**The 2027 World Aquatics Championships run from 26 June to 18 July 2027 in Budapest, with swimming and water polo at the MVM Dome in the south-east (District IX) and diving and artistic swimming at the Duna Arena on the Danube in the north (District XIII), according to World Aquatics. Both venues sit near the M3 metro line, so the smart base is anywhere along it: Districts V and VIII in the middle give you both venues and the city.** The booking dates below are the last four nights of the pool swimming (15 to 18 July), the most-demanded stretch; move them to match your sport. We spent 5 days in Budapest in October 2022, outside any championships, so the venue logistics come from World Aquatics and BKK, the city transport authority.

## Dates and venues: which sport is where

World Aquatics' published schedule for **Budapest 2027 (26 June to 18 July)**:

• **Water polo:** 26 June to 9 July, MVM Dome

• **Diving:** 26 June to 4 July, Duna Arena

• **Open water swimming:** 3 to 8 July, venue to be confirmed

• **High diving:** 8 to 11 July, venue to be confirmed

• **Artistic swimming:** 10 to 17 July, Duna Arena

• **Swimming (pool):** 10 to 18 July, MVM Dome

The **World Aquatics Masters Championships** follow in the same city and overlap the main event: artistic swimming 26 to 30 June, open water 29 to 30 June, swimming 3 to 9 July, diving 5 to 10 July and water polo 11 to 17 July. That overlap matters for beds: thousands of masters competitors and their families are in town at the same time.

The **MVM Dome** is Budapest's largest indoor arena, holding about 10,000 for the championships with a competition pool inside and a training pool just outside, according to World Aquatics. The **Duna Arena** was built for the 2017 championships. Budapest is the first city to host the World Aquatics Championships three times (2017, 2022 and 2027). The open water and high diving venues had not been announced when we checked; in past editions these were outside the two arenas, so do not book around them yet.

## Getting to the MVM Dome and the Duna Arena

**MVM Dome (Üllői út 133-135, District IX).** The venue's own directions give **metro M3 to Népliget** and **trams 1 and 1A to Népliget**. A route planner puts Deák Ferenc tér to Népliget at about 16 minutes on the M3, then a short walk. Népliget is also Budapest's international coach station, which is useful if you are arriving by bus from Vienna or elsewhere.

**Duna Arena (Népfürdő utca, District XIII).** At the 2022 championships, BKK recommended the **number 1 tram** and the **M3 metro** for the Duna Arena; the nearest M3 stop is Göncz Árpád városközpont, a walk from the riverside arena.

The useful pattern: **the M3 line runs north to south through the centre and serves both venues**, and **tram 1** runs a ring that also reaches both. Stay near either and you can switch sports without a long journey. Check BKK service notices before you travel; M3 works and replacement buses have affected parts of the line in recent years.

From the airport, the 100E bus runs to Deák Ferenc tér, where you join the M3; our [airport-to-city guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/budapest-airport-to-city-center-100e-bus-taxi-guide) has the fares and times.

## Where to stay, ranked by travel time to the venues

**1. District IX (Ferencváros), for the MVM Dome.** The venue is in this district, and the inner part near the Great Market Hall and Ráday utca is pleasant, with restaurants and the M3 running out to Népliget. Right by the arena it is roads and offices. **Price level:** mid-range. **The catch:** if you are also going to diving at the Duna Arena, it is the full length of the M3 away.

**2. District VIII (Józsefváros), for the MVM Dome.** The Palace Quarter around the National Museum and the streets near Corvin-negyed are on or close to the M3, a few stops from Népliget. Good value, more local, with some of the city's best newer restaurants. **Price level:** budget to mid-range. **The catch:** parts further out are scruffy; stay inside the Grand Boulevard (Nagykörút) if you are unsure.

**3. District V (Belváros and Lipótváros), for both.** The centre: Deák Ferenc tér is the M3 interchange, so you are a straight ride to the MVM Dome one way and the Duna Arena the other. Parliament, the Basilica and the river are on your doorstep. **Price level:** mid to high, and highest during the swimming week. **The catch:** this is where every visiting team supporter wants to be.

**4. District XIII (Újlipótváros), for the Duna Arena.** Residential, leafy, along the Danube north of Parliament, with cafés and easy tram and M3 access to the Duna Arena. **Price level:** mid-range, with more apartments than hotels. **The catch:** fewer hotels, and the MVM Dome is the far end of the M3.

**5. District VII (the Jewish Quarter).** The ruin bars and nightlife, central and full of rooms. It is a tram or metro change away from either venue rather than direct. **Price level:** budget to mid-range. **The catch:** noise until late, which is fine on a rest day and not before a 9 a.m. heat.

## When to book and which nights

We have no sourced figures on 2027 hotel prices, so this is general advice. Budapest in July is already peak summer, and the championships add athletes, officials, media, masters competitors and fans for over three weeks. The **pool swimming week (10 to 18 July)** is the most-watched stretch and the one to book first; finals sessions are in the evenings, so you will be out late.

World Aquatics' one-year-to-go announcement on 26 June 2026 did not give a ticket on-sale date or prices, so check the official site before you commit to nights. Book **free-cancellation** now and fix the dates once you have tickets for specific sessions. If you are coming for diving or water polo in the first two weeks, demand is lower and central rooms should be easier.

Budapest is a good city to stretch: add the [thermal baths](https://clevertourists.com/resources/budapest-thermal-baths-szechenyi-vs-rudas-gellert-guide) on a rest day, or a trip out to Eger, which we visited for 3 days after Budapest in October 2022. ## Championship-day logistics

• **Morning heats, evening finals.** Pool events at World Aquatics Championships usually run heats in the morning and semi-finals and finals in the evening, so you travel to the venue twice or kill the afternoon nearby. A central base makes the mid-day trip back easy.

• **Heat.** Budapest in July is hot, and older trams are not all air-conditioned. Carry water and avoid the mid-afternoon if you can.

• **Tickets and transport.** Whether event tickets include BKK travel had not been announced; if not, a [Budapest Card](https://clevertourists.com/resources/budapest-card-worth-it) or a BKK travel card covers metro and trams.

• **Money.** Hungary uses the forint, not the euro; cards work widely. Check [tipping in Budapest](https://clevertourists.com/resources/tipping-in-budapest-hungary-service-charge-guide) for service charges, and [what to eat in Budapest](https://clevertourists.com/resources/what-to-eat-in-budapest) for dinner after the finals.
