**Ramadan 2027 in Indonesia is expected to start on Monday 8 February 2027 and end with Lebaran (Idul Fitri) on Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 March, which are national holidays under the government's joint ministerial decree, with collective leave on 9, 12 and 15 March.** For most of the month, travel works normally: Java's restaurants keep serving but more discreetly by day, and Bali, which is majority Hindu, barely changes. The hard part is the last week, when the mudik exodus fills every train, ferry and flight. In 2027 Bali's Nyepi (8 March) falls in that same week. We were in Bali from 19 May to 6 June 2023 with a night in Banyuwangi on Java's eastern tip, outside Ramadan, so this guide uses Indonesian government and news sources rather than our own experience of the month.

## Ramadan and Lebaran 2027 dates

• **Start of Ramadan (1 Ramadan 1448 H):** expected Monday 8 February 2027. Muhammadiyah, Indonesia's second-largest Muslim organisation, has already fixed 8 February from its astronomical calendar, and the government's estimate based on BMKG data is the same day. The Ministry of Religious Affairs confirms the official start at its *sidang isbat* (determination meeting) the evening before. Nahdlatul Ulama waits for the moon sighting, so the start can differ by a day between groups.

• **Lebaran (Idul Fitri 1448 H):** national holidays on **Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 March 2027**, according to the joint decree of the Ministers of Religious Affairs, Manpower and Administrative Reform signed on 15 September 2026 and published by Indonesia's State Secretariat. Like the start of Ramadan, the exact day of Idul Fitri is confirmed by the Minister of Religious Affairs shortly before.

• **Cuti bersama (collective leave):** Tuesday 9, Friday 12 and Monday 15 March 2027. These are fixed for civil servants and optional for private employers, but many follow them, so effectively much of Indonesia is off from Saturday 6 to Monday 15 March.

• **Other holidays in the same window:** Chinese New Year on Saturday 6 February 2027 (with leave on Friday 5 February), and **Nyepi on Monday 8 March 2027**, when Bali, including its airport, shuts down for 24 hours from 06:00. ## Java during Ramadan: what changes

Java is overwhelmingly Muslim, and Ramadan shapes the day. For visitors it is less restrictive than many expect.

• **Daytime eating:** non-Muslims are not required to fast, and restaurants in cities like Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Malang stay open. Many hang a curtain or cover the windows during the day so diners are not visible from the street. Eat inside rather than walking down the street with food or a drink, and avoid eating or smoking in front of people who are fasting, especially drivers and guides.

• **Late afternoon:** the hours before sunset are when Java comes alive. Street stalls selling *takjil* (snacks for breaking the fast) appear along main roads, and the evening meal, *buka puasa*, is a social event. Restaurants fill quickly at sunset; book or arrive early.

• **Before dawn:** *sahur*, the pre-dawn meal, means some neighbourhoods are awake and noisy around 3:00 to 4:00, and mosque loudspeakers carry. Bring earplugs.

• **Nightlife:** Jakarta's government orders nightclubs, discos, saunas, massage parlours and bars to close from the day before Ramadan until two days after Idul Fitri; in 2026, venues inside four- and five-star hotels or designated commercial zones could stay open if they were not next to homes, mosques, schools or hospitals. Other Javanese cities have their own local rules, and alcohol is harder to find for the month.

• **Working hours:** offices often close earlier, and service can be slower in the afternoon, when people are tired and hungry. Plan important errands for the morning.

• **Sights:** check opening hours before you go. Borobudur and Prambanan are at their busiest in the Lebaran holiday week, when domestic tourists fill Yogyakarta.

Dress more modestly than in Bali: shoulders and knees covered in towns and markets, and a headscarf for women only if entering a mosque. Our [Indonesia etiquette guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/what-is-considered-rude-in-indonesia) covers the rest.

## Bali during Ramadan: mostly normal

Bali is majority Hindu, so Ramadan is not a public event there the way it is in Java. Daytime eating and drinking in public is normal, beach clubs and bars keep their usual hours, and nobody expects you to change anything.

What you will notice: Muslim communities in Bali, and the many Javanese and Lombok workers in hotels, warungs and transport, are fasting. Be considerate with drivers on long day trips and offer a stop at sunset to break the fast. Some Javanese-run warungs (often selling *nasi Padang* or *bakso*) close in the day or open only from late afternoon.

The bigger changes come at the end of the month. Before Lebaran, many Muslim workers in Bali go home to Java or Lombok, so some warungs close for the week and drivers are scarcer. At the same time Indonesian domestic tourists arrive in large numbers for the holiday, and the south coast and Ubud get busy. In 2027, Nyepi on 8 March also falls two days before Lebaran. Our [Lebaran 2027 guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/lebaran-2027-indonesia-bali-mudik-travel-guide) goes through that week day by day.

## Mudik: the travel crush before Lebaran

*Mudik* is the trip home to the family village for Lebaran, and it is the largest movement of people in Indonesia each year. For Lebaran 2026, the Ministry of Transportation's survey projected about **143.9 million** people travelling, roughly half the population, and reported that 2025's actual figure of around 154 million had exceeded its projection. The largest flows run out of West Java and Jakarta into Central and East Java.

• **Trains:** KAI sells long-distance tickets 45 days before departure on the Access by KAI app and booking.kai.id. For Lebaran 2026 sales opened in late January and hundreds of thousands of seats sold within two weeks. For travel around 5 to 9 March 2027, expect sales to open around 19 to 23 January 2027, and buy on the day they open.

• **Roads:** the Trans-Java toll road runs one-way and odd-even schemes on peak days. Private cars were the most common mudik mode in the 2026 survey, so intercity road travel that week is slow.

• **Ferries and flights:** the Ketapang (Banyuwangi) to Gilimanuk crossing between Java and Bali backs up for kilometres, and it stops entirely for Nyepi. Domestic fares on Java routes peak before Eid and again during the return (*arus balik*) in the week after.

Practical rule for 2027: do long overland journeys across Java before about 1 March or after about 20 March. If you are in Java for Lebaran itself, pick one city and stay put; many shops and restaurants close on Eid morning while families go to prayers and visit relatives, though malls and hotel restaurants stay open.

## Planning a Ramadan 2027 trip: Java vs Bali

• **February to early March in Java (about 8 February to 1 March):** a good time to visit Yogyakarta and central Java. Trains are normal, sights are quieter by day, and the evening food markets are at their best. Book a hotel with a restaurant if you want an easy lunch.

• **Bali any time in Ramadan:** little changes until the last week. The weather is the bigger factor: February and March are wet season, with heavy afternoon rain; see [best time to visit Bali](https://clevertourists.com/resources/best-time-to-visit-bali).

• **The week of 6 to 16 March 2027:** avoid moving between islands or across Java. If you must fly, book early and avoid 7, 9 and 16 to 17 March. Stay in Bali or in one Javanese city.

• **Getting in:** arrival paperwork is in our [Indonesia arrival card guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/all-indonesia-arrival-card-how-to-fill-out-guide) and [visa guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/do-i-need-a-visa-to-visit-indonesia-bali).
