South Korea's temporary K-ETA exemption for US citizens and 21 other nationalities runs until 31 December 2026, and as of this writing (October 2026) no further extension has been announced. Unless that changes, you need an approved K-ETA to fly to Korea visa-free from 1 January 2027. It costs 10,000 won on the official site, k-eta.go.kr, is valid for 3 years, and you should apply at least 72 hours before boarding. Here is who is covered, how the application works, how it interacts with the e-Arrival Card, and how to avoid the copycat sites that charge over $100.

## What changes on 1 January 2027 (and what could still change)

K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) has been the rule for visa-free visitors since September 2021. From 1 April 2023, as part of the Visit Korea Year campaign, Korea temporarily exempted **22 countries and regions**: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Macao, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, the UK and the US (including Guam).

That exemption was first set to end in December 2024, then extended to the end of 2025, then extended again in a Ministry of Justice notice posted on 23 December 2025 to run **1 January to 31 December 2026 (Korean time)**. The notice says nothing about 2027.

So the honest position in October 2026: **the exemption ends on 31 December 2026 unless Korea extends it again.** Both previous extensions were announced in late December, so a last-minute change is possible but not something to plan around. If you arrive on or after 1 January 2027, assume you need a K-ETA and check k-eta.go.kr before booking. Airlines are expected to check K-ETA status at check-in, so a missing one would stop you at the departure airport, not in Seoul.

## K-ETA fee, validity and processing time

• **Fee:** 10,000 won (roughly $7 to $8), paid by card on the official site or app. There are no extra official charges.

• **Validity:** 3 years for applications made since 3 July 2023 (it was 2 years before that), for multiple visa-free trips (up to 90 days each for US citizens). It is linked to the passport you applied with, so a new passport means a new application.

• **Processing:** results usually arrive within 72 hours by email or on the site, but Korean embassies have warned it can take longer at busy times. Apply **at least 72 hours before boarding**, and a week ahead in December and January when the exemption ending will push volumes up.

Korean embassy guidance also lists who doesn't need one: holders of a valid Korean visa, transfer passengers who don't enter Korea, and travelers **aged 17 and under or 65 and over**.

## How to apply, step by step

Use **www.k-eta.go.kr** or the official **K-ETA app**. You can apply as a member or non-member; the result and validity are the same.

• Scan or upload your passport photo page and enter your details exactly as printed.

• Upload a recent facial photo (plain background).

• Enter your email, travel purpose, where you will stay in Korea and your job details. Use your first hotel's address.

• Pay the 10,000 won fee and keep the confirmation.

One person can apply for a group of up to 30 people, which helps for families. Each traveler still gets their own authorization. If a K-ETA is refused, the route forward is a visa application through a Korean embassy or consulate, so don't leave this until the week you fly.

During the exemption, scanning a covered passport triggers a "K-ETA exemption" pop-up. If you see that pop-up for a 2026 arrival, you don't need to apply, though you can choose to.

## K-ETA and the e-Arrival Card

Korea replaced paper arrival cards with the free **e-Arrival Card** (e-arrivalcard.go.kr), launched on 24 February 2025 and filed online within the 3 days before you arrive. Travel reports say paper cards were phased out from January 2026.

**An approved K-ETA exempts you from the arrival card**, because K-ETA already collects the same information. That is the one practical perk of applying during the exemption year. While you are K-ETA-exempt in 2026 you file the free e-Arrival Card instead; from 2027, if the exemption lapses, the K-ETA replaces it.

Our [South Korea visa guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/do-i-need-a-visa-to-visit-south-korea) covers the 90-day visa-free stay and what to do if your trip is for anything other than tourism or short business.

## K-ETA scam sites

Look-alike sites with names such as "Korea ETA online" buy search ads and charge well over the real fee. Korean embassies have warned that some charge more than **$100** for what costs 10,000 won on the official site.

The only official channels are **k-eta.go.kr** and the official K-ETA mobile app. Type the address yourself rather than clicking an ad. If you already paid an agency, log in to k-eta.go.kr with your passport details to check whether an application actually exists in your name.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does the K-ETA cost?

10,000 won (roughly $7 to $8) on the official site, k-eta.go.kr, or the official app. Sites charging much more are agencies or scams.

### How long is a K-ETA valid?

3 years for applications made since 3 July 2023, for multiple visa-free visits, as long as you use the same passport.

### How far in advance should I apply for a K-ETA?
