Salina Turda Salt Mine: Tickets, Opening Hours and What It's Like UndergroundAttractions & day trips

How much are Salina Turda tickets, what are the opening hours, and how cold is it underground?

By · Published

Salina Turda costs 75 lei for an adult Monday to Friday and 90 lei at weekends and on public holidays. Children aged 3 to 18 and students pay about 48 lei on weekdays and 59 lei at weekends; over-65s pay 50 or 60 lei and under-threes are free. The mine is open daily from 09:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:20, and the underground temperature holds at 11 to 12°C all year, so bring a jacket in July.

Ticket prices and what costs extra

The admission ticket covers the mine itself — the Rudolf and Terezia workings, the underground lake and the terraces. Activities inside are priced separately, typically 35 to 56 lei each for the Ferris wheel, the rowing boats on the underground lake and the minigolf.

• Adults: 75 lei Monday to Friday, 90 lei weekends and public holidays

• Children 3 to 18 and students: about 48 lei weekday, 59 lei weekend

• Over 65: 50 lei weekday, 60 lei weekend

• Under 3: free

Bring ID for any concession — the desk checks. The price gap between weekday and weekend is large enough that shifting the visit by a day is worth considering if your schedule allows it.

The underground temperature is the thing to plan for

The mine holds a constant 11 to 12°C regardless of the season outside. In summer that is a shock: people arrive in shorts from a 30°C day and are cold within twenty minutes. In winter it is milder than the surface, which makes it a genuinely good rainy-or-freezing-day option.

Wear closed shoes with grip. The floors and the ramps down into the Rudolf mine are damp, and the salt surface is uneven. The descent is by a long staircase or a lift, and the air is noticeably saline — fine for most people, but anyone with respiratory sensitivity should take it slowly.

There is no natural light below. Photography is possible but you will want to raise ISO; the lighting is theatrical rather than photographic, and tripods are not practical in the flow of visitors.

Getting to Turda from Cluj-Napoca

Turda is roughly 30 km from Cluj-Napoca, which is where we based ourselves for three days in October 2022 and treated the mine as a half-day trip. Buses and trains run between the two, and the mine is a short taxi or local bus ride from Turda town. If you are driving, there is parking at the site.

The visit itself takes 1.5 to 2 hours at a normal pace, plus time for the activities if you do them. That makes it an easy half-day rather than a full-day outing, and it pairs well with Turda town or with a stop on the way to Alba Iulia.

Book ahead at weekends and in Romanian school holidays. The mine is a popular domestic family destination, and the ticket queue — not the underground space — is the constraint.

Is it worth it?

Yes, if you have any interest in industrial or geological places. Salina Turda is a working salt mine that closed in 1932 and was reopened as a visitor attraction, and the scale of the excavated chambers is the point: the Rudolf mine is a vast cone with a lake at the bottom and a Ferris wheel on a platform above it.

It is also unapologetically a family attraction with a slightly odd health-resort history — the mine was used for speleotherapy, and the atmosphere is part spa, part theme park, part industrial ruin. If you want a solemn heritage experience, this is not it.

What it is: one of the most unusual interiors in Europe, comfortable to visit in any weather, and cheap by Western European standards.
