**Yes, Spain is easy and good value for solo travel: tapas bars are made for one or two plates at a time, the menú del día lunch is cheap, and city transport is simple.** The main risk is theft by teams of pickpockets, not violence. We spent about two months in Spain from June to August 2022, with Madrid (4 days), Salamanca (2), Oviedo (3), Gijon (2), Bilbao (1), San Sebastian (2), Barcelona (5), Valencia (4), Granada (4), Seville (5) and Cadiz (2). This page covers safety, costs, food and bases.

## How safe is Spain for a solo traveler?

The UK Foreign Office says thieves work in teams and use distraction techniques. Higher-risk spots include airport check-in and baggage collection and car hire desks, and festivals and large concerts. Do not keep all valuables in one place, and carry a copy of your passport photo page. It also warns about fake police who ask to see your wallet; genuine officers ask for ID, not wallets or purses.

Other warnings: use only official taxis, since passengers using unlicensed services can face fines of up to 600 euros; use official exchange offices; and be alert to drink spiking by buying your own drinks. The FCDO says attacks including sexual assaults are rare but do occur, and gives no women-specific section. Save your accommodation location in your map app, and do not go off with people you have just met.

The seasonal risks are heat and wildfires. Summer temperatures are extreme in much of the country, and the FCDO points to AEMET warnings. Our visit was June to August 2022, which is the hottest part of the year in Madrid, Seville and Granada, so walk in the morning and rest in the afternoon. The emergency number is **112**, and the Civil Guard mountain rescue number is 062. ## What solo travel in Spain costs

Our model's typical band for Spain is **US$55 to $80 per person per day on a budget** and **US$120 to $210 at mid-range**, from published 2025 and 2026 cost guides, not what we spent. Those assume a shared room, and in our estimates a room for yourself raises accommodation roughly 1.5 times on a budget and 2 times at mid-range. Summer rooms in Barcelona, San Sebastian and Seville are the biggest driver; the north and inland cities run cheaper, and menú del día lunches are the best food value.

Dorm beds in Barcelona run about 20 to 30 euros a night in published averages. Tipping is modest and rounding up is normal: [tipping in Spain](https://clevertourists.com/resources/tipping-in-spain-restaurants-bars-propina-guide). ## Eating alone in Spain

Tapas and pintxos bars are the easiest solo meal in Europe. You stand or sit at the bar, order one plate and a drink, and pay for what you eat; in San Sebastian and Bilbao, pintxos bars let you graze across several places in an evening. Lunch is the main meal: a menú del día is a fixed-price lunch of starter, main, dessert and a drink, served on weekdays at many bars and restaurants and cheaper than ordering a la carte. Dinner starts late, often after 9 pm, so a solo diner at 7 pm may find the kitchen not yet open. ## Where to base yourself

**Madrid** (4 days) is the best first base: central, with fast trains to Salamanca, Toledo and the north. See [where to stay in Madrid](https://clevertourists.com/resources/where-to-stay-in-madrid) and the [Madrid guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/madrid). **San Sebastian** (2 days) and **Bilbao** are the best solo food cities in the Basque Country: [the Basque Country guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/the-basque-country). **Seville** (5 days) and **Granada** (4 days) are the Andalusian pair: [Seville to Granada by bus or train](https://clevertourists.com/resources/seville-to-granada-bus-train-guide) and [the Andalusia itinerary](https://clevertourists.com/resources/andalusia-itinerary-granada-cordoba-seville-cadiz-by-train).

**Barcelona** (5 days) is the biggest solo draw and the biggest pickpocket target; treat it with the care in the safety section. For Gijon and the Asturian coast (we spent 2 days in Gijon and 1.5 in Poncebos near the Picos de Europa), see the [Gijon guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/gijon). ## Meeting people if you want to

Hostels in Madrid, Barcelona and Seville organise tapas crawls and walking tours, which are the easiest way to meet people. The late dinner hour works in your favour: bars at 10 pm are full, and the bar counter is where solo travelers end up talking to each other.
