**Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba** tickets cost **€15 (≈ $16.7)** for general admission, with a reduced **€12 (≈ $13.4)** rate for over-65s, students aged 15 to 26 and European Youth Card holders. Children 10 to 14 pay €8 (≈ $8.9) and under-10s are free. There is also a **free window for individual visitors, 08:30 to 09:30, Monday to Saturday** — no groups allowed, and staff start clearing the building around 09:20 before mass at 09:30.

## Ticket prices and add-ons

• **General admission:** €15 (≈ $16.7)

• **Reduced:** €12 (≈ $13.4) for over-65s, students 15 to 26, European Youth Card holders

• **Children 10 to 14:** €8 (≈ $8.9); under 10 free

• **Bell tower (Torre del Campanario):** separate ticket, €4 (≈ $4.5)

• **Audio guide:** €5 (≈ $5.6) extra

The building is a working cathedral, which is why the pricing and the access rules are more complicated than a museum's. Buy online in peak season; Córdoba's old town is compact and the Mezquita is the single thing everyone comes to see.

## How the free morning hour actually works

This is the most useful piece of information about the Mezquita, and it is widely misreported. **Monday to Saturday, 08:30 to 09:30**, individual visitors may enter free. The rules:

• **Individuals only.** Organised tourist and school groups are not admitted in that window.

• **Be punctual.** Staff begin clearing visitors around **09:20** to prepare for mass.

• **It is a church first.** At **09:30** morning mass begins, and if you stay you are expected to participate respectfully rather than walk around sightseeing.

• **It can be suspended** on days with special religious celebrations.

The free hour is a genuine experience, not a loophole: early morning light through the arches with far fewer people. It is also shorter than it sounds, because the clearing starts ten minutes before the end.

## What you are walking through

The Mezquita is the defining building of Islamic Spain: a forest of double-tiered horseshoe arches in alternating stone and brick, built over successive expansions from the 8th century. Then, in the 16th century, a Renaissance cathedral nave was inserted into the middle of it.

That insertion is the thing to understand before you go. Depending on your view it is either a vandalism or one of the most extraordinary architectural collisions in Europe — a cathedral standing inside a mosque, with the arch forest continuing around it on all sides. Seeing it in person resolves the argument better than reading about it.

Highlights: the **mihrab** and the richly decorated *maksura* around it, the **Patio de los Naranjos** with its orange trees and irrigation channels, and the view from the bell tower if you buy the €4 (≈ $4.5) ticket.

## Córdoba in a day

We had two nights in Córdoba in August 2022, between Granada and Seville, and it was enough for the Mezquita, the Jewish quarter and a slow evening.

Beyond the Mezquita: the **Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos** with its water gardens, the **Roman bridge** over the Guadalquivir, the **Medina Azahara** ruins outside the city, and the patios of the old town — Córdoba's courtyard festival in May is famous for them.

Córdoba is on the high-speed AVE line, which makes it an easy stop between Madrid and Seville rather than a detour. The station is about 1 km from the old town, walkable.

August is punishing. Córdoba regularly records the highest temperatures in Spain, and the middle of the day is not usable. If you are there in summer, do the Mezquita at opening and stay indoors from 14:00.
