Yes, Turkey works well for solo travel on the usual route of Istanbul, Cappadocia, Pamukkale and the Aegean coast, where the real risks are scams, taxi overcharging and pickpockets, not violence. The US State Department rates Turkey Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution (reissued 9 June 2026), and warns against the border region with Syria and Iraq; the UK advises against all travel within 10 km of the Syrian border. We spent 33 days in Turkey in October and November 2023: Istanbul (16 days across two visits), Ankara (4), Goreme (5), Pamukkale (3) and Selcuk (5). This page covers safety, solo costs, bases and the solo-specific rules.

Terrorism and arbitrary detentions are the reasons the US lists, so stay alert in crowded places, avoid demonstrations (mostly in Istanbul around Taksim and in Ankara) and do not post political content about Turkish officials while you are there. Details: is Turkey safe to visit.

A man alone is the target of the bar scam around Taksim and Istiklal Avenue: a friendly stranger suggests a drink at a place he knows, and the bill runs to hundreds of euros with staff blocking the door. Choose your own bar, and if it happens call the police on 112. The shoe-shine drop near the Galata Bridge or Istiklal is the other classic: a shiner drops a brush, you pick it up, he gives a free shine and demands money; just walk on. Taxi overcharging is common; insist on the meter or use the BiTaksi app. Pickpockets work the trams, the Grand Bazaar, the Spice Bazaar and Istiklal, so keep your phone in a front pocket. More in tourist scams in Istanbul and Istanbul Airport to the city.
Turkey is a common solo destination for women. Reports mostly describe persistent attention from shop and restaurant touts in Sultanahmet and Goreme rather than danger, and a firm no and walking on works. Dress norms are relaxed in Istanbul and resort towns but more conservative in mosques and rural areas: cover shoulders and knees and carry a scarf for mosque visits. Our sources note that Turkish companies traditionally avoid seating unrelated men and women side by side on buses, so a solo traveler may be moved. Read what is considered rude in Turkey, what to wear in Istanbul and the Blue Mosque dress code guide.
Same-sex relationships are legal, but public attitudes are conservative, and Pride marches in Istanbul have been banned for years. Discretion is the common approach.

Our model's typical band for Turkey is US$25 to $45 per person per day on a budget and US$60 to $100 at mid-range, from published 2025 and 2026 cost guides, not what we spent. Those assume a shared room, and in our estimates a room for yourself raises accommodation roughly 1.5 times on a budget and 2 times at mid-range. Big costs are museum and site tickets priced in euros or high lira amounts, and a Cappadocia balloon flight if you take one. Full budget: how much a trip to Turkey costs. Tipping: tipping in Turkey.
Istanbul (16 days across two visits) is the logical base. Choose the area first: where to stay in Istanbul, the 3 days in Istanbul guide, day trips from Istanbul and what to eat in Istanbul. Goreme (5 days) in Cappadocia is the second base: hiking the valleys alone is fine in daylight, but take water and a map since trails are poorly marked. See the Goreme guide and Istanbul to Cappadocia by flight or night bus.
Pamukkale (3 days) and Selcuk for Ephesus (5 days) are the Aegean pair, with heat and slippery travertine as the hazards. Ankara (4 days) is the capital and a stop on the way to Cappadocia: Istanbul to Ankara by high-speed train. The route in full is in our 33-day Turkey route, and the short version is 10 days in Turkey. Region guide: Istanbul and Cappadocia.

Hostels in Istanbul and Goreme are the easiest way, with rooftop breakfasts, group balloon and valley tours, and walking tours in the old city. Turkish hospitality means tea invitations are common; the line between a friendly invitation and a carpet-shop setup is whether it leads to a shop. Accept tea in a cafe you chose, and decline a walk to a cousin's shop.
