Real **Kobe beef** is expensive but lunch is the way in: value lunch sets start at about **¥7,480 to ¥10,000 (≈ $47–63)** for a 100 to 110 g cut with starter, soup, vegetables and rice. Premium A5 sirloin or fillet courses run **¥15,000 to ¥24,000 (≈ $95–152)+** per person. Book **one to two weeks ahead** for a weekday lunch counter, three to four weeks in peak season. We spent a day in Kobe in April 2023, between Osaka and Himeji, specifically to eat.

## Why lunch is half the price of dinner

Kobe beef restaurants price by the course and the cut, and lunch menus exist to fill seats during the day. The same counter, the same chef and the same beef cost substantially less at 12:00 than at 19:00, because the lunch courses use smaller portions — typically 100 to 110 g rather than 150 g or more.

• **Value lunch sets:** ¥7,480 to ¥10,000 (≈ $47–63), lean cut, starter, soup, grilled vegetables, rice

• **Mid-range sirloin or fillet:** ¥15,000 to ¥24,000 (≈ $95–152)+, A5 grade, multiple courses, garlic rice upgrades and dessert

If you have never had it, the value lunch is the sensible introduction. The difference between a lean Kobe cut and an A5 sirloin is real, but so is the difference between ¥8,000 (≈ $51) and ¥20,000 (≈ $127), and both are unmistakably Kobe beef.

## Booking: do not walk in

Reputable teppanyaki counters seat eight to twelve people. Between **12:00 and 13:30** they are full, and a walk-in party is likely to be turned away rather than seated. Three routes:

• **The restaurant's own site.** Most of the well-known Kobe establishments run an English booking engine where you pick date, time and course.

• **Japanese hospitality platforms.** TableCheck, Savor Japan and byFood are widely used by Kobe restaurants and handle English reservations cleanly.

• **Hotel concierge.** If you are staying in Osaka or Kyoto, your hotel can call. This works well for the smaller counters that do not have an online system.

Book **1 to 2 weeks** ahead for a normal weekday, and **3 to 4 weeks** in cherry blossom season, Golden Week and autumn. We were in Japan during sakura and the popular places were gone well before we arrived.

## How to tell real Kobe beef

Kobe beef is a protected brand: it must come from a Tajima strain steer or heifer, raised in Hyogo prefecture, meeting yield and marbling grades, with a traceable individual identification number.

Authentic restaurants display the **certificate of authenticity** — with the animal's identification number and nose print — before the chef starts cooking. If you are paying Kobe prices and nobody shows you a certificate, ask. A restaurant selling "Kobe-style" or "Wagyu beef steak" at ¥3,000 (≈ $19.0) is selling wagyu, which is a broader category that includes beef from many prefectures and crosses.

This matters most around Sannomiya, where the density of steak restaurants means the branding gets loose. Cheaper places with long queues are usually serving wagyu rather than certified Kobe.

## The meal itself, and the day around it

A teppanyaki counter is a performance: the chef cooks in front of you, course by course, and the beef is typically sliced and served in stages so the fat does not go cold. Expect **60 to 90 minutes**. Dress smart-casual — no beach sandals or gym shorts, and go easy on perfume, which interferes with tasting.

Kobe is an easy day from Osaka (about 25 minutes by train) or a stop between Osaka and Himeji, which is how we did it — Osaka, then Kobe for lunch, then Himeji Castle the same afternoon. Kobe itself is a pleasant port city with a foreign-concession history and the Rokko mountain behind it, but the beef is the reason most visitors come.

If you are travelling on a rail pass, check which trains the pass covers on the Osaka-Kobe corridor; the Shinkansen stops at Shin-Kobe, which is a subway ride from the restaurant district rather than a walk.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does Kobe beef cost in Kobe?

Lunch value sets start around ¥7,480 to ¥10,000 (≈ $47–63) for a 100-110 g cut. Premium A5 sirloin or fillet courses run ¥15,000 to ¥24,000 (≈ $95–152) or more per person.

### Is Kobe beef cheaper at lunch?

Yes, substantially. Lunch courses use smaller portions of the same beef, which is why the same counter costs far less at noon than in the evening.

### How far ahead should you book a Kobe beef restaurant?

One to two weeks for a weekday lunch, three to four weeks in cherry blossom season, Golden Week or autumn. Counters seat only 8-12 people.

### How do you know the Kobe beef is real?

The restaurant should show a certificate of authenticity with the animal's identification number and nose print before cooking. 'Kobe-style' or plain 'wagyu' at low prices is not certified Kobe beef.
