Seasonal travelNyepi is Monday 8 March 2027, according to Indonesia’s government holiday calendar published on 15 September 2026. Bali’s Day of Silence means planning to remain at your accommodation, not treating the holiday as a sightseeing day. We have not verified a 2027 airport operating notice, so the exact shutdown and reopening times below are not presented as confirmed. Our Bali visit was in May–June 2023, not during Nyepi. Checked 21 October 2026.

The State Secretariat’s 2027 holiday list names 8 March as Nyepi, the Saka New Year 1949. Use that official publication rather than an undated calendar giving a different day.
The same calendar lists Eid al-Fitr holidays on 10–11 March and collective leave on 9, 12 and 15 March; the religious determination remains subject to the Minister of Religious Affairs. These are separate from Nyepi. If travelling through other Indonesian islands, check the whole week rather than assuming normal operations immediately after Bali’s Day of Silence.
Indonesia’s tourism ministry explains that Nyepi restrictions apply to visitors too: normal road traffic stops, people remain indoors or within their accommodation arrangements, and beaches and streets are not places to go walking. Light and noise are restricted. Follow your host’s instructions rather than treating an empty street as an invitation to explore.
Its older visitor guidance describes a 24-hour observance and airport closure, traditionally from 06:00 to 06:00 the following day. That is the established pattern, not a verified 2027 flight notice. Confirm the coming year’s arrangements with the airport, airline and hotel before booking travel close to the holiday.
Ask the accommodation how meals will work, whether you must preorder, which shared areas will be available and how light and noise restrictions are handled. A private villa and a staffed hotel may offer very different practical support; do not infer services from a generic Nyepi description.
Our suggested checklist is simple: arrive with enough time to settle in, have the food and everyday supplies you need, download something to read and keep essential contact details available offline. Confirm internet arrangements with your host rather than assuming either uninterrupted access or a universal shutdown.
If you need assistance during the observance, speak to accommodation staff. Do not make an independent journey simply because an ordinary transfer or delivery app appears available.
Leave a buffer on both sides of the holiday. Do not plan a transfer during the expected quiet period, and check any ferry or inter-island connection separately. A national holiday calendar confirms the date; it is not a transport timetable.
The tourism ministry describes ogoh-ogoh processions on the eve of Nyepi. Local routes and times vary, and we have not verified a 2027 programme. Ask locally where visitors may watch respectfully and how to return before restrictions begin.
For the rest of your stay, our 18-day Bali route and how many days in Bali help choose bases. Add the quiet day to your stay rather than subtracting it from a packed list of excursions.
Indonesia’s State Secretariat lists Monday 8 March 2027 as Nyepi. This guide follows that official calendar.
No. A 24-hour closure is the established Nyepi pattern, but this guide has not verified a 2027 operating notice. Check your airline and the airport.
No. Official tourism guidance says visitors must respect the restrictions on going out, including to streets and beaches.
Entry rules change, and they depend on your nationality — always confirm the current requirements on the official government site before you book or apply. Only use official government (.gov) portals; ignore look-alike agency sites.
