Jeju's headline sights cluster on the **east** side of the island: **Seongsan Ilchulbong** (5,000 won, opening before dawn in summer for the sunrise), the **Manjanggul** lava tube (reopened on **May 30, 2026** after a rockfall closure), and the ferry to **Udo**. The south coast around Seogwipo has the waterfalls and the best Olle trail sections, and **Hallasan**, Korea's highest peak, needs a free online reservation if you want the summit. Group your days by side of the island and you'll spend far less time in transit.

## Seongsan Ilchulbong: tickets, sunrise hours and the haenyeo show

**Seongsan Ilchulbong** ("Sunrise Peak") is a tuff cone that rose from the sea about 5,000 years ago, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. A stepped path climbs to the crater rim in about **20 to 30 minutes**. Adult admission is **5,000 won** (2,500 won for youth and children).

Opening hours follow the season rather than the exact sunrise. Recent 2026 listings put opening at about **4:30 or 5am in summer** and about **6am in winter**, with last tickets an hour before closing, and the site **closes on the first Monday of each month**. Hours have been revised more than once, so check the official listing the night before a sunrise climb.

The free coastal path at the base leads down to a small beach where Jeju's **haenyeo** (women free divers) give a short demonstration, usually in the early afternoon (recent listings say around 2pm, older ones 1:30 and 3pm); it's cancelled in rough weather. You don't need a summit ticket to watch.

## Udo, Manjanggul and the rest of the east

Ferries to **Udo** leave from Seongsan Port, a short walk from the peak, and take about **15 minutes**. Round-trip adult fares are around **10,000 to 11,000 won** including the island's marine park fee, and you fill in a passenger form and show ID (bring your passport). Ferries run about every 30 minutes in good weather, with the last boat back in the late afternoon in winter, later in summer. Rental cars are restricted on Udo, so hire an e-bike or scooter at the port or ride the island bus.

**Manjanggul**, a lava tube about 7.4 km long, reopened on **May 30, 2026** after closing in late 2023 because of a rockfall. Only around **1 km** is open, with new viewing decks and low-level LED lighting. Reported hours and the monthly closing day vary between sources, so check before you go; the cave stays around 11 to 21°C year-round, so take a layer in summer.

Nearby east-coast stops include **Woljeong-ri** beach, **Hamdeok** beach and **Gimnyeong**, all on the coast road between Jeju City and Seongsan.

## Hallasan: summit reservations and which trail to take

Hallasan (1,947 m) has two trails to the summit crater, **Seongpanak** and **Gwaneumsa**, and both require a **free advance reservation** on the official Hallasan National Park reservation site (visithalla.jeju.go.kr), which has an English version. Daily slots are capped and book out for autumn foliage weekends and spring. Bring the ID you booked with and your QR code; no-shows without cancelling are barred from booking for a period.

Each summit trail has a **checkpoint cutoff** around midday, and if you pass it late you're turned back, so start by about 6 to 7am. Allow 8 to 9 hours for the round trip on Seongpanak, the gentler and longer route. The shorter **Yeongsil** and **Eorimok** trails need no reservation and reach the Witse Oreum shelter with views of the summit wall, a good half-day option. Trails close in heavy rain, snow or high winds.

## Seogwipo and the south coast: waterfalls and Olle trails

**Seogwipo** has three waterfalls within a short taxi ride: **Jeongbang**, one of the few waterfalls in Asia that drops straight into the sea; **Cheonjiyeon**, at the end of a short gorge walk and open into the evening; and **Cheonjeyeon**, a three-tier fall in Jungmun. Each charges a small entry fee of a few thousand won.

The **Jeju Olle** network covers the island's coast in about two dozen numbered routes, most of them 10 to 20 km. Route **7**, west of Seogwipo past **Oedolgae** rock and the volcanic sea cliffs, is the most popular, and Route **6** links the harbor and the waterfalls; both are easy to walk in sections and pick up a bus back. Olle markers are blue and orange ribbons and arrows.

West of Jungmun are the **Jusangjeolli** basalt columns, and the southwest has Sanbangsan and Songaksan, where the Olle path runs along cliffs facing Hyeongjeseom.

## East vs west: how to plan your days

• **East day**: Seongsan Ilchulbong at sunrise, the haenyeo show, Udo in the late morning, Manjanggul or Woljeong-ri on the way back. Base yourself in Seongsan or Jeju City.

• **South day**: Seogwipo's waterfalls, Olle Route 7 to Oedolgae and Jusangjeolli. Base yourself in Seogwipo or Jungmun.

• **West day**: Hyeopjae and Geumneung beaches, Hallim Park, Songaksan and the green tea fields around O'sulloc. Easiest by car or a day tour.

• **Hallasan day**: give it a full day on its own, ideally mid-trip so you have a weather backup.

A car makes the west far easier, but the east and south work by bus; our [Jeju without a car guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/jeju-without-a-car-bus-taxi-getting-around-guide) covers the red express buses, coastal buses 201 and 202 and taxis. For where to eat and stay on the south coast, see our [Seogwipo guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/seogwipo).
