How much does a trip to England cost?

By · Published

A 12-day trip to England costs roughly $1,700 to $2,500 per person on a budget and $3,600 to $5,050 mid-range, including a return flight from the US. On the ground that is about $90 to $140 a day on a budget and $250 to $350 mid-range, the bands in our daily travel budget by country. England is the most expensive country on our 20-country route to spend a day in, and the flight from the US is one of the cheapest. We spent about 19 days in England in November and December 2023: London for 8 days, Bath for 3, then Swindon, Leamington Spa, Castleton in the Peak District, Shrewsbury and Rowberrow. The figures below are typical 2026 prices, not what we spent.

England trip cost at a glance (12 days, per person)

The totals assume 12 days: London for six, then Bath and the Cotswolds or the Peak District. Rate used: about £0.75 to the US dollar, or $1.34 per pound, from our October 2026 snapshot.

• Budget: about $1,080 to $1,680 on the ground, plus the flight. Dorm beds, supermarket meal deals, free museums and capped transport.

• Mid-range: about $3,000 to $4,200 on the ground, plus the flight. Hotel rooms shared between two, pub dinners, paid castle and cathedral entries and some rail travel.

• Comfort: above $350 a day. Central London hotels alone can take most of that.

Rooms are the largest line and London is the steepest, so spending half your time outside the capital cuts the total more than any other choice.

Flights and the ETA

England is cheap to reach from North America. Our October 2026 fare snapshot, which leans low because it uses real fares travellers found, shows US returns at about $630 to $850, averaging near $730, and Canada about $600 to $790. From Australia expect about $1,050 to $1,210. From Europe a flight can cost under $130 return, although rail and ferry compete.

Add the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation for visa-free visitors: GOV.UK lists £20 (≈ $27), about $27, and our guide notes it rose from £16 (≈ $21) on 8 April 2026. It lasts two years; see the UK ETA guide for US citizens. The fee is charged when you apply, not when you travel.

Timing and fares are covered in how far in advance to book international flights. Summer and school holidays are the dearest weeks.

Accommodation: London versus everywhere else

A 2026 hostel guide puts London dorm beds at roughly £18 to £28 (≈ $24–37) in large dorms and £22 to £35 (≈ $29–47) in 4 to 6 bed rooms, about $24 to $47. Private hotel rooms in central London are the mid-range anchor, and the same standard outside the capital, in Bath or Shrewsbury, is usually noticeably cheaper. Our where to stay in London page covers areas.

Our route used London for 8 days, then Bath for 3 and the Peak District village of Castleton for 3. Spreading nights beyond London was how the route stayed varied; for a tight budget, base outside zones 1 and 2 and ride in, or use Bath as the second base. See our England itinerary.

Transport: capping saves money

London's tap-on fares cap daily. In 2026 the Zone 1 to 2 daily cap is £8.90 (≈ $11.9) and the weekly cap is £44.70 (≈ $60), and a bus or tram fare is £1.75 (≈ $2.3) until 31 October 2026, then £1.85 (≈ $2.5) from 1 November. A Heathrow to Zone 1 Elizabeth line single is £15.50 (≈ $21). All of this is in London Oyster vs contactless.

Intercity rail is the opposite: walk-up fares are high and advance fares are cheap, so book trains such as London to Bath weeks ahead and avoid peak-time travel. We could not verify a current advance fare, so check National Rail before budgeting a number. Coaches are cheaper but slower.

For the countryside, a hire car can win for a group of three or four; see day trips from London for places reachable without one.

Food, sights and what is free

Food: a supermarket meal deal and pub lunches keep a day lower; the grocery picture is in what to buy at a grocery store in England. Service charge is sometimes added, see tipping in England.

National museums in London, including the British Museum and the Natural History Museum, are free, with donation boxes suggesting about £5 (≈ $6.7). Paid sights add up: the Tower of London is listed at roughly £37 to £38 (≈ $50–51) for an adult by Historic Royal Palaces pages, and Stonehenge adult tickets are reported at around £22 to £27 (≈ $29–36) depending on date and source, so check the English Heritage booking page for the exact price.

Pick two or three paid sights for a 12-day trip and fill the rest with free ones: parks, cathedrals with donation entry, markets and walks.

How to bring the total down

• Travel in winter or shoulder months; room rates drop outside July and August, and December markets are good value, see England in December.

• Skip hire in London. Public transport is capped.

• Book rail early and leave off-peak.

• Spend nights in Bath, Shrewsbury or the Peak District rather than all in zone 1.

• Use the free museums and carry a refillable bottle.
