**Stay in Namba or Shinsaibashi if Osaka is about food and evenings; stay in Umeda if it is about trains.** Namba puts Dotonbori, Kuromon Market and the Nankai trains to Kansai Airport on foot, and it is where most first-time visitors are happiest. Umeda, around Osaka Station, is the better hub for Kyoto, Kobe, Nara day trips and the Shinkansen one stop away at Shin-Osaka. The two are about 8 minutes apart on the Midosuji subway line, so you cannot go badly wrong. We spent 3 days in Osaka in April 2023, after 2 nights in Nara and before Kobe and Himeji.

## Quick pick by traveler type

• **First visit:** Namba or Shinsaibashi, close to Dotonbori but a street or two away from the canal.

• **Nightlife and street food:** Namba. Dotonbori, Hozenji Yokocho and Ura-Namba's small bars.

• **Day trips and transit:** Umeda (Osaka Station) for JR, Hankyu and Hanshin lines, or Shin-Osaka for the Shinkansen.

• **Families and Universal Studios Japan:** the Universal City hotels by the park, or Umeda with a direct JR ride.

• **Budget:** Tennoji and Shinsekai, or the streets south of Namba.

• **Quiet:** Kitahama and Nakanoshima, the riverside business district between Umeda and Namba.

## Namba and Shinsaibashi: the best base for most visitors

**What it's like:** Osaka's entertainment south, the Minami district. Dotonbori's neon canal with the Glico running man, the moss-covered Fudo Myo-o statue in Hozenji Yokocho, the covered Shinsaibashi-suji shopping arcade, and Kuromon Ichiba market a short walk east. Our [Osaka guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/osaka) recommends basing here to be steps from the evening food.

**Who it suits:** food-first travelers and anyone flying in or out of Kansai Airport: the Nankai rapi:t runs from Namba to the airport in about 35 to 40 minutes. Kintetsu trains to Nara leave from Osaka-Namba in about 40 minutes.

**Downside:** the blocks right on the canal are crowded and loud until late, and rooms there cost more. Look one or two streets back, or north toward Shinsaibashi or Nagahoribashi, for calmer nights at the same walking distance.

## Umeda and Osaka Station: the transit base

**What it's like:** Osaka's northern hub, the Kita district, with high-rise hotels, department stores and the Umeda Sky Building's open-air Floating Garden. JR, Hankyu, Hanshin and the Midosuji subway all meet here, and the Haruka from Kansai Airport stops at Osaka Station.

**Who it suits:** anyone using Osaka as a base for Kyoto, Kobe or Himeji. The JR Special Rapid reaches Kyoto in about 30 minutes, the Hankyu line runs from Osaka-Umeda to Kyoto-Kawaramachi in about 45 minutes, and the JR Special Rapid reaches Kobe's Sannomiya in about 22 minutes and Himeji in about an hour.

**Downside:** the underground passages between stations are confusing, and evenings feel more like a business district than Namba. Check how many minutes your hotel is from the line you need, not just from Umeda.

## Shin-Osaka: for a night between trains

**What it's like:** the Shinkansen station north of the river, surrounded by business hotels. Osaka Station is one stop and a few minutes away on JR, and the Midosuji line runs straight down to Umeda and Namba.

**Who it suits:** travelers with an early Shinkansen toward Hiroshima or Tokyo. If you are making the Hiroshima day trip, the Nozomi from here takes about 1 hour 30 minutes; see our [Hiroshima and Miyajima day trip guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/hiroshima-miyajima-day-trip-from-osaka-kyoto-guide).

**Downside:** almost nothing to do in the evening. It is a practical one-night stop, not a base for 3 days.

## Tennoji and Shinsekai: the budget south

**What it's like:** the retro Shinsekai district under Tsutenkaku tower, with kushikatsu counters and old arcades, next to Tennoji Park and the Abeno Harukas skyscraper. Tennoji is a stop on the Haruka and on the JR loop line.

**Who it suits:** budget travelers and anyone who wants cheaper rooms with a direct train to Kansai Airport and Nara.

**Downside:** some streets south of Shinsekai are rougher and quieter at night than the rest of central Osaka. Look at the exact location before booking the cheapest room you see, and prefer blocks near Tennoji station.

## Universal City and the Bay Area: for USJ days

**What it's like:** a cluster of hotels beside Universal Studios Japan on the bay, reached by JR from Osaka Station with a change at Nishikujo.

**Who it suits:** families spending one or two days at the park, who want to walk to the gate at opening. Our [Universal Studios Japan Express Pass guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/universal-studios-japan-express-pass-worth-it-guide) covers whether to pay for shorter queues.

**Downside:** it is cut off from the rest of the city. For a trip that is only partly about the park, Umeda is a better compromise.

## Booking advice: airport, seasons and rooms

**Match the base to your airport train.** Namba is on the Nankai line to Kansai Airport; Umeda, Shin-Osaka and Tennoji are on the Haruka. Our [Kansai Airport transfer guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/kansai-airport-to-kyoto-haruka-icoca-bus-guide) covers the Haruka tickets for visitors.

**Seasons.** Cherry blossom in late March and early April, Golden Week, and the late-July Tenjin Matsuri raise prices. Osaka is often cheaper than Kyoto on the same dates, which is why some people base here and day-trip to Kyoto, though early mornings at Kyoto's temples are hard from Osaka.

**Tax and rooms.** Osaka Prefecture charges its own accommodation tax, lower than Kyoto's, usually collected at the property. Business-hotel rooms are small; check the size if you travel with large cases.

## How many nights in Osaka

Plan **2 to 3 nights**: Dotonbori and Kuromon on one day, Osaka Castle, Shinsekai and the Umeda view on another, and a third for Universal Studios, Kobe or Nara. Our [how many days in Osaka](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-many-days-in-osaka) guide has the detail, and our [Osaka food guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/what-to-eat-in-osaka) covers takoyaki, okonomiyaki and kushikatsu by district.

On a Kansai trip, a common split is Kyoto first, then Osaka for the last nights before Kansai Airport. Compare with [where to stay in Kyoto](https://clevertourists.com/resources/where-to-stay-in-kyoto) if you are deciding between the two.
