Surrounded by misty, jungle-covered mountain ranges in northern Thailand, Chiang Mai was founded in 1296 as the capital of the ancient Lanna Kingdom (the Land of a Million Rice Fields). Enclosed within a perfect square moat and crumbling red-brick ramparts, the historic Old City contains over 30 active Buddhist temples (wats) adorned with tiered teakwood gables, Naga serpent balustrades, and soaring golden chedis that catch the early morning sunlight. With its laid-back pace, thriving artisan craft tradition, night walking streets, and rich, coconut-curried khao soi noodles, Chiang Mai remains northern Thailand's most beloved cultural sanctuary.

The historic walled capital of the ancient Lanna Kingdom, where golden chedis and teakwood monasteries rise against northern mountain foothills.
Inside the square moated Old City, Wat Phra Singh stands as Chiang Mai's most revered monastic complex. Its 14th-century Lai Kam chapel houses the sacred Phra Singh Buddha image, framed by delicate gold-leaf stencils on red lacquer walls and intricate northern Thai woodcarvings.
A short walk east brings you to Wat Chedi Luang, where a monumental 15th-century ruined stone pagoda—once standing over 80 meters tall before a 16th-century earthquake—still towers over surrounding frangipani trees, guarded by massive stone elephants carved into its base.

As dusk falls, Chiang Mai transforms into a street dining wonderland. The famous Sunday Walking Street fills Ratchadamnoen Road with hundreds of local artisans selling silver jewelry, hand-painted parasols, and carved soap flowers, while food stalls serve sizzling northern sausages (sai oua) spiced with kaffir lime and lemongrass.
November to February (the cool and dry season), when night temperatures drop pleasantly, skies are crystal clear, and the Yi Peng lantern festival illuminates the night sky (typically in November).
Stay inside the Old City within the moat boundaries for quiet, walkable access to morning temples and cafes, or in Nimmanhaemin for contemporary boutique hotels, coffee roasteries, and art galleries.
Khao Soi (crispy egg noodles atop a rich, fragrant coconut curry broth with tender braised chicken or beef, served with lime wedges, pickled mustard greens, and shallots) and sai oua herbal pork sausage.
Rent a city bicycle or hire a red songthaew (shared red pickup truck) to hop between Old City temples. When entering temple chapels, remember to remove shoes and dress respectfully with shoulders and knees covered.
