Sinulog 2027's grand parade is on Sunday 17 January in Cebu City, the third Sunday of January, and Kalibo's Ati-Atihan reaches its peak the same weekend. You cannot see both main days, so pick one: Sinulog for scale and a big-city base, Ati-Atihan for a street party you join rather than watch, and an easy add-on to Boracay. Both honour the Santo Niño (the Child Jesus) and both fill every room in town, so book early. We were in the Philippines from 8 November to 7 December 2022, ending with 7 days in Moalboal and a night in Cebu City; we were not there in January. The dates below follow the fixed third-Sunday rule and the 2026 schedule; organisers publish the full 2027 programme in December.
• Sinulog grand parade: Sunday 17 January 2027, Cebu City. The Fiesta Señor (feast of the Santo Niño) is the same day.
• Sinulog fluvial procession: Saturday 16 January 2027, on the Mactan Channel, if the 2026 pattern repeats.
• Sinulog novena: the nine days of masses at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño before the feast, starting with the opening procession on the second Thursday of January.
• Ati-Atihan main weekend: Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 January 2027, Kalibo, Aklan, with events through the preceding week.
Sinulog Foundation opened contingent registration for 2027 in October 2026, so the festival is going ahead on the usual schedule. Exact parade start times and routes for 2027 were not published at the time of writing; check the Sinulog Foundation and Cebu City government pages in early January.

Sinulog is a religious feast and a dance festival in one. The religious side centres on the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño and Magellan's Cross in downtown Cebu. In 2026 the sequence was:
• Fluvial procession, Saturday: the image of the Santo Niño crossed the Mactan Channel from Lapu-Lapu City on a flotilla of several hundred boats from about 06:30.
• Solemn foot procession, Saturday afternoon: the image was carried through downtown streets from the Basilica, a walk of several hours with huge crowds of devotees carrying candles.
• Grand parade, Sunday: opened with a mass at about 08:00, then contingents danced the parade route to the performance area at the Cebu City Sports Center, with dance competitions running into the evening.
The parade is long, hot and crowded. Grandstand and sports-centre seats are sold by the organisers; along the route you stand. If you want to see the dancing without the crush, watch the contingents warm up early in the morning, or go to the sports-centre performances where you have a seat.
Water pistols, paint on faces and street parties are part of the Sunday afternoon and evening in the city centre. Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket or zipped bag: crowds this size bring pickpockets.
Ati-Atihan, in Kalibo on Panay island, is older than Sinulog and looser. Participants paint their faces black and dress in tribal costumes in honour of the Ati, the island's Indigenous people, and dance through the streets to drums. The cry is Hala bira! and visitors are expected to join in, not stand back.
The format in recent years has been a dawn procession, the tribe and pilgrims' blessings and a vespers mass over the weekend, with the big religious procession and the parade of tribes on the Sunday and Monday. Kalibo's municipality publishes the official programme in December; the 2026 day-by-day programme was not available online when checked.
Expect deafening drums from early morning to late night in the town centre for several days. It is a party: wear clothes you do not mind ruining, because soot and paint get on everyone.

Cebu: Mactan-Cebu International Airport has international flights from across Asia and domestic flights from Manila, Palawan and Mindanao. Fly in by Thursday 14 January; seats for Friday and Saturday are the dearest. Rooms in downtown Cebu City and around Fuente Osmeña book out months ahead for the Sinulog weekend. Staying on Mactan or in the IT Park area is easier to find, but roads into downtown are closed or jammed on Sunday, so plan to walk the last stretch.
Kalibo: Kalibo International Airport is a few kilometres from the town centre and has domestic flights and some international routes. Rooms in Kalibo itself are few, so many visitors base themselves in Boracay and come for the day: the drive from Caticlan jetty to Kalibo takes about 1.5 to 2 hours by van. Grab does not operate in Kalibo; tricycles are the local transport.
Every arrival needs the free eTravel registration within 72 hours of the flight; see our eTravel guide and Philippines visa rules.
• Choose Sinulog if you want the big show, a city with good hotels and flights, and an easy link to Moalboal, Oslob or Bohol after the weekend. We spent 7 days in Moalboal and 4 in Oslob on our route, roughly 3 to 4 hours by road from Cebu City, and both are calm after the festival crowds.
• Choose Ati-Atihan if you want to dance in the street rather than watch, and want a beach week on Boracay attached.
• Do both festivals in one trip: you cannot see both main Sundays. You could, however, join Ati-Atihan events earlier in the week in Kalibo and fly to Cebu for Sunday, or see Sinulog and then go to Iloilo's Dinagyang, which takes place later in January.
January is in the dry season for most of the Visayas, with warm days around 30°C (86°F) and passing showers. Month-by-month detail is in best time to visit the Philippines, and our 4-week Philippines route shows how Palawan and Cebu connect.

The grand parade is on Sunday 17 January 2027, the third Sunday of January, in Cebu City. The fluvial procession is usually on the Saturday before, 16 January.
Its main weekend is 16 and 17 January 2027 in Kalibo, Aklan, with events through the week before. Kalibo publishes the full programme in December.
Not both main Sundays, since they fall on the same weekend. You can join Ati-Atihan events earlier in the week in Kalibo and fly to Cebu for the Sinulog Sunday.
About 1.5 to 2 hours by van from the Caticlan jetty, so many visitors stay on Boracay and come to Kalibo for the day.
Months ahead. Rooms in downtown Cebu City book out for the weekend; Mactan and IT Park are easier, but downtown roads are closed or jammed on the Sunday.
