Add each train ride and the day you take it. The calculator prices the route in single tickets, then tries the 7, 14 and 21-day JR Pass and the regional passes over every possible start day and shows which one comes out cheapest.

Adult, regular-season reserved fares, one way. JR Pass at the official-site price (overseas agencies charge ¥53,000 for 7 days). Pass totals include single tickets for rides outside the pass window. Prices checked 2026-10-27.
Single tickets are priced on the fastest train for each ride, usually the Nozomi, as base fare plus a reserved seat in regular season. A pass is only valid for consecutive days, so the calculator slides it across your trip and keeps the window that saves the most. Rides outside that window are still paid as singles.
The break-even line is simple: a 7-day pass needs ¥50,000 of JR rides inside one week, a 14-day pass ¥80,000 inside two. A Tokyo to Kyoto ride is ¥14,170, so one round trip covers well under two-thirds of a 7-day pass.
The JR Pass covers the Hikari and Sakura but not the Nozomi and Mizuho, the fastest trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen. To ride them you buy a Nozomi ticket in Japan: ¥4,960 from Tokyo to Kyoto or Shin-Osaka and ¥6,500 to Hiroshima. Tick the Nozomi box and the calculator adds those tickets to the pass totals. Two Tokyo legs add ¥9,920, which is often enough to flip the verdict back to singles.
City subways, the Odakyu line to Hakone, Kintetsu trains to Nara and highway buses through the Alps are not JR and are not in any pass here. Local JR hops, the Haruka from Kansai Airport and the JR ferry to Miyajima are left out too; they add a few thousand yen in the pass's favour. Peak-season reserved seats cost ¥200 to ¥400 more per ride.
For three sample weeks priced both ways, see is the JR Pass worth it in 2026. For two and three-week trips and the north, read the 14-day, 21-day and JR EAST PASS guide. For booking seats and luggage rules, our Shinkansen tickets guide covers the rest.
Only if you ride about ¥50,000 of JR trains inside 7 days. A Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and back trip costs about ¥28,900 in single tickets, so it loses. Add Hiroshima to the same week and singles reach about ¥51,800, just over the pass price.
On the official JAPAN RAIL PASS site, ¥50,000 for 7 days, ¥80,000 for 14 and ¥100,000 for 21 (ordinary car). Through an overseas agency it is ¥53,000, ¥84,000 and ¥105,000. Green Car passes are ¥70,000, ¥110,000 and ¥140,000.
Yes, with a special Nozomi ticket bought in Japan: ¥4,960 one way from Tokyo or Shinagawa to Kyoto or Shin-Osaka, ¥6,500 to Hiroshima and ¥4,960 from Nagoya to Hiroshima. The Hikari and Sakura are included at no extra cost.
¥14,170 one way on the Nozomi with a reserved seat in regular season, or ¥13,850 on the Hikari. Tokyo to Shin-Osaka is ¥14,720 and Tokyo to Hiroshima ¥19,760.
In western Japan, the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass (¥17,000 for 5 days) pays off on one Osaka to Hiroshima return. In the north, the JR EAST PASS costs ¥35,000 for 5 days. For Tokyo to Kyoto via Kanazawa, the Hokuriku Arch Pass is ¥35,000 for 7 days.
