What is South Korea like in October?

By · Published

October is the best month for hiking and the most dependable weather of the year in South Korea: dry, clear days with Seoul at about 20.2°C (68°F) by day and 10.6°C (51°F) at night, and autumn leaves that start on the high peaks of Seoraksan in late September and reach the cities in November. The trade-offs are two long holiday weekends in 2027 (3 to 4 October and 9 to 11 October), crowded foliage spots, and Seoraksan rooms that go early. We were in South Korea from 7 June to 9 July 2023, so we have not seen October; the weather figures are Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) 1991 to 2020 normals, and holiday dates come from the Korea AeroSpace Administration calendar as reported in the Korean press.

Quick answer for October

• Weather: the driest, most settled month for travel. Warm afternoons, cool nights, little humidity.

• Foliage: Seoraksan from the last days of September, peak colour on the slopes around the cable car in the second half of October; Seoul's peak is late October into early November.

• Crowds: the heaviest of the year outside spring. Foliage weekends and the two October holiday weekends are the squeeze points.

• Prices: expect higher rates around Seoraksan and on the holiday weekends; midweek is easier on both rooms and trains.

• Skip October if: you cannot book ahead or you dislike queues. Go in early October or the first days of November for fewer people.

October weather by city

KMA 1991 to 2020 normals as listed for each city; individual days vary by several degrees.

• Seoul: highs 20.2°C (68°F), lows 10.6°C (51°F), about 52 mm of rain across the month. Add a layer after dark, particularly late in the month.

• Busan: highs 22.5°C (72°F), lows 14.5°C (58°F), about 80 mm. Mild enough for the waterfront temples without a coat.

• Jeju City: highs 21.6°C (71°F), lows 15.7°C (60°F), about 95 mm. Some rain days, but the island stays green and the coastal paths are comfortable.

• Sokcho (for Seoraksan): highs 19.5°C (67°F), lows 10.8°C (51°F), about 88 mm. The park itself is colder: at altitude, bring a warm layer and gloves for dawn starts.

Evenings get noticeably colder as the month goes on, so a thin down jacket is a safe bet for Seoul at the end of October.

Fall foliage: where and when

Foliage in Korea moves from the high mountains down to the cities over about six weeks. A 2026 forecast by the private weather service Weatheri, reported in the Korean press, put first colour at Seoraksan around 27 to 30 September and peak colour around 16 to 25 October, and central regions in the last days of October to the first days of November. These are forecasts, not guarantees, and warm autumns run a few days late; the Korea Forest Service publishes an official foliage map in the second half of September.

Seoraksan is the headline. Our Sokcho guide notes that mid-October to early November is the peak around Seorak-dong and the cable car, with waits of 2 to 3 hours common, so give it a full extra day. We spent 3 days in Sokcho from 1 to 4 July 2023. Buses from Seoul are in the Sokcho and Seoraksan day trip guide.

In Seoul, the palaces and the Namsan slopes fall in the late October to early November window. Foliage reaches the southern cities after the capital, so Gyeongju and Jeonju are better bets in early November than early October. We spent 3 days each in Gyeongju and Jeonju in June 2023.

Public holidays and events in October 2027

• Gaecheonjeol (National Foundation Day): Sunday 3 October, with a substitute holiday on Monday 4 October. The calendar treats 2 to 4 October as a three-day break.

• Hangeul Day: Saturday 9 October, with a substitute holiday on Monday 11 October, making 9 to 11 October another long weekend.

• Chuseok is Wednesday 15 September 2027 inside a 14 to 16 September break, so it falls before October this year.

These holidays send Koreans to the east coast, Jeju and the mountains, so intercity trains, express buses and Sokcho rooms fill first. Book the KTX early (Seoul to Busan KTX guide) and avoid travelling on the first and last days of each break.

Festival dates for October 2027 (film, fireworks, lantern events) are not published yet. Check the city tourism boards a few months out.

Suggested route and base

A 10 to 12 day October route that follows the leaves: 4 days in Seoul, 2 days in Sokcho for Seoraksan, then south by KTX to Busan (3 days) and Gyeongju (1 to 2). Our 10-day South Korea itinerary is the template, and the longer 32-day route we followed shows how Jeonju, Suncheon and Jeju fit in.

Jeju (we spent 4 days in Seogwipo and 2 in Jeju City) is mild in October, with Jeju City at about 21.6°C (71°F) by day. See how many days in Jeju.

Entry and money: many nationalities need the K-ETA (K-ETA 2027 guide). Budget levels are in the cost guide.

What to pack

Layers again: a long-sleeve top, a light sweater, a packable jacket, comfortable walking shoes with grip for rocky trails, and a hat and gloves if you start Seoraksan at dawn. A small daypack, a refillable bottle and a phone with offline maps help on the trails. Our South Korea packing list goes item by item, and what to wear in South Korea covers temple and city dress.
