The cheapest reliable way from Tangier to Chefchaouen is the CTM bus: about 2.5 to 3 hours, roughly 60 to 90 MAD (about $6 to $9), with several departures a day. Shared grand taxis are a little faster but usually mean changing cars in Tetouan. A private driver costs roughly 700 to 1,000 MAD (≈ $71–102) per car door to door, which is good value for three or four people or straight off the ferry. There is no train to Chefchaouen.

CTM runs this route several times a day; 2026 listings show about five or six departures, with the first in the early morning (around 7:45 has been listed) and the last in the evening. Travel time is about 2 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours: some services stop in Tetouan, which adds time even when the ticket says direct. Fares quoted in 2025 and 2026 range from about 60 to 90 MAD (≈ $6.1–9.1) one way, with CTM's discounted fares at the lower end.
Buses leave from the CTM station on the Rocade in Tangier, roughly 15 minutes by petit taxi from the medina and the port. We could not load CTM's own timetable this session, so check times on CTM's site or app, or at the counter, and book a day ahead in summer, when the few morning seats go first. Checked bags carry a small cash fee; keep the tag stub.

Shared grand taxis are the local way to go, but there is usually no direct shared taxi: you ride one to Tetouan (about an hour), then walk or take a petit taxi to the stand for Chefchaouen and ride a second one (about 1.5 hours). You pay per seat for each leg, and each car leaves when its six seats are full. Recent per-seat quotes vary widely, so ask your riad what the current fare is before you go and agree it at the stand.
It can be quicker than the bus if the cars fill fast, but it is cramped with luggage and harder without some French or Darija. Buying two seats in each car gives you room and speeds up departure.
A private transfer door to door takes about 2 to 2.5 hours and costs roughly 700 to 1,000 MAD (≈ $71–102) per car from Tangier city or Tangier Ibn Battouta airport, and more from the Tanger Med ferry port, which is east of the city. Split three or four ways it is close to the bus per person, and the driver can stop at a viewpoint over the Rif.
This is the sensible choice if you arrive on a late ferry from Spain, since it avoids crossing Tangier to the CTM station. Our Tarifa to Tangier ferry guide explains which port you will land at. Agree the price, the drop-off gate and payment in dirhams before you set off, and see our driver tipping guide.

Buses stop at Chefchaouen's gare routière on Avenue Maghreb Arabe, below the town. The medina's main gate, Bab el Ain, is about 15 minutes' walk uphill or a short petit taxi ride; agree the fare first, as drivers sometimes quote tourists several times the normal price.
Taxis cannot enter the blue medina's stepped lanes, so you will walk the last part. Ask your riad which gate is closest and whether someone can meet you. Our 2 days in Chefchaouen itinerary covers the Spanish Mosque viewpoint walk and Ras el Ma.
A day trip from Tangier is possible on the first CTM bus and an evening bus back, giving 5 or 6 hours in Chefchaouen for 5 to 6 hours of travel. That works, but the town is busiest with day-trippers from late morning to late afternoon, so an overnight lets you see the lanes when they are quiet. Most travelers continue south instead: our Fes to Chefchaouen guide covers the next leg in reverse.

We spent 3 days in Tangier at the end of August 2022, then 3 days in Chefchaouen before moving on to Fes. That order, ferry into Tangier, then the Rif, then the imperial cities, is the natural north-to-south line; see our 24-day Morocco route.
Carry cash dirhams for luggage fees and taxis; our Morocco money guide covers ATMs and exchange. Chefchaouen is conservative and cool at night in the mountains, so check what to wear in Morocco, and confirm entry rules on do I need a visa for Morocco.
If you would rather drive, the road via Tetouan climbs into the Rif with bends and slow trucks in the last stretch, so allow extra time and avoid arriving after dark. See our driving in Morocco guide for checkpoints and fines.
About 2 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours with CTM; services that stop in Tetouan take longer.
Roughly 60 to 90 MAD (≈ $6.1–9.1) one way as quoted in 2025 and 2026, plus a small cash luggage fee.
Usually not as a shared taxi: you change cars in Tetouan. A private hired car goes direct.
No. The railway does not reach Chefchaouen; the CTM bus, grand taxis or a private driver are the options.
