How do you get from Sydney Airport to the city centre?

By · Published

Sydney Airport is only about 8 km from the CBD, and the train takes roughly 13 to 15 minutes, but the airport station access fee, $18.61 for an adult per trip on top of the normal fare, makes it one of the most expensive short train rides in the country. A taxi flat-fare trial of $60 to the CBD started on 3 November 2025, and buses such as route 350 skip the airport stations entirely. We spent 2 days in Sydney in February 2023. The access fee, trial taxi rate and bus routes come from Transport for NSW; check its trip planner for the current total, since fees are adjusted each year.

The airport station access fee

The T8 Airport & South line serves the International (T1) and Domestic (T2/T3) terminals, running daily from around 5am to midnight. Airport stations are privately owned by the Airport Link Company, which charges a station access fee on top of the Opal fare. Transport for NSW lists it at $18.61 per adult trip, with a weekly cap of $37.75; the single-trip ticket fee is $19.00. Child and youth is $16.64 per trip. The fee does not count toward the Opal daily or weekly caps, and the 60-minute transfer discount does not apply at airport stations.

Contactless works: an adult can tap on and off with a credit or debit card, or an Opal card, with no setup. The access fee and the fare are shown together in the Trip Planner. For a one-night visit the fee is a big share of the cost; for a longer stay with several airport trips, the weekly cap softens it.

Buses that skip the airport train stations

The big access fee applies at the two airport stations. Transport for NSW also lists flat access fees for trips between the airport stations and Green Square ($12.74) and Mascot ($10.34), which shows the other Airport Link stations carry fees too. Its page does not state the fee for a ride starting at Mascot, so use the Trip Planner before assuming a bus to Mascot plus a train is cheaper.

Route 350 runs from the Domestic Terminal to Bondi Junction via Mascot, Maroubra and Coogee at least every 10 minutes during the day, seven days a week. It avoids the airport train stations altogether and suits anyone heading east. Route 420 runs between Burwood and Mascot Station via Campsie and Rockdale, serving both terminals, about 4am to midnight, which helps if you are staying in the inner west. At night, route N20 runs between Riverwood and the City via the International Terminal from midnight to 4am.

Taxis and the $60 flat-fare trial

A flat-fare trial that started on 3 November 2025 sets taxi fares from Sydney Airport to the CBD at $60 for a standard or wheelchair-accessible taxi, or $80 for a maxi taxi (on request or with five or more passengers). Taxes and tolls are included; card surcharges and cleaning fees are extra. All other taxi trips are metered. As it is a trial, check that it is still running when you land.

Taxis queue outside both terminals. Sydney taxis are metered outside the flat-fare trial. At $60, a taxi is cheaper than the train for two or more people who would each pay $18.61 plus the fare.

Rideshare

Uber and other ride-hailing apps work at Sydney Airport, with designated pickup areas at each terminal. Guides in 2026 put the price in the range of about $35 to $60 to the CBD, rising with demand. Compare the app quote against the $60 taxi flat fare: during peaks, the taxi can be cheaper.

Tolls are included in the taxi flat fare; on a rideshare, check whether the quote includes them. See tipping in Australia: you don't tip taxi drivers in Australia, though rounding up is common.

Practical tips for the first hour

Make sure you have a payment card that works for contactless; Australia is largely cashless and trains accept cards directly. Keep your receipt or app record of the station access fee, which is easy to forget when budgeting. The station is directly accessible from the terminals, no shuttle needed.

If you are arriving for New Year's Eve, trains and roads around the harbour are heavily affected; see the Sydney NYE fireworks guide.

Before you fly and which option to pick

If you are not an Australian or New Zealand citizen, you need a visa or an ETA before arrival; our Australia ETA guide walks through the app. The airport trip happens after a long immigration and customs process, so build in time for that before judging your options.

Heading east to the beaches with light bags: route 350. Solo with heavy bags: train if you accept the fee. Two or more people: $60 taxi. Late night: taxi, rideshare or the N20. See is Australia safe to visit, the best time to visit Australia and how much a trip to Australia costs.
