Transit & logisticsFrom Istanbul Airport (IST) to Sultanahmet, the simplest option is the Havaist airport bus, whose Sultanahmet line was back in service in 2026 at a fare of €8 (paid by card). The cheapest is the M11 metro to Gayrettepe, then onward by metro and tram, which takes longer with bags. A metered taxi for the roughly 50 km ride works out at around ₺2,500 or more on the July 2026 tariff, plus any tolls.

Havaist is the official airport bus operator, with 11 routes into the city. Buses board on the airport's transportation floor (-2); follow the signs from arrivals. Havaist says credit cards are accepted on its buses, and the buses have no seat reservation system: you just turn up.
The Sultanahmet line is the one most first-time visitors want. Havaist's own July 2026 notice lists it at €8, running between Çatladıkapı (Sultanahmet), Eminönü Pier and Şişhane before heading to the airport. Taksim has its own routes, and other routes reach Aksaray, Esenler bus terminal and other districts. Fares on most city routes were around ₺370 to ₺430 in 2026, but they're raised often, so check the current fare and timetable on hava.ist before you fly.
Allow 75 to 90 minutes or more to the old city, longer at rush hour.
The M11 metro line runs from a station beneath the airport terminal south to Gayrettepe, about 35 minutes, where it connects with the M2 line. Since June 20, 2026 it also runs west to Halkalı. Pay with an Istanbulkart, the city's rechargeable transit card, which you can buy and top up from machines at metro stations. The airport line charges by the number of stations rather than a flat fare, but it's still a small fraction of the bus or taxi price.
To reach Sultanahmet, change at Gayrettepe to the M2 toward Yenikapı, get off at Vezneciler, then walk to the T1 tram at Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı for the short ride to Sultanahmet. For Taksim, stay on the M2 to Taksim. It's the best-value option if you're traveling light, but with large suitcases the transfers and stairs add up; allow 75 to 90 minutes to Sultanahmet.
From July 20, 2026, Istanbul's standard full fare on Istanbulkart rose to ₺46.20 for buses and metro, so budget a little more than older guides suggest.
Istanbul taxis come in three tiers. Yellow taxis are the standard metered cabs. Turquoise taxis are a mid-tier with a higher tariff, and black taxis are the premium tier with the highest rates. At the airport rank, confirm the color before you get in if you want the cheapest.
Istanbul's meter tariff rose on July 20, 2026 to an opening fee of ₺71.94 and ₺47.92 per km, with a ₺230 short-distance fee. For the roughly 50 km from IST to Sultanahmet that works out at around ₺2,500 before tolls and traffic waiting time; Taksim is similar. Make sure the meter is running from the start, and pay the metered amount.
BiTaksi is a local app for booking licensed Istanbul taxis, which helps avoid haggling over the fare. For tipping cabbies, the norm is rounding up; see our Turkey tipping guide.
If you land at Sabiha Gökçen on the Asian side, the M4 metro runs from the airport to Kadıköy, about 50 minutes, using the same Istanbulkart. From Kadıköy, a ferry crosses the Bosphorus to Eminönü, a short walk or tram ride from Sultanahmet.
Havabus runs airport buses from SAW to Taksim and Kadıköy; check havabus.com for current fares. Taxis from SAW to the European side are a long ride across a bridge, so expect a higher fare than from IST to Sultanahmet when traffic is heavy.
With luggage and no hotel transfer, the Havaist Sultanahmet line is the best balance of cost and effort. Solo and light, the M11 metro is cheapest. Arriving late, in a group of three or four, or with children, a yellow taxi or BiTaksi booking is easiest and the per-person cost comes down.
