Lebaran (Idul Fitri) 2027 falls on Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 March, with collective leave days on 9, 12 and 15 March, under the joint ministerial decree Indonesia published in September 2026. That makes roughly 6 to 16 March the mudik peak, when tens of millions travel home. In Bali it lands straight after Nyepi on Monday 8 March, so the island goes from a full 24-hour shutdown into Indonesia's busiest travel week. If you are flying into Bali and staying put, Lebaran mostly means fuller beaches and higher domestic fares. If you are crossing Java by road, rail or ferry that week, it changes everything. We were in Bali from 19 May to 6 June 2023, with a night in Banyuwangi for Mt. Ijen, which is the Java side of the Bali ferry crossing discussed below; we were not there for Lebaran.
Indonesia's 2027 public holiday list was set by a joint decree of the Ministers of Religious Affairs, Manpower and Administrative Reform, signed on 15 September 2026. For Idul Fitri 1448 H it gives:
• National holidays: Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 March 2027.
• Cuti bersama (collective leave): Tuesday 9, Friday 12 and Monday 15 March 2027. These are fixed for civil servants and optional for private companies, but most offices follow them.
• The weekend in between: 13 and 14 March, so many people are off from Saturday 6 March to Monday 15 March.
The exact date of 1 Syawal is confirmed by the Ministry of Religious Affairs after its sidang isbat near the end of Ramadan, and Muhammadiyah sometimes marks Eid a day earlier. Plan around 10 March but expect the government's final announcement only a day or two ahead.
Nyepi (the Balinese Day of Silence) is Monday 8 March 2027, from 06:00 to 06:00 the next morning. Full rules, including the airport closure, are in our Nyepi 2027 guide.

Mudik is the annual trip home to the family village for Lebaran. It is the single largest movement of people in Indonesia each year, and it hits every mode of transport at once.
• Flights: domestic fares on Jakarta, Surabaya and Yogyakarta routes peak in the days before Eid (going home) and in the week after (arus balik, the return). Bali to Java flights fill in both directions.
• Trains: KAI sells long-distance tickets a set number of days ahead, and Lebaran seats on Java's main lines sell out within hours of release. If you want a train across Java between about 3 and 18 March, buy the moment sales open on the KAI Access app.
• Toll roads: the Trans-Java toll road runs one-way and odd-even schemes on peak days. Car travel between cities that week can take twice as long.
• Ferries: the short Ketapang (Banyuwangi) to Gilimanuk (west Bali) crossing is the bottleneck between Java and Bali. In 2026, when Nyepi and Lebaran were also a few days apart, ASDP forecast about 1.67 million passengers on that crossing for the season, and queues toward Gilimanuk reached roughly 30 km by 15 March. The ferry also stops for Nyepi itself.
If your plan is the classic overland route from Java into Bali via Mt. Ijen and Banyuwangi, move it to before 1 March or after 20 March 2027.
Bali is mostly Hindu, so Lebaran is not a local festival here the way it is in Java. What changes is who is on holiday:
• Many Muslim workers in Bali's hotels, warungs and transport go home to Java or Lombok for the week. Some small warungs run by Javanese families close, and drivers are scarcer.
• Indonesian domestic tourists arrive in large numbers. Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu and Ubud get noticeably busier, and Tanah Lot, Tegallalang and the Ubud Monkey Forest have weekend-style crowds every day of the week.
• Room rates rise for the holiday week, though not as far as in July, August or Christmas.
• Bali's Ngurah Rai airport stays open for Lebaran; the only closure is Nyepi, 8 March 06:00 to 9 March 06:00.
The combination in 2027 is the tight part: anyone wanting to leave Bali for Java on Lebaran eve cannot fly or sail on Nyepi, so 7 and 9 March are likely to be among the busiest departure days. If you are landing in Bali that week, avoid those two days; arrival tips are in our Bali airport arrival guide.

In Java's cities the experience splits in two. Jakarta empties out and is unusually calm for a few days; Yogyakarta, Solo and Malang fill up with returning families and domestic tourists, and Borobudur and Prambanan are at their busiest. On Eid morning itself the mass prayer happens in mosques, fields and closed-off streets, followed by family visits, so many shops and restaurants close on 10 March and some on 11 March. Malls and hotel restaurants stay open.
Lombok is mainly Muslim and behaves like Java: quiet on Eid day, busy beaches and ferries afterward. The Gili Islands keep running for tourists, but fast boats from Bali book out.
Respect points: avoid eating and drinking openly in the street during the day in Ramadan in Java and Lombok (Bali is relaxed), and dress modestly near mosques. Our Indonesia etiquette guide covers the rest.
• Best case: be in Bali, stay put from 6 to 16 March, and book your room early. Two weeks in one or two bases works well; see how many days in Bali.
• Avoid any Java to Bali overland crossing or long-distance train between about 3 and 18 March.
• Domestic flights: book as soon as you have dates, and avoid 7, 9 and 16 to 17 March.
• Ramadan before Eid: in Java, many restaurants hang curtains in the daytime and street food appears in the late afternoon for buka puasa. That is a good time to visit Yogyakarta if you leave before 5 March.
• Weather: March is the end of the wet season, with heavy afternoon showers. Month-by-month detail is in best time to visit Bali.
Our 18-day Bali route and Ubud guide work as quieter bases for the week; Munduk and Sidemen see far fewer holiday crowds than the south coast.

Idul Fitri is Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 March 2027, with collective leave on 9, 12 and 15 March. The final date is confirmed by the Ministry of Religious Affairs shortly before.
Yes. Indonesian domestic tourists fill Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu and Ubud, and many Javanese workers go home. The airport stays open; the only closure is Nyepi on 8 March 2027.
Nyepi is Monday 8 March and Lebaran is 10 and 11 March. Bali shuts down for 24 hours on Nyepi, so departures pile up on 7 and 9 March.
Avoid it between about 3 and 18 March 2027. In 2026 queues toward Gilimanuk reached about 30 km, and the Ketapang to Gilimanuk ferry also stops for Nyepi.
