How Many Days in Jeju? 4 Days Split Between Seogwipo and Jeju City (We Spent 6)Destinations & Itineraries

How many days do you need on Jeju Island?

By · Published

Four days. We spent 6 days on Jeju in June 2023: 4 in Seogwipo on the south coast (22 to 26 June) and 2 in Jeju City in the north (26 to 28 June), between Busan and Gyeongju. Jeju is about 70 km across and its sights sit on different sides of the island, so the useful unit is the side, not the attraction: one day east, one day south, one day west and one for Hallasan. Three days works if you drop the summit; five or six suits travellers without a car, who lose time to slow buses, and anyone who wants to walk the Olle trails.

The short answer by trip length

• 2 days: the east (Seongsan Ilchulbong, Udo) and the south (Seogwipo's waterfalls). The minimum for a flight over.

• 3 days: add the west coast, or Hallasan's shorter trails.

• 4 days: the recommendation. East, south, west and a Hallasan day.

• 5 to 6 days: what we had. Two bases, slower bus days, and sections of the Olle trail. Without a car this is the comfortable length.

Split your nights: Seogwipo for the south coast and Olle trails, Jeju City for the airport and the north and east. Our Jeju without a car guide explains why two bases beat one.

Day by day: 4 days on Jeju

Day 1, east. Seongsan Ilchulbong, the tuff cone rising from the sea, opens before dawn in summer for the sunrise and costs 5,000 won; it closes on the first Monday of each month. The climb to the crater rim takes 20 to 30 minutes. Watch the haenyeo divers' demonstration on the beach below, then take the 15-minute ferry from Seongsan Port to Udo (bring your passport). On the way back, Manjanggul lava tube reopened on 30 May 2026, with about 1 km open.

Day 2, south. Jeongbang Falls drops about 23 metres off a basalt cliff straight into the sea; walk down to the rocks at its base. Add Cheonjiyeon, open into the evening, and Olle route 7 west past Oedolgae rock. Eat at Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market. Our Seogwipo guide covers the town.

Day 3, west. Jusangjeolli basalt columns, Sanbangsan and the cliff path at Songaksan, then Hyeopjae beach. This is the side that is easiest by car or day tour.

Day 4, Hallasan. The summit trails, Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa, need a free reservation on the national park site and have midday cutoff checkpoints; allow 8 to 9 hours on Seongpanak. The Yeongsil and Eorimok trails need no booking and make a half-day. Put this day mid-trip so you have a weather backup. More detail is in our Jeju highlights guide.

Where Jeju fits in a wider Korea route

On our 32-day route, Jeju was the far point of the loop: we arrived from Busan (4 days) and went on to Gyeongju. That means flying in and out of Busan's Gimhae airport, about an hour in the air, and then a 30-minute KTX from Busan to Gyeongju. From Seoul, the Gimpo to Jeju route is the busiest air route in the world by seats, so flights are frequent.

On the island, red express buses 181 and 182 link Jeju City and Seogwipo around Hallasan, and the slow coastal buses 201 (east) and 202 (west) reach the beaches. Jeju's buses have been cashless since October 2024, so carry a T-money card. Our 10-day South Korea itinerary treats Jeju as a 2- to 3-day add-on after Busan.

Why we split Jeju into two bases

Jeju looks small on a map, but Hallasan sits in the middle, so every journey between north and south goes around or over it. Our two bases, 4 nights in Seogwipo and then 2 in Jeju City, matched the island's layout: the south coast first, then the north and east near the airport.

• Seogwipo has three waterfalls within a short taxi ride, the harbour and the Maeil Olle Market on foot, and Olle routes 6 and 7 passing through town.

• Jeju City has the airport, the most bus connections and the shortest ride to the east coast via bus 201 or the red express toward Seongsan.

• Seongsan is the third option if the sunrise climb is a priority.

If you are driving, one base works, and Seogwipo or Jungmun is the better choice for the south and west. Without a car, two bases cut the long cross-island rides, and the airport limousine buses run directly between the airport and Seogwipo.

The order matters too. Ending in Jeju City puts you near the airport for the flight out, and it means the east-side sights, Seongsan Ilchulbong, Udo and Manjanggul, fall at the end of the stay, when you know which day has the clearest weather for the sunrise climb. Start in the south, where the waterfalls and the Olle trails are enjoyable even under cloud.

When to go

Spring (April and May, with canola fields in flower) and autumn (September to November, for clear coastal views) are the best seasons. Summer is warm but wet: the jangma rainy season reaches Jeju first, around 19 June on long-run averages, and our dates in late June fell right on the 2023 onset. Seogwipo's waterfalls run heaviest then, under grey skies, and Hallasan closes in heavy rain.

Winter is mild compared with the mainland, though Hallasan gets snow and the summit trails can close.

Common mistakes

• One base for the whole island. Without a car, staying only in Jeju City means long bus rides to the south coast and back.

• Showing up for Hallasan's summit without a reservation. You will be turned away at the trailhead.

• Planning Seongsan's sunrise on the first Monday of the month. It is closed.

• Carrying cash for the bus. Jeju's buses no longer take it.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3 days in Jeju enough?

Yes, for the east (Seongsan Ilchulbong and Udo), the south (Seogwipo's waterfalls) and either the west coast or Hallasan's shorter trails. Four days covers all of them. We spent 6.

Should I stay in Jeju City or Seogwipo?

Both, if you can. Seogwipo is best for the south coast and Olle trails, Jeju City for the airport and the east. We spent 4 nights in Seogwipo and 2 in Jeju City.

Do you need a reservation to hike Hallasan?

Only for the summit trails, Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa; the reservation is free. The Yeongsil and Eorimok trails need no booking.

Can you see Jeju without a car?

Yes. Red express buses 181 and 182 link Jeju City and Seogwipo, and coastal buses 201 and 202 reach the east and west. Buses are cashless, so carry a T-money card, and allow an extra day.
