Not every stop on a road trip needs to be a destination in itself. Congas is a bend in the road through Spain's Asturian foothills, built around a single striking scene, an ivy-covered stone bridge over impossibly clear water, worth a short detour on the way toward the Picos de Europa.

A quiet riverside stop in the Asturian foothills, built entirely around a single ivy-clad stone arch bridge over a clear green river — a brief detour rather than a destination in its own right.
Congas is little more than a bend in the road on the way toward the Picos de Europa, but it holds one striking scene: an ancient, multi-arched stone bridge, its stonework softened by centuries of ivy, spanning a river running clear green-blue over a bed of smooth, rounded stones. A hillside settlement is visible in the distance, and dense trees and rocky terrain crowd the banks on both sides.

There's no real town center to speak of here — just the bridge, the river, and a scattering of old stone buildings nearby. It's the kind of place worth a short stop for the light on the water and the texture of the old stonework, on the way between the coast and the mountains.
When to go: Midday in late spring through summer, when the sun is high enough to light the riverbed and turn the water a vivid blue-green.
Where to stay: Not a base for an overnight stay — pair it with a night in Gijón or push on toward the Picos de Europa instead.
What to eat: Not really a food stop — grab fabada asturiana or a bottle of local sidra in Cangas de Onís or Gijón before or after.
Tip: Shoot the bridge from river level to get the ivy-covered arches reflected in the still water, rather than from the road above.
