Two railways run from Kyoto Station to Nara, and both take under an hour. The **Kintetsu Kyoto Line** costs **¥760** and takes about 45 to 50 minutes on an express, or about 35 minutes on a limited express for roughly ¥520 extra, arriving at **Kintetsu-Nara**, a 5-minute walk from Nara Park. The **JR Nara Line** Miyakoji Rapid takes about 45 minutes for about ¥720 and is covered by the JR Pass, but **JR Nara Station** is about 15 minutes' walk farther from the deer and temples. Without a JR Pass, Kintetsu is the better choice.

## Kintetsu vs JR at a glance

• **Kintetsu Express:** Kintetsu Kyoto Station (inside Kyoto Station, Hachijo side) → Kintetsu-Nara, about 45 to 50 minutes, **¥760**. Some trains need a change at Yamato-Saidaiji; follow the platform signs for Nara.

• **Kintetsu Limited Express:** about 35 minutes direct, **¥760 plus a limited express fee of about ¥520**, reserved seats. Buy the limited express ticket at the machines or counter before boarding.

• **JR Miyakoji Rapid (Nara Line):** JR Kyoto Station → JR Nara, about 45 minutes, about **¥720**. Covered by the JR Pass and the JR Kansai Area Pass. Local trains on the same line take over an hour.

Fares are for one adult one way and were current in 2026; check the operators' fare search or Jorudan before you travel.

## Where each station drops you

**Kintetsu-Nara** is underground at the western edge of the sights. Come up the stairs and you are on Noborioji street with **Kofuku-ji** about 5 minutes' walk away, the first deer just beyond, and **Todai-ji** about 15 to 20 minutes on foot. This is the main reason most travelers take Kintetsu.

**JR Nara** is about 1.5 km west of the park. From there it is roughly a 15- to 20-minute walk along Sanjo-dori to Kofuku-ji and 30 minutes or more to Todai-ji, or a short ride on the city loop bus. The walk passes shops and cafes and is pleasant enough, but it adds up on a long day, especially on the way back.

## IC cards, JR Pass and tickets

**ICOCA, Suica and Pasmo** all work on both Kintetsu and JR for the ordinary fare, so on an express or Miyakoji Rapid you simply tap in and out. A Kintetsu limited express needs a separate limited express ticket in addition to the fare, even if you use an IC card for the base fare.

The **JR Pass** is valid only on JR. If you already have one, the Miyakoji Rapid costs you nothing, and that usually outweighs the longer walk. Kintetsu is not covered by JR passes.

## What to see on a Nara day trip

A realistic day from Kyoto covers the core of Nara Park on foot: **Kofuku-ji** and its five-story pagoda, **Todai-ji** with the Great Buddha Hall (¥800 for adults; open 7:30 to 17:30 from April to October and 8:00 to 17:00 from November to March), then up through the lantern-lined paths to **Kasuga Taisha**. Add **Naramachi**, the old merchant quarter south of Sarusawa Pond, if you have time.

The deer are everywhere between the station and the shrines. Buy the official *shika senbei* crackers only from the licensed vendors, feed them quickly and keep paper maps and bags out of reach; our [Nara deer etiquette and safety guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/nara-deer-park-bowing-etiquette-safety-crackers-guide) explains the bowing trick and how to avoid bites. Leave Kyoto by about 9:00 to reach Todai-ji before the tour buses, and head back by late afternoon. For the Kyoto side of the trip, our [3 days in Kyoto](https://clevertourists.com/guides/3-days-in-kyoto) itinerary shows where a Nara day fits.
