Christmas Day is a normal working day in Thailand: the Singapore Embassy's May 2026 list of Thai public holidays does not include 25 December, so temples, markets, shops and transport all run as usual. Christmas here is something you see in the big malls and hotels, and it falls in the most expensive fortnight of the peak season. The first public holiday after it is New Year's Eve on 31 December. The Thai Meteorological Department also expects a late, warmer cool season this year because of El Niño, and the UK Foreign Office still carries a flooding warning for Bangkok from this autumn. We were in Bangkok from 7 to 13 December 2022 and in Chiang Mai from 22 to 28 December 2022, then in Ao Nang from 13 to 17 January 2023. The details below come from official and news sources.
No. The December public holidays in the Singapore Embassy's list are Monday 7 December (the substitute for 5 December, King Bhumibol's birthday), Thursday 10 December (Constitution Day) and Thursday 31 December. The Nation's report on Bank of Thailand dates also lists 31 December and 1 January as bank holidays.
That makes Thursday 24 and Friday 25 December 2026 ordinary days. Banks, offices and government services work normally. The Christian population is small, so Christmas is mostly commercial and Christmas Eve does not stop anything.
The long weekend to plan around is New Year: 31 December to 3 January. Domestic flights and buses fill first for those dates, as our December and January guide explains. That guide has the regional detail on weather and routes, so this page sticks to Christmas itself.

Bangkok's Christmas lives in its malls. No 2026 programme was published when we checked; malls and the Tourism Authority of Thailand usually announce in November. These recent seasons show the pattern:
• CentralWorld: Time Out listed a 40-metre tree for the 2024 season, running to 5 January 2025, and called it the tallest in Southeast Asia, inside a seasonal village. Central Pattana's December 2024 announcement described regional trees at its other malls too.
• ICONSIAM: on the river, with a 20-metre tree until 25 December in 2024, and a riverside light show under the Bangkok Illumination name in 2025.
• One Bangkok: its Christmas programme ran from 14 November 2025 to 4 January 2026, with a choir on 25 December at One Bangkok Park.
• Others: Time Out also listed Central Embassy, Siam Center, Samyan Mitrtown and MBK for 2024, all free to visit.
Most of this is free to walk around. Hotels run Christmas dinners and buffets; we have no sourced 2026 prices, so check with each hotel.
For a religious Christmas, Assumption Cathedral in Bang Rak is the Catholic cathedral. Mass is mostly in Thai, and undated travel guides list a Sunday 10:00 Mass in English. We could not find the 2025 Christmas schedule, so call the parish in December. Holy Redeemer Church on Soi Ruam Rudee is often named for English services, though that also needs confirming. Dress as you would for a temple; see temple dress code in Thailand.
Chiang Mai has less Christmas than Bangkok and more reason to be there, since it has the most reliable weather of the season. Malls decorate, hotels run dinners, and the temples and the Sunday Walking Street run as they always do. We could not confirm any 2026 Christmas event, so check Chiang Mai's local listings in December.
Sacred Heart Cathedral on Charoen Prathet Road is the seat of the Catholic Diocese of Chiang Mai. Services are mostly in Thai, and the only Christmas times we found were old forum posts, so ask the cathedral directly.
We were in Chiang Mai from 22 to 28 December 2022, then Chiang Rai from 28 December to 4 January 2023. Our Chiang Mai guide, how many days in Chiang Mai and how many days in Chiang Rai cover both.

For a beach at Christmas, the answer is the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Ao Nang, Koh Lanta), not the Gulf (Samui, Phangan, Tao), where December is still wet. Our December and January guide has the rainfall figures.
The Thai Meteorological Department's reports this October add a warning. It forecast very heavy rain for Phang Nga, Phuket and Krabi on 24 and 25 October, with waves above 3 metres in thunderstorm areas of the Andaman Sea and the Gulf. It also expects southern provinces to stay wet, especially the Gulf coast, and warned of flash floods. None of that says what late December will bring. It does mean you should watch the forecast before booking boats.
Beach rooms are the first thing to sell out. Book them before anything else, and consider the Bangkok to Krabi and Ao Nang route guide and Ao Nang to Railay longtail guide for the transfers.
The long-term averages in our other guides still describe a normal year, but 2026 may not be one. Thai press reports on 15 October carried the Thai Meteorological Department's forecast:
• Start: the cool season arrives about a week later than usual, with cooler conditions more widespread from mid-November to early February. Reports differ slightly on the exact start.
• Temperatures: an average minimum across upper Thailand of 22 to 23°C, about 2°C above the normal 19.9°C, and Bangkok lows of about 19 to 21°C.
• Cause: El Niño, expected to strengthen towards the end of 2026.
So pack a light layer for northern mornings, but do not count on the coldest nights our guides describe.
Flooding is the other live issue. The UK Foreign Office page, updated on 12 October 2026 and current on 31 October, reports severe flooding in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan this autumn, and special holidays declared there on 28 and 29 September. It also advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of the Cambodian border, where land crossings remain suspended. Check that page before you fly. The main visitor areas in this guide are nowhere near that border.

We have no sourced 2026 prices, so we will not give you one. Our December and January guide puts the peak at roughly 20 December to early January. For a sensible budget range outside that window, see how much a trip to Thailand costs, and expect to pay more than that during Christmas week.
• Book first: beach rooms and the Bangkok to Chiang Mai sleeper, which has limited berths.
• Travel date: avoid domestic flights on 30 and 31 December, the start of the New Year long weekend.
• Entry: since 15 September 2026, most visa-exempt tourists get 30 days, not 60. See do I need a visa for Thailand and the TDAC arrival card.
• Getting around Bangkok: the Grab vs Bolt guide covers taxis, and the Skytrain avoids the traffic around the Siam malls.
• Bangkok, for the malls: Siam, or Sukhumvit between Nana and Phrom Phong, on the Skytrain.
• Bangkok, for temples and ICONSIAM: the Charoen Krung riverside near Saphan Taksin.
• Bangkok, for Assumption Cathedral: Silom or the Charoen Krung side of Bang Rak.
• Chiang Mai: inside the Old City moat for temples, Nimman for cafés. The Old City's Sunday Walking Street gets very crowded.
• Andaman coast: Ao Nang for boats to Railay and the islands.

No. The Singapore Embassy's 2026 list of Thai holidays does not include 25 December, so banks, shops, temples and transport run as normal.
Chiang Mai for dry, cooler weather, Bangkok for malls and lights, and the Andaman coast for a beach. The Gulf islands are still wet in December.
Yes. Roughly 20 December to early January is the peak of the year. We have no sourced 2026 prices, so book beach rooms early and compare.
It is forecast warmer than normal. The Thai Meteorological Department expects a late cool season, with average minimums about 2°C above normal in upper Thailand.
