**Simbang Gabi is a run of nine Catholic Masses held across the Philippines from 16 to 24 December, either at dawn (the Misa de Gallo, usually 4:00 to 5:30) or the evening before (the "anticipated" Masses, usually 19:00 to 20:00 from 15 to 23 December). Visitors are welcome at any parish; dress modestly, arrive early, and eat bibingka and puto bumbong from the stalls outside afterwards.** Parishes publish their 2026 times in late November or early December, so the times below are the 2025 schedules, which most churches repeat. We spent 2 days in Manila in November 2022 and a night in Cebu City in early December 2022, before Simbang Gabi started, so this guide uses church and news sources rather than our own December memories.

## What Simbang Gabi is

Simbang Gabi (Tagalog for "night Mass") is a novena: nine consecutive Masses leading up to Christmas, held in honour of the Virgin Mary as preparation for the birth of Jesus. The dawn version is called **Misa de Gallo**, the "rooster's Mass", because it was held around 4 or 5 a.m. when the roosters start. In Cebu the series is also called **Misa de Aguinaldo**.

The tradition dates from the Spanish colonial period. The common explanation, repeated in Philstar's 2023 explainer, is that friars scheduled Mass before sunrise so farmers and fishermen could attend before work. Today it is one of the biggest events of the Filipino Christmas season, which starts in September and runs well into January.

• **Dates in 2026:** dawn Masses on 16 to 24 December; anticipated evening Masses on 15 to 23 December. The ninth Mass on the evening of 24 December is the Christmas Eve Mass.

• **The wish:** many Filipinos believe that completing all nine Masses earns a wish. Nobody expects visitors to do all nine; one Mass is enough to see what it is.

• **Evening versus dawn:** the evening Masses are a modern addition for people who work early or commute far. Both count for the novena. The dawn Masses have the atmosphere: dark streets, lit parols (star lanterns), and food smoke outside the church doors.

## Simbang Gabi times in Manila (2025 schedules)

GMA News published this list of Metro Manila schedules on 15 December 2025. Most parishes keep the same times year to year, but check each church's Facebook page in early December 2026.

• **Manila Cathedral, Intramuros:** anticipated Mass at 20:00 from 15 December; dawn Mass at 4:30 from 16 December; Christmas Eve Masses at 18:30 and 20:00 on 24 December.

• **Quiapo Church (Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene):** anticipated Masses at 19:00 and 20:00; dawn Masses at 4:00 and 5:00.

• **Baclaran Church (National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help):** anticipated Mass at 20:00; dawn Masses at 4:00 and 5:30; Christmas Eve at 20:00.

• **Binondo Church:** anticipated Mass at 20:00; dawn Masses at 4:00 and 5:30; Christmas Eve at 20:00 and 21:30.

• **Santo Domingo Church (La Naval shrine), Quezon City:** anticipated Mass at 20:00; dawn Mass at 5:00.

• **EDSA Shrine:** anticipated Mass at 19:30; dawn Mass at 5:30.

• **Las Piñas Bamboo Organ church:** anticipated Mass at 19:00; dawn Mass at 4:30.

**San Agustin Church** in Intramuros, a UNESCO World Heritage church a short walk from the cathedral, also holds Simbang Gabi; the Daily Tribune photographed crowds at its first Mass on 16 December 2025. For a first visit, Manila Cathedral or San Agustin is the easy choice: both are in walled Intramuros, close together, and used to visitors. Quiapo is the most intense, with very large crowds and the busy market streets around Plaza Miranda.

Malls run their own Simbang Gabi Masses too (Megaworld published a schedule for its malls across the country in 2025). They are convenient but miss the point if you want the parish atmosphere.

## Simbang Gabi in Cebu

Cebu is the oldest Catholic city in the Philippines, and the **Basilica Minore del Santo Niño** is its centre. GMA Regional TV reported a packed Pilgrim Center (the basilica's large open-air worship area) for the **4:30 Misa de Gallo on 16 December 2025**. The basilica's own published schedule from an earlier year (2020) listed the evening Simbang Gabi at 19:30 from 15 to 23 December and the dawn Mass at 5:00, so expect a dawn Mass between about 4:30 and 5:00 and an evening Mass around 19:30, and confirm on the basilica's website or Facebook page.

Look out for **bangaw** (pagpamangaw), a Cebuano tradition GMA covered in 2025: a family pulls life-sized figures of the Three Kings on camels to the Misa de Gallo on each of the nine mornings.

The Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral is a few minutes' walk from the basilica and also holds the novena. If you are in Cebu through to January, the city's biggest religious festival, Sinulog, follows in mid-January; dates are in our [Sinulog and Ati-Atihan 2027 guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/sinulog-ati-atihan-2027-cebu-kalibo-dates). ## Bibingka, puto bumbong and the food stalls

The food is half the reason locals talk about Simbang Gabi with such affection. Stalls set up outside most big churches for the nine days and sell to people coming out of Mass.

• **Bibingka:** a rice cake made with coconut milk and cooked in a clay pot lined with banana leaf, with heat from charcoal above and below. It is usually topped with salted egg, cheese and butter, and eaten hot.

• **Puto bumbong:** sticky rice steamed in bamboo tubes, traditionally purple from an heirloom rice called pirurutong (purple yam is sometimes used instead), served with butter or margarine, grated coconut and muscovado sugar.

• **Salabat and tsokolate:** hot ginger tea and thick hot chocolate, the usual drinks with both.

Bring small notes and coins: stalls rarely take cards. Some parishes also hand out food; the Daily Tribune reported free burgers and refreshments after the first Mass at San Agustin in 2025. Our [Philippines food guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/food-philippines) covers the rest of the table, and our [Philippines grocery guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/what-to-buy-at-a-grocery-store-in-the-philippines) lists what to pick up for a hotel-room breakfast.

## Etiquette for visitors

Simbang Gabi is a working Mass, not a show. Anyone can attend, Catholic or not, and nobody will ask. A few things make it go smoothly:

• **Dress:** the Archdiocese of Manila's guidelines on church dress ask women not to wear short skirts, skimpy shorts, sleeveless or spaghetti-strap tops, and men not to wear caps, shorts or basketball jerseys. Long trousers or a knee-length skirt and a top with sleeves are safe everywhere. Our [what to wear at temples and mosques guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/what-to-wear-at-temples-and-mosques) has a general checklist.

• **Arrive early:** 20 to 30 minutes before a dawn Mass at a big church. Crowds spill into courtyards and streets, where you will stand and listen through speakers.

• **Communion:** if you are not Catholic, stay seated or cross your arms over your chest for a blessing. Do not take the host.

• **Photos:** take them before and after, not during the consecration, and never with flash. Do not film people praying close-up.

• **Phones and valuables:** keep them zipped away in the crowd, especially at Quiapo and Baclaran. Our [Philippines safety guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/is-the-philippines-safe-to-visit) has general advice for Manila.

• **Getting there at 4 a.m.:** stay within walking distance or book a ride-hailing car the night before. Traffic is light before dawn but heavy again by 7:00.

## Holidays and closures around Simbang Gabi

Proclamation No. 1006, signed in September 2025, sets the Philippines' 2026 holidays. In December 2026: **8 December** (Immaculate Conception, special non-working day), **24 December** (Christmas Eve, special non-working day), **25 December** (Christmas, regular holiday), **30 December** (Rizal Day, regular holiday) and **31 December** (special non-working day).

Malls and restaurants stay open on most of these days, but offices close and traffic before Christmas is heavy, especially on Fridays and paydays. Domestic flights and ferries fill up from about 20 December as people go home to the provinces. If you want sun as well as Mass, December is the start of the dry season in much of the country; see [best time to visit the Philippines](https://clevertourists.com/resources/best-time-to-visit-philippines).
