Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival 2027: Dates, Getting There from Busan and SeoulSeasonal travel

When is the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival 2027 and how do you get there?

By · Published

The Jinhae Gunhangje, Korea's biggest cherry blossom festival, usually runs for about ten days from late March to early April; the 2027 dates are not announced yet, but the 2026 edition ran from 27 March to 5 April. Jinhae is a district of Changwon on the south coast, about an hour or two from Busan by road, with around 350,000 cherry trees. Admission to the festival areas is free. The trade-off is crowds: weekends at Yeojwacheon and Gyeonghwa Station are packed and the roads in jam. We spent 4 days in Busan in June 2023, well after the blossoms; Busan is still the base we recommend for Jinhae.

Jinhae Gunhangje 2027 dates

Changwon city sets the festival dates each winter, usually announced in January or February, based on the bloom forecast. The pattern over recent years is a ten-day run starting in the last week of March: in 2026 it was 27 March to 5 April, its 64th edition. Expect 2027 to fall in roughly the same window, and treat any specific 2027 dates you see before the official announcement as estimates.

Blossoms on the south coast open about a week or more before Seoul. Peak bloom lasts only about a week, and rain or wind can strip the trees early. If you can, keep a couple of flexible days in your itinerary and watch the Korea Meteorological Administration's forecast from February. For Japan's equivalent, see our cherry blossom 2027 forecast.

Where to go in Jinhae

• Yeojwacheon Stream: about 1.5 km of stream lined with trees that meet overhead, with the Romance Bridge made famous by a 2002 Korean drama. Best early morning; in the evening the trees are lit.

• Gyeonghwa Station: a disused railway station where the track runs through a tunnel of cherry trees. It is the most photographed spot and the most crowded.

• Jungwon Rotary: the centre of the festival, with the main events and stalls, and the streets radiating from it lined with trees.

• Jehwangsan Park: a hill park with a pagoda-style tower and a view over the blossoms and the port, reached by a long stairway or a monorail.

Jinhae is also a naval base, the origin of the festival's name (gunhang means naval port). Some military areas open to the public during the festival, and there is usually a military band and honour guard event; check the official programme for 2027 timings.

Getting there from Busan and Seoul

From Busan (recommended base): intercity buses run to Jinhae; allow about an hour to two in festival traffic. Many visitors instead take a day tour or a pre-booked shuttle, which avoids the bus queues. Go on a weekday if at all possible, and leave early, by 8am, to beat the traffic into Jinhae.

From Seoul: the KTX to Changwon Jungang Station takes about three hours, then a local bus or taxi to Jinhae. Direct express buses from Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Jinhae take about four and a half hours. As a same-day round trip from Seoul it is a very long day, so spend at least one night in Busan or Changwon. Our Seoul to Busan KTX guide covers the train side, and a T-money card works on Changwon and Jinhae city buses.

Inside Jinhae, walk. Roads around Jungwon Rotary close to traffic, and a taxi between sites can take longer than walking the 20 to 30 minutes.

Crowds, hotels and timing

The festival draws very large crowds, heaviest on the two weekends. Jinhae itself has limited hotels, which go early, so most people stay in Busan or in Changwon. Busan hotels in late March and early April are not at summer-beach prices, but rooms near Busan Station or Seomyeon, handy for buses and trains, are popular. Book once the dates are announced.

For photos at Gyeonghwa Station or Yeojwacheon without the crush, arrive at sunrise on a weekday. In the afternoon, the queue to step onto the Gyeonghwa tracks for a photo can be long.

Cherry blossoms in Seoul and the rest of Korea

If you are in Seoul instead, the blossoms there usually peak in the first half of April. The Yeouido Spring Flower Festival along Yeouiseo-ro behind the National Assembly is the biggest, and Seokchon Lake by Lotte World Tower is the other classic; in 2026 Seokchon's festival was 29 March to 6 April. Gyeongju, which is on our route (3 days in late June 2023), has blossoms around Bomun Lake and the old royal tombs about the same time as Jinhae.

Plan the route south to north: Jinhae and Busan in late March, Gyeongju just after, Seoul in early April. Our 10-day South Korea itinerary can be shifted to match. Before you fly, check if you need a K-ETA for your passport.
