Transit & logisticsFlying is the fastest way from Istanbul to Cappadocia: the flight takes about 75 minutes, and the transfer to Göreme adds roughly 40 to 45 minutes from Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV) or about an hour to 1 hour 15 minutes from Kayseri (ASR). The overnight bus from Istanbul's Esenler terminal takes about 10 to 12 hours and costs less, but you arrive tired at around 7am. Here is how the two airports compare, what the night bus is really like, whether driving makes sense, and how many days to give Cappadocia.

Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV) is about 40 km from Göreme, roughly a 40 to 45 minute drive. It has fewer flights: in 2026 the scheduled service from Istanbul is mainly Turkish Airlines from Istanbul Airport (IST) and AJet from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), often only a couple of departures a day.
Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR) is about 75 km from Göreme, roughly an hour to 1 hour 15 minutes by road. It is a bigger city airport with more daily flights from both IST and SAW, including Pegasus from Sabiha Gökçen, so it is often cheaper and has more convenient times.
Rule of thumb: take NAV if a flight time suits you, because the transfer is shorter; take Kayseri if it saves money or gets you a better departure. Schedules are seasonal, so compare both airports on the same day before you book.
There is no useful public bus from either airport straight to Göreme. Most travelers use a shared shuttle timed to flight arrivals, which drops off at hotels in Göreme, Uçhisar and Ürgüp. Book it in advance through your hotel or a shuttle company with your flight number; with several hotel stops it can take 1.5 to 2 hours from Kayseri.
A private transfer costs more per car: online quotes from Kayseri airport to Göreme in 2026 ranged from about €45 to €95 depending on the company and vehicle. Turning up without a booking usually costs more, and late-evening flights may have no shared shuttle at all, so arrange the transfer when you book the flight.
Istanbul Airport is far from the old city, so leave generous time to reach it. Our Istanbul airport transport guide covers the Havaist bus, metro and taxi options.
Overnight buses leave from Esenler otogar (Istanbul's main bus station on the European side) in the evening, typically around 19:00 to 21:00, and arrive around 7am after 10 to 12 hours, longer in winter or heavy traffic. The main companies are Metro Turizm, Kamil Koç, Nevşehir Seyahat and Süha. Booking sites in 2026 listed fares of roughly ₺950 to ₺1,500 one way; Turkish fares rise often, so treat that as a guide.
Many buses terminate at Nevşehir otogar, outside the city, where the company runs a free minibus (servis) on to Göreme. Some go on to Göreme otogar, in the middle of the village. Check which one your ticket names and, if possible, pick a service that ends in Göreme.
• Seats on the better coaches are 2+1 with seat-back screens, and an attendant hands out tea, water and snacks.
• Expect one or two rest stops at roadside service areas, often in the middle of the night.
• Turkish companies traditionally avoid seating unrelated men and women side by side, so solo travelers may be moved.
The bus saves a hotel night and costs a fraction of a last-minute flight. The price is a broken night's sleep, and the morning of arrival is usually written off.
It is about 730 km, roughly 8 to 9 hours with a lunch stop, mostly on toll motorways via Ankara and then through Aksaray or Kırşehir to Nevşehir. Rental cars in Turkey normally come with an HGS toll sticker, and the tolls are billed to you afterwards.
Driving only makes sense if you want a car in Cappadocia anyway and plan to continue elsewhere in Anatolia. For a there-and-back trip, a one-way rental fee plus fuel and tolls usually costs more than two flights, and you lose two full days on the road.
Give Cappadocia at least two nights, and three if you want a balloon flight. Balloons fly only at sunrise and are cancelled for wind or poor visibility on a large share of mornings, so booking on your first morning leaves a spare dawn to rebook. Our balloon cancellation guide explains how the daily go/no-go decision works.
Do not book a balloon for the morning you arrive on the night bus: hotel pickups start well before dawn, so you would need to be in Göreme the evening before. A practical plan is to fly in, sleep two or three nights, and fly or bus out. For a full route covering both cities, see our Istanbul and Cappadocia itinerary and the Göreme guide.
About 75 minutes to Kayseri or Nevşehir, plus a road transfer of roughly 40 to 45 minutes from Nevşehir or about an hour to 1 hour 15 minutes from Kayseri to Göreme.
Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV) is closer, about 40 km from Göreme. Kayseri (ASR) is about 75 km away but has more flights and is often cheaper.
About 10 to 12 hours overnight from Esenler bus station, arriving around 7am in Nevşehir or Göreme, and longer in winter or heavy traffic.
It is worth it if saving money and a hotel night matters most. Seats on the main companies are reasonably comfortable, but expect a broken night's sleep and a slow first morning.
Two nights at minimum, and three if you want a hot air balloon ride, because balloons are often cancelled for weather and a spare sunrise lets you rebook.
Entry rules change, and they depend on your nationality — always confirm the current requirements on the official government site before you book or apply. Only use official government (.gov) portals; ignore look-alike agency sites.
