How do you get tickets for the Oberammergau Passion Play in 2030?

By · Published · Last updated

The 43rd Oberammergau Passion Play is planned for about 100 performances between 18 May and 6 October 2030, with none on Mondays or Wednesdays. Sales haven't started: the regional tourism office expects hotel packages from spring 2028 and single tickets from autumn 2028. Planned prices run from €40 to €270 (≈ $45–301), plus a 12% advance booking fee. It runs once a decade, and the theatre holds up to 4,500 people. Tour operators sell their own packages, and their timelines differ from the official one, which is what this page sorts out. The photo shows Munich, the usual gateway.

When sales open

• Official guidance: spring 2028 for hotel packages, and autumn 2028 for individual tickets.

• Tour operators: some say operators get allocations earlier, in 2026 or 2027, and one says performance-only tickets come as late as late 2029. Those are operator claims, not the official timeline.

If an operator will sell you a package now, check whether it includes a confirmed ticket, what happens if performance dates change, and who holds your money.

Packages and discounts

The tourism site lists two package types, from which you can compare any operator's offer:

• 1 night, from €419 (≈ $468) per person: double room with breakfast, a performance ticket, museum admission, a 3-course meal during the break with drinks, a textbook, local buses and tourist tax.

• 2 nights, from €624 (≈ $696) per person: the same extras, two nights, a dinner on arrival day, and the performance on the day after you arrive.

Students, pupils, young adults up to 27, and people with a disability rating of 70% or more get 50% off tickets with proof.

What the day is like

The play lasts about five hours, split by a long break. Planned times are about 14:00 to 16:30 for Part 1 and about 20:00 to 22:30 for Part 2, so it ends late. That's why most people stay overnight.

The tradition dates to the 17th century, when villagers vowed to stage the play if they were spared the plague. The 2020 season was disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, so check any older page's dates.

Getting there

From Munich, the usual route is a train to Murnau, then the regional line to Oberammergau, about 2 hours in total. The Murnau connection runs mostly hourly and takes about 40 minutes. Driving takes about 1.5 hours via the A95.

The official Passion Play site has also warned of construction closures on the Murnau line, with replacement services, so check before you travel. Our Munich airport guide covers your arrival, and where to stay in Munich helps if you add city nights before or after.
