A standalone **Milford Sound** cruise costs **NZ$98 to NZ$180** for an adult on a standard boat, or **NZ$220 to NZ$389+** for premium small-boat and dining options. A coach-and-cruise package runs about **NZ$285 to NZ$330 from Te Anau** and **NZ$319 to NZ$340+ from Queenstown**. The drive is **2 hours each way from Te Anau** and **4 to 4.5 hours each way from Queenstown**, and there is **no fuel station between Te Anau and Milford Sound**.

## What a cruise actually costs

The boat ticket is the only thing you must buy. Prices vary by operator and departure time, and the spread is wider than most people expect:

• **Standard cruise, adult:** NZ$98 to NZ$180 for 1.5 to 2 hours

• **Premium / small boat / dining:** NZ$220 to NZ$389+

• **Coach plus cruise from Te Anau:** about NZ$285 to NZ$330

• **Coach plus cruise from Queenstown:** about NZ$319 to NZ$340+, more for glass-roof coaches or small-group vehicles

Book ahead in summer. This is one of the busiest single attractions in New Zealand, and the mid-morning departures fill first.

## Driving yourself: the honest version

The **Milford Road (State Highway 94)** is one of the great alpine drives — glacier-carved valleys, the Mirror Lakes, the Homer Tunnel, and waterfalls on every rock face after rain. Driving it yourself is worth doing for the road as much as the destination.

Two things make it more demanding than the brochure suggests. First, **there is no fuel between Te Anau and Milford Sound**, so fill up completely in Te Anau before you leave. Second, it is an alpine highway: weather turns fast and the road can close for avalanche risk, especially in winter and spring. Check the NZTA road status before setting out, and carry chains if you are travelling in the colder months.

From **Te Anau** it is about **2 hours each way** without stops, which makes a comfortable day: drive up, cruise, and take the scenic stops on the return. From **Queenstown** it is 4 to 4.5 hours each way, so a same-day return means 9+ hours behind the wheel on winding mountain road. People do it; it is not a good plan.

## What we did, and why

We broke the trip up rather than doing it in one push: three nights in **Te Anau**, a night at **Cascade Creek**, a night in **Milford Sound** itself, then back along the road. That is more time than most itineraries allow, but it means the drive is the experience rather than the commute.

Staying at Milford Sound overnight is the trick worth knowing. Day-trippers arrive in a convoy and leave in one; the sound at 07:00, before the coaches, is a completely different place — still water, cloud sitting on the cliffs, and no one else on the foreshore. The accommodation is limited and not cheap, which is exactly why it works.

Cascade Creek is a DOC campsite on the road, useful as a staging point if you want to reach the sound early without paying for Milford lodging.

## Expect rain, and do not reschedule for it

Milford Sound is one of the wettest places on earth, with rain on well over half the days of the year. This is not bad luck; it is the reason the place looks the way it does. Rain produces the temporary waterfalls that cascade off the cliff faces — the ones in every photograph — and a dry, sunny day is actually the less dramatic version.

Bring a proper waterproof shell rather than an umbrella, and expect sandflies on the shore and at the campsites. They are worse in still, damp conditions and largely absent when there is a breeze.

Also expect kea, the alpine parrots, around the car parks and the tunnel. They are intelligent, curious and entirely capable of stripping the rubber trim off a car. Do not leave food visible, and do not leave a door open.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much is a Milford Sound cruise?

NZ$98 to NZ$180 for a standard adult cruise, with premium small-boat and dining options from NZ$220 to NZ$389 or more.

### Should I drive to Milford Sound or take a coach?

From Te Anau, driving is easy at about 2 hours each way. From Queenstown it is 4 to 4.5 hours each way, so a coach-and-cruise package at around NZ$319-340 is the more sensible option.

### Is there petrol between Te Anau and Milford Sound?

No. There is no fuel station on the Milford Road. Fill up in Te Anau before you leave.

Go anyway. Rain is normal here and creates the temporary waterfalls that make the sound worth seeing. Bring a waterproof shell and expect sandflies in still conditions.
