One to two days. We spent 2 days in Shkodër, 11 to 13 September 2023, after Podgorica and before going up to Theth. Shkodër's own sights, Rozafa Castle, the Marubi photography museum and the shore of Lake Shkodër, fit into one full day. Most people stay a second night because Shkodër is the gateway to the Albanian Alps: the furgons to Theth leave around 7am, and the Lake Koman ferry sails at 9:00, so you need to sleep in town before either.
• 1 night: arrive, see the centre in the evening, and leave on the morning furgon to Theth. You skip the castle.
• 1 full day (2 nights): what we had. Rozafa Castle in the morning, the Marubi museum and the pedestrian centre in the afternoon, the lake at sunset.
• 2 full days: add the Lake Koman ferry as a day out or as the start of the Theth and Valbona loop.
• 3 or more: only as a base between mountain trips, for example before and after Theth.
Shkodër is pleasant, flat and a cycling city, but it is not a destination you need several days for. Its value is position.

Morning, Rozafa Castle. The castle sits on a rocky hill of about 130 m above the meeting of the rivers, just outside the centre, with views over Lake Shkodër and the plain. Entry is about 400 lek, and the small museum inside is extra. The path up is steep and the old stones are slippery, so wear proper shoes.
Afternoon, the centre. The Marubi National Museum of Photography holds the archive of the Marubi studio, a photographic record of northern Albania going back to the 1850s. Walk the pedestrian street through the centre afterwards.
Evening, Lake Shkodër. The largest lake in the Balkans, shared with Montenegro. Lakeside villages such as Shiroka serve fish from the lake, including baked carp.
Early start, Theth. Furgons leave Shkodër around 7:00 to 7:30am, booked through your guesthouse the day before, and take about 2 to 2.5 hours on the paved SH21, for roughly €10 to €12 (≈ $11.1–13.4) cash. See how to get to Theth.
Or, Lake Koman. The Berisha ferry sails from Koman at 9:00 and back from Fierza at 13:00, about 2.5 hours each way, from mid-April into the autumn; it lists €9 (≈ $10.0) online or €10 (≈ $11.1) cash. The operator runs a 7:00 minibus from Shkodër to the pier. Confirm the timetable before you go.
On our route Shkodër was the way into Albania: Ulcinj (2 days) → Podgorica (2) → Shkodër (2) → Theth (3) → Tirana (4). Buses between Podgorica and Shkodër take roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, through the Božaj / Hani i Hotit crossing; from Ulcinj, the Sukobin / Muriqan crossing is the shorter way.
• Theth: give it at least two nights; see how many days in Theth.
• The loop: Shkodër to Theth by furgon, hike the Valbona pass, then back to Shkodër via Fierza and the Koman ferry. Leave your big bags in Shkodër.
• Tirana: the main airport and rental hub, and our next stop after Theth.
Our 2-week Albania itinerary gives Shkodër one night, and the full 70-day route is in our Balkans itinerary.

June to September, because that is when Theth's guesthouses and trails are open and the Koman ferry is running. We were there in mid-September, at the end of the Theth season. Shkodër itself is fine year-round, but without the mountains there is less reason to stop.
Carry lek in cash: there are no ATMs in Theth, and furgons and small guesthouses take cash. See Albania cash and ATMs and tipping in Albania. For safety and roads, see is Albania safe; for food, our Albanian food guide. More on the country in our Albania guide.
Shkodër is one of the cheapest stops on a Balkans route, and most of its logistics run through your guesthouse.
• Furgon to Theth: roughly €10 to €12 (≈ $11.1–13.4) one way, cash to the driver. Ask your guesthouse the afternoon before; drivers pick up door to door.
• Koman ferry: €9 (≈ $10.0) online or €10 (≈ $11.1) cash with the Berisha operator; other boats charge differently. Cars cost extra.
• Rozafa Castle: about 400 lek, plus the museum.
• Luggage: if you are doing the Theth to Valbona crossing and the ferry loop, ask your Shkodër guesthouse to keep your big bag; you come back through town either way.
Albanian lek is the currency. Withdraw enough at an ATM in Shkodër before heading into the mountains, because Theth has none. Shkodër is also the last easy place to stock up on snacks, a rain layer or hiking socks before the valley, and the town's flat streets make it easy to do all of this on foot or by bike in an afternoon.

• Arriving in Shkodër on the morning you want to go to Theth. The furgons leave around 7am; sleep in Shkodër first.
• Leaving cash until Theth. There are no ATMs in the valley.
• Climbing Rozafa at midday in summer. The hill is exposed; go in the morning or late afternoon.
• Skipping the Koman ferry because you think it is only transport. It is one of the best boat trips in the Balkans, and the timing works from Shkodër.
