Transit & logisticsBy Clever Tourists · Published
Flying is fastest: about 1 hour 15 minutes from Hanoi's Noi Bai to Hue's Phu Bai airport, roughly 15 km from the city. The overnight sleeper train is the best for most people: the SE3 takes about 12 hours 30 minutes, leaving Hanoi around 19:20, with a 4-berth soft sleeper from roughly ₫890,000 (≈ $34) (about US$35) in 2026. The sleeper bus is cheapest, about 12 to 15 hours from roughly ₫250,000 to ₫550,000 (≈ $9.7–21) (US$10 to US$22), but it is the least comfortable. Hanoi to Hue is about 650 km, so every ground option is an overnight trip. We were in Hanoi from 20 to 23 April 2023, in Ninh Binh until the 27th, then in Hue from 27 to 29 April before Hoi An.

The Reunification Express run by Vietnam Railways (VNR) leaves from Hanoi Station (Ga Hà Nội) on Le Duan street, about 1.5 km south-west of Hoan Kiem Lake, and arrives at Hue Station on Le Loi street, on the south bank of the Perfume River and a short taxi ride from the hotels around Pham Ngu Lao.
A timetable checked in October 2026 lists three overnight services: SE3 at 19:20 arriving 07:50 (about 12 hours 30 minutes), SE19 at 19:45 (about 13 hours) and SE1 at 21:45 (about 12 hours 40 minutes). Departure times shift slightly with each new timetable, so confirm on the official site, dsvn.vn, before you plan around a specific train.
The same source gives about ₫890,000 (≈ $34) (US$35) for a soft sleeper berth on the SE3 and ₫910,000 (≈ $35) (US$36) on the SE1. Lower berths cost more than upper ones in the 4-berth cabins, and the 6-berth hard sleeper is cheaper. Some carriages, notably on the SE19, are run by private companies such as Lotus Train and Laman Express, which sell their own 'VIP' 4-berth cabins at roughly US$68 to US$85 through their sites and agents; the beds are similar, the extras (snacks, fresh linen, quieter cabins) are what you pay for.
Book on dsvn.vn or through an agent such as 12Go or Baolau, which charge a booking fee. Lower berths sell out first around weekends and Vietnamese holidays; a week ahead is usually enough outside Tet. Our Reunification Express guide covers cabin classes and what to bring.

Flights take about 1 hour 15 minutes. Vietnam Airlines and VietJet Air fly the route; both sell on their own sites and apps. Noi Bai is about 45 minutes to an hour from the Old Quarter by taxi or Grab, and you need to be there an hour or more before a domestic departure, so allow about 4 hours door to door.
Phu Bai airport is about 15 km south of central Hue, a 20 to 30 minute ride. A taxi costs roughly ₫200,000 to ₫300,000 (≈ $7.8–11.6). Fares vary a lot with timing, so compare the two airlines for your dates; if you are short of time, the flight saves a full night.
Sleeper buses take about 12 to 15 hours. Companies include The Sinh Tourist, Camel Travel and several limousine-cabin operators sold through 12Go and Vexere. Standard berths run roughly ₫250,000 to ₫550,000 (≈ $9.7–21) (US$10 to US$22) in 2026, and VIP cabin buses up to about ₫900,000 (≈ $35).
Most leave Hanoi in the early evening, many with an Old Quarter pickup, and arrive in Hue very early, often before 6 am, which leaves you waiting for check-in. Berths are short for anyone over about 1.80 m, shoes come off at the door and bags go underneath. Prices rise around Tet and public holidays, see our Tet 2027 guide.

The trains and most buses stop at Ninh Binh, about 2 hours south of Hanoi, so you can spend a few days among the karsts and then board the night train to Hue there instead of in Hanoi. That is what our route did: Hanoi, then 4 nights in Ninh Binh, then Hue. Our Hanoi to Ninh Binh guide has the train times from Hanoi.
• Bring your passport: it is checked against the train ticket.
• Carry cash for the trolley food on trains and for the bus's roadside stops; card is not reliable on board.
• At Hue Station, use Grab or a metered taxi rather than drivers who approach on the platform.
• Arriving in the morning works well: leave bags at your hotel and start with the Imperial City.
From Hue, the classic next leg is over the Hai Van Pass to Hoi An, see Hue to Hoi An. For planning the whole country, see our Hue guide, Hanoi in 3 days and the 4-week Vietnam route.

About 12.5 to 13 hours. The SE3 leaves around 19:20 and arrives around 07:50; the SE1 and SE19 take slightly longer.
About ₫890,000 to ₫910,000 (≈ $34–35) (US$35 to US$36) for a 4-berth soft sleeper in 2026, and roughly US$68 to US$85 in a private 'VIP' carriage.
Fly if you are short of time: about 1 hour 15 minutes in the air. Take the sleeper train if you want to save a hotel night and a half-day of airport transfers.
About 12 to 15 hours on an overnight sleeper bus, from roughly ₫250,000 to ₫550,000 (≈ $9.7–21) for a standard berth.
