Winter in Morocco needs two packing lists: layers for the cities and proper cold-weather clothing for the mountains and desert nights. **Ramadan begins in February 2027**, so late-winter trips also need flexible meal and sightseeing times. We travelled Morocco from **26 August to 19 September 2022**, including Erg Chigaga; this winter guide uses official planning sources, not a claim that we experienced winter or Ramadan there. Information checked on 21 October 2026.

## Choose the region before choosing the month

Morocco’s national tourist office describes a country shaped by Atlantic, Mediterranean, mountain and desert climates. Its winter-sports information includes the Atlas and the Ifrane area. A mild afternoon in Marrakech does not tell you what a high pass or a desert campsite will feel like after sunset.

For a first winter visit, our suggested starting point is a city-based trip: Marrakech with time for the coast, or Fes and Rabat with fewer long road days. Keep the mountain or desert leg optional until you have checked conditions. Our [seven-day Morocco itinerary](https://clevertourists.com/resources/morocco-itinerary-7-days) helps choose stops; shorten the route if winter transfers need more time.

## Marrakech, the coast and the Sahara

Choose accommodation for its winter comfort, not just its courtyard photograph. Ask whether the bedroom has heating, whether hot water is reliable and where breakfast is served. Pack a warm evening layer, a rain shell and closed shoes even if your main plan is wandering the medina.

For a Sahara overnight, ask the camp about bedding and heating, the length of the drive and what happens if the approach road is disrupted. Our [Erg Chigaga versus Merzouga guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/erg-chigaga-vs-merzouga-sahara-desert-trip-from-marrakech-guide) explains the route choice. Our own desert visit was in September; its photographs are not evidence of winter conditions.

We would leave a night back in the departure city before an international flight rather than make the desert return drive the final connection. This is itinerary advice, not an assertion that a particular winter road will close.

## Atlas Mountains: check the route, not just Marrakech’s forecast

The UK Foreign Office warns that mountain roads and secondary routes can be particularly hazardous in poor weather. Check the forecast for the actual pass and destination with your driver or guide before setting off. A sightseeing drive and a winter summit attempt require very different preparation.

For a mountain stay, confirm access, heating and cancellation arrangements. For trekking, discuss conditions and suitable equipment with a qualified local guide. Snow sports promoted by the tourist office do not guarantee snow, open lifts or safe access on your dates.

## Ramadan 2027: plan around February, keep exact dates provisional

The Foreign Office identifies February 2027 as the next Ramadan start. **Exact Moroccan start and end dates are not confirmed here.** Do not treat a calculated calendar date as a Moroccan moon-sighting announcement. Our [Ramadan 2027 guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/visiting-morocco-during-ramadan-2027-guide) gives the provisional window and the practical questions to ask.

Confirm daytime meals with your accommodation, recheck attraction hours and allow extra time for transfers around sunset. Official advice asks visitors to respect local customs during fasting hours and notes that eating, drinking or smoking publicly in the daytime may cause offence. Book a dinner time with your host rather than assuming normal restaurant hours.

If you prefer a trip without Ramadan-related schedule changes, choose December or January. If February is fixed, reduce the number of one-night stops so an altered opening time does not derail the whole itinerary. See [our actual 24-day route](https://clevertourists.com/resources/morocco-itinerary-our-24-day-route-tangier-to-the-sahara) for the places we visited.
