season, roughly autumn through winter, ask whether a ground-floor room has been affected by flooding.

Season: summer is hot and crowded; we were there at the end of July. April to May and September to October are better. Carnival pushes prices up in February.

How many nights: two or three nights on the islands covers the main sights and the lagoon; see how many days in Venice. Venice was the last stop of our northern Italy route after Verona and Bologna, outlined in our Italy itinerary. For eating out, read what to eat in Venice and the coperto cover charge guide.
