Seasonal travelBy Clever Tourists · Published
The best time to visit Romania is late May to June or September: warm days of about 20 to 27°C (68 to 81°F), green hills in Transylvania, festival season in the Saxon towns, and none of the heat that can push Bucharest above 30°C (86°F) in July and August. If you want to drive the Transfăgărășan, the window is narrower: the high road usually opens only from late June or July to the end of October, depending on snow. We spent three weeks in Romania from 17 October to 8 November 2022, crossing from Hungary to Oradea, then Cluj-Napoca, Deva, Sibiu, Sighișoara, Brașov, Sinaia and Bucharest, so October is the season we know on the ground.
• Best weather: June to September. Mountain towns like Sinaia and Brașov stay cooler than Bucharest.
• Fewest crowds with good weather: late May, June and September.
• Cheapest: November and January to March, outside ski weekends in the Prahova Valley.
• Festivals: Orthodox Easter (2 May 2027), Sighișoara's medieval festival (July), Untold in Cluj-Napoca (August), Christmas markets in Sibiu, Brașov and Bucharest (late November to December).
• Avoid if you can: peak heat in Bucharest and the plains in July and August, and the Transfăgărășan outside its open season.

Figures are typical for Bucharest unless noted; Transylvania's towns (Cluj, Sibiu, Brașov) run a few degrees cooler and the mountains much colder.
• January and February: Bucharest highs about 2 to 5°C (36 to 41°F), lows around -4 to -6°C (21 to 25°F). Snow in the Carpathians; ski season at Sinaia and Poiana Brașov. Cheap and quiet in the cities.
• March and April: highs about 10 to 18°C (50 to 64°F), muddy in the countryside, cheap. Catholic and Protestant Easter falls on 28 March 2027 and matters in Hungarian-speaking areas of Transylvania.
• May: highs around 23°C (73°F). Orthodox Easter on 2 May 2027 is the biggest holiday of the year; expect full trains and guesthouses that weekend. Otherwise one of the best months.
• June: highs around 27°C (81°F), the greenest month, with afternoon thunderstorms in the hills.
• July and August: Bucharest highs about 29 to 30°C (84 to 86°F), with heatwaves well above that. Peak domestic travel to the Black Sea coast and the mountains. The Transfăgărășan is reliably open.
• September: highs around 24°C (75°F) in Bucharest, cooler in Transylvania. Harvest season, quieter roads, our top pick for a full loop.
• October: highs around 17°C (63°F), autumn colour in the Carpathian forests. When we were here. Nights get cold in Sibiu and Sighișoara, and the Transfăgărășan usually closes by the end of the month.
• November: highs around 9°C (48°F), grey and short days. Cheap; Christmas markets start late in the month.
• December: highs around 3°C (37°F). Christmas markets in Sibiu's Piața Mare, Brașov's Council Square and Bucharest. Festive, cold, and good for city-focused trips.
• Transylvania (Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu, Sighișoara, Brașov): at its best from May to October. The Saxon citadels work in any season but are prettiest in early autumn and at the Christmas markets. See our Cluj-Napoca guide and Sibiu guide.
• The Carpathians and the Prahova Valley (Sinaia, Bran, Bușteni): summer for hiking, December to March for skiing. Peleș Castle at Sinaia and Bran Castle near Brașov stay open year-round; see our Bran Castle guide.
• The Transfăgărășan (DN7C): the high section near Bâlea Lake typically opens from late June or July to late October or early November, depending on snow and avalanches. In 2026 it reopened on 12 June, open daily from 7am to 9pm. Check the road authority's announcements before planning a drive.
• Bucharest and the south: hot summers and cold winters. April, May, September and October are the comfortable months. See our Bucharest guide and day trips from Bucharest.
• Black Sea coast: a summer-only destination; it is busiest in July and August and largely shut out of season.

• Orthodox Easter: Sunday 2 May and Monday 3 May 2027, with Good Friday on 30 April. Easter week is the busiest domestic travel time of spring.
• Orthodox Pentecost: Sunday 20 June 2027.
• 1 May (Labour Day) and 1 December (National Day) are public holidays; 1 December brings parades in Bucharest and Alba Iulia.
• Sighișoara medieval festival: usually the last weekend of July.
• Untold, Cluj-Napoca: usually early August; Cluj hotels sell out and prices jump for that week.
• Christmas markets: usually from late November to around Christmas or New Year in Sibiu, Brașov and Bucharest.
Romania is cheaper than most of the EU all year, but prices still follow domestic holidays: Orthodox Easter, the 1 May weekend, July and August on the coast and in the mountains, and ski weekends in the Prahova Valley from January to March. Bran Castle draws the biggest tour groups in summer and around Halloween.
The best-value months for a full loop like ours (Oradea to Bucharest) are September and early October: warm days, thin crowds, and hotel rates below summer levels. Our tipping guide covers the bill.

• Mid-July to mid-August in Bucharest and the southern plains: hot, and the city empties to the coast.
• November to March if the Transfăgărășan or high hiking is the point of the trip: both are off the table.
• Late November is grey and short-dayed, but cities and castles stay open and prices are at their lowest, so it's fine for a city-focused trip.
November and January to March, outside ski weekends in the Prahova Valley around Sinaia and Brașov.
The high section usually opens from late June or July to late October or early November, depending on snow. In 2026 it reopened on 12 June, open from 7am to 9pm.
Sunday 2 May 2027, with Easter Monday on 3 May and Good Friday on 30 April.
Yes for Transylvania: highs around 17°C in Bucharest, autumn colour in the Carpathians and quiet towns. Nights get cold, and the Transfăgărășan usually closes by the end of the month.
Romania has no monsoon-style rainy season. Late spring and early summer bring the most rain, often as afternoon thunderstorms in the hills.
