Two nights minimum, three if you want to hike. We spent 3 days in Theth, 13 to 16 September 2023, between Shkodër and Tirana. The road in from Shkodër takes about 2 to 2.5 hours, and furgons arrive late morning and leave in the early afternoon, so a single night gives you almost nothing. Two nights give one full day: the Grunas waterfall, the Lock-in Tower and the church. Three nights add a second full day for the Blue Eye of Theth or the Valbona pass crossing.
• 1 night: not worth the journey. You arrive late morning and the return furgon leaves in the early afternoon the next day.
• 2 nights: one full day for the village sights and the Grunas waterfall.
• 3 nights: what we had. A second full day for the Blue Eye, or for the Valbona pass if you are crossing to the next valley.
• 4 or more: for serious hikers, or as a weather buffer before the pass.
Theth is a village of stone guesthouses in a valley under 2,000 m peaks, not a town. The reason to come is walking, so count full days, not nights.

Day 1, arrive. Furgons leave Shkodër around 7:00 to 7:30am and take about 2 to 2.5 hours on the paved SH21 over the Buni i Thores pass at about 1,700 m. In the afternoon walk to the Church of Theth, built in 1892 against the limestone ridge, and the Lock-in Tower (Kulla e Ngujimit), where men caught in blood feuds took refuge under the Kanun. See how to get to Theth.
Day 2, Grunas waterfall and the Blue Eye. Grunas is about 40 minutes to an hour on foot from the village. The Blue Eye of Theth, a cold spring pool further down the valley, is about 3 hours each way from Theth; the full loop with Grunas is roughly 19 km and 6 to 7 hours. To shorten it, get a ride of about 20 minutes to Nderlysaj, from where the Blue Eye is about an hour's walk each way.
Day 3, the Valbona pass or rest. The classic crossing to Valbona is about 14 km and 6 to 8 hours over the pass, ending in the next valley. Continue from Valbona to Fierza and take the Lake Koman ferry back toward Shkodër: the Berisha boat leaves Fierza at 13:00. If you are not crossing, use the day for shorter walks and an early night before the return furgon.
Our Theth guide has more on the village and its kulla guesthouses.
On our route Theth followed Shkodër (2 days) and came before Tirana (4), at the start of 31 days in Albania. That is the natural order: Shkodër is the only practical gateway, and Tirana lies further south on the main road.
• From Montenegro: we came from Podgorica to Shkodër; buses take roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. See how many days in Shkodër.
• Driving yourself: the SH21 is paved all the way, so a normal car manages in summer, but take the descents slowly.
• Leaving bags: if you are doing the Valbona crossing and Koman loop, store your main luggage in Shkodër or send it round.
Our 2-week Albania itinerary gives Theth 2 nights in a fortnight; the full route is in our Balkans itinerary.

The season runs roughly June to September, when the pass is clear, guesthouses are open and the trails are walkable. We were there in mid-September, at the end of the season, when the meadows turn golden and the nights get cold. From November, snow can close the road.
Bring enough lek for your whole stay: there are no ATMs in Theth, and card terminals are unreliable. Most guesthouses include dinner and breakfast, cooked at home. See Albania cash and ATMs. Hiking and road safety are covered in is Albania safe, and the food you will be served, from flija to mountain trout, in our Albanian food guide.
With three nights, the most rewarding way to leave Theth is on foot. The loop runs in one direction:
• Shkodër to Theth by furgon, about 2 to 2.5 hours, leaving around 7am.
• Theth to Valbona over the pass, about 14 km and 6 to 8 hours. Sleep in Valbona.
• Valbona to Fierza, then the Lake Koman ferry from Fierza at 13:00, about 2.5 hours through the gorge to Koman.
• Koman to Shkodër by the connecting minibus.
Done this way, the loop takes two nights away from Shkodër, one in Theth and one in Valbona, then a long last day by boat and minibus. Our three nights in Theth were a slower version, with two full days in the valley; add a night in Valbona if you want to cross.
The ferry runs from about mid-April into the autumn, and the pass is only sensible from about June to September, so the loop has a summer window. Pack for a mountain day: layers, rain shell, water and proper boots. If the weather turns, stay an extra night in Theth rather than crossing in fog.

• Coming for one night. Arrival and departure times leave you less than a day in the valley.
• Arriving without cash. There are no ATMs.
• Starting the Blue Eye or Valbona hikes late. Both are long days; leave after an early breakfast.
• Visiting outside June to September. Guesthouses close and the pass can be snowed in.
No. Furgons arrive late morning and leave in the early afternoon the next day, so you get only an afternoon. Two nights give a full day; three give two.
About 3 hours each way from Theth village, or roughly 6 to 7 hours for the loop with the Grunas waterfall. Starting from Nderlysaj cuts it to about an hour each way.
About 14 km and 6 to 8 hours over the Valbona pass. Many people continue to Fierza and take the Koman ferry back toward Shkodër.
Roughly June to September, when the pass is clear and guesthouses are open. From November, snow can close the road.
No. Bring enough Albanian lek in cash for your whole stay before you leave Shkodër.
