**For most first trips, no.** The 7-day nationwide Japan Rail Pass costs **¥50,000 (≈ $317)** bought online (¥53,000 (≈ $336) through an overseas agency), and a standard Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka loop costs about ¥30,000 (≈ $190) in single tickets. The pass starts to pay when a single week includes **Hiroshima or Kanazawa on top of Tokyo and Kyoto**. Below are the regular one-way fares for the routes visitors actually ride, three sample weeks priced both ways, and the cheaper regional passes that beat the national one in Kansai. Fares were checked in October 2026 and are regular-season reserved seats.

## What the JR Pass costs in 2026

JR prices the nationwide pass by channel. Buying on the **official JAPAN RAIL PASS site** is cheapest; buying an exchange order through an overseas agency (including resellers such as Klook) costs more for the same pass.

Two catches matter more than the price. First, the pass does not cover the fastest **Nozomi and Mizuho** trains for free: pass holders buy a special Nozomi ticket, **¥4,960 (≈ $31)** one way from Tokyo or Shinagawa to Kyoto or Shin-Osaka and **¥6,500 (≈ $41)** to Hiroshima, at ticket machines or JR offices in Japan only. The slightly slower Hikari and Sakura are included. Second, the pass is **JR only**. The Odakyu Romancecar to Hakone, the Kintetsu line to Nara and the city subways are all separate fares.

| Pass (ordinary car) | Official site | Overseas agency |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 7 days | ¥50,000 (≈ $317) | ¥53,000 (≈ $336) |
| 14 days | ¥80,000 (≈ $507) | ¥84,000 (≈ $532) |
| 21 days | ¥100,000 (≈ $633) | ¥105,000 (≈ $665) |
| 7 days, Green Car | ¥70,000 (≈ $443) | ¥74,000 (≈ $469) |

## Route-by-route fares without a pass

These are the regular fares you would pay instead: base fare plus the reserved-seat express charge, one way, adult, regular season. Reserved seats cost about ¥200 (≈ $1.3) less in off-peak periods and ¥200 to ¥400 (≈ $1.3–2.5) more in peak periods (Golden Week, Obon, New Year). Non-reserved seats, where a train has them, are roughly ¥530 (≈ $3.4) cheaper.

**The Kanazawa fare is the one that moved this year.** JR East raised fares in March 2026, which took Tokyo to Kanazawa on the Hokuriku Shinkansen to **¥14,600 (≈ $92)**. The Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen fares below are JR Central's and JR West's regular fares.

| Route (one way) | Train | Regular reserved fare | Covered by JR Pass? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Tokyo to Kyoto | Nozomi, about 2h15 | ¥14,170 (≈ $90) | Hikari yes; Nozomi needs ¥4,960 (≈ $31) ticket |
| Tokyo to Shin-Osaka | Nozomi, about 2h30 | ¥14,720 (≈ $93) | Hikari yes; Nozomi needs ¥4,960 (≈ $31) ticket |
| Tokyo to Hiroshima | Nozomi, about 4h | ¥19,760 (≈ $125) | Change to Hikari/Sakura, or ¥6,500 (≈ $41) ticket |
| Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima | Nozomi or Sakura, about 1h30 | ¥10,950 (≈ $69) | Sakura and Hikari yes |
| Tokyo to Kanazawa | Kagayaki, about 2h30 | ¥14,600 (≈ $92) | Yes |
| Kanazawa to Kyoto | Tsurugi + Thunderbird, change at Tsuruga | about ¥7,500 (≈ $48) | Yes |
| Kyoto to Nara | JR Miyakoji Rapid, about 45 min | about ¥720 (≈ $4.6) | Yes |
| Kansai Airport to Kyoto | Haruka | ¥2,200 (≈ $13.9) (tourist one-way ticket) | Yes |

## Three sample weeks, priced both ways

**1. Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, back to Tokyo (the classic first trip).** Tokyo to Kyoto ¥14,170 (≈ $90), a Nara day trip about ¥1,440 (≈ $9.1) return, Osaka to Tokyo ¥14,720 (≈ $93). Total about **¥30,300 (≈ $192)**, plus a few hundred yen for local JR hops. The pass loses by roughly **¥19,700 (≈ $125)**. Buy single tickets and take the Nozomi.

**2. Add a Hiroshima day trip from Osaka.** Same loop plus Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima and back, ¥21,900 (≈ $139). Total about **¥52,200 (≈ $331)**. Now the pass is level, about **¥2,200 (≈ $13.9)** ahead before you count the JR ferry to Miyajima and local JR trains, and behind again if you buy Nozomi tickets for both Tokyo legs (¥9,920 (≈ $63)). It wins only if you are happy riding the Hikari, which adds about 25 to 40 minutes each way.

**3. A one-way loop: Tokyo, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Hiroshima, back to Tokyo in seven days.** ¥14,600 (≈ $92) + about ¥7,500 (≈ $48) + ¥11,940 (≈ $76) (Kyoto to Hiroshima) + ¥19,760 (≈ $125) = about **¥53,800 (≈ $341)**. This is where the pass clearly pays: around ¥4,000 (≈ $25) saved before local trains and the Haruka, and the itinerary keeps you on JR the whole week.

The rule of thumb: **the 7-day pass needs about ¥50,000 (≈ $317) of JR travel inside seven consecutive days.** One Tokyo to Kyoto round trip covers well under two-thirds of that. To price your own route, use our [JR Pass calculator](https://clevertourists.com/tools/jr-pass-calculator).

## Why it did not fit our 33-day route

Our own [33-day Japan route](https://clevertourists.com/resources/japan-itinerary-our-33-day-route-tokyo-to-hiroshima) shows the other common problem: a long, slow trip. Over a month, a 7-day pass covers one week, and the legs that make a Japan Alps trip special are not JR at all. Tokyo to Hakone is the Odakyu line, Matsumoto to Takayama and Takayama to Kanazawa are most direct by highway bus (see our [Kanazawa to Takayama bus guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/kanazawa-to-takayama-bus-shirakawa-go-guide)), and Hakone itself runs on its own railway, cable car and ropeway.

If you spend four days or more in each city, compare a 7-day pass against **only the long jumps inside one week**. Usually that is one or two Shinkansen rides, which single tickets cover more cheaply.

## Regional passes that beat the national one

If your trip stays in western Japan, JR West's area passes are far cheaper. The **Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass** is **¥17,000 (≈ $108)** for 5 days and covers the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima (reserved ordinary seats), the Haruka from Kansai Airport, JR lines around Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Kobe and Himeji, and the JR ferry to Miyajima. A single Osaka to Hiroshima return already costs ¥21,900 (≈ $139), so it pays for itself with that one day trip.

For Kanazawa, the **Kansai-Hokuriku Area Pass** is **¥19,000 (≈ $120)** for 7 days and covers the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tsuruga to Kanazawa and beyond, the Thunderbird and the Haruka. Note that JR West stopped selling the paper **Kansai Area Pass** on 30 September 2026; a phone-based QR version is sold through travel agencies outside Japan instead.

Check each pass's current terms on JR West's site before buying, because the published prices carry a 'subject to change' note.

## How to decide in five minutes

• **List every long JR ride in one 7-day window** and add up the fares from the table above.

• **Under ¥45,000 (≈ $285):** buy single tickets, ideally on the SmartEX app for the Tokaido and Sanyo lines (see our [Shinkansen booking guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/japan-bullet-train-shinkansen-tickets-jr-pass-guide)).

• **Around ¥50,000 (≈ $317):** the pass only wins if you will ride Hikari trains and use JR locally. Otherwise singles are simpler.

• **Over ¥55,000 (≈ $348), or Kanazawa plus Hiroshima in one week:** buy the pass on the official site and activate it on the day of your first long ride, not the day you land.

• **Western Japan only:** price the Kansai-Hiroshima or Kansai-Hokuriku pass first.

Whatever you choose, large suitcases need a reserved oversized-baggage seat on the Tokaido and Sanyo lines; see [our Shinkansen luggage rules guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/shinkansen-luggage-rules-and-oversized-baggage-booking).
