**A 12-day trip to Spain costs roughly $1,250 to $1,850 per person on a budget and $2,000 to $3,400 mid-range, including a return flight from the US.** On the ground that is about $55 to $80 a day on a budget and $120 to $210 mid-range, the bands in our [daily travel budget by country](https://clevertourists.com/resources/daily-travel-budget-by-country). Spain is one of the cheaper western European countries, but the gap between Barcelona in August and an inland or northern city is bigger than the gap between most countries. We spent about 60 days in Spain from June to August 2022, from Madrid through the north coast to Andalusia. The figures below are typical 2026 prices from official ticket pages and cost guides, not what we spent.

## Spain trip cost at a glance (12 days, per person)

The totals assume 12 days covering Madrid, Andalusia (Seville, Cordoba, Granada) and possibly Barcelona, the core of our [2-week Spain itinerary](https://clevertourists.com/resources/spain-itinerary-2-weeks). Rate used: about €0.89 to the US dollar, or $1.12 per euro, from our October 2026 snapshot.

• **Budget: about $660 to $960 on the ground**, plus the flight. Hostel dorms or cheap private rooms, menú del día lunches, buses and slower trains.

• **Mid-range: about $1,440 to $2,520 on the ground**, plus the flight. Hotel rooms shared between two, tapas dinners, high-speed rail and paid monuments.

• **Comfort:** above $210 a day. Seville or Barcelona boutique hotels in peak months have no practical cap.

The north (Oviedo, Gijon, Santander, Bilbao, which we passed through in July 2022) and inland cities such as Salamanca and Zaragoza run cheaper than the coast.

## Flights

Our October 2026 fare snapshot, built from real fares travellers found and so leaning low, shows US returns to Spain at about $585 to $880, averaging near $715, and Canada about $730 to $1,130. From the UK, Italy or Germany a return flight can cost under about $120 to $200. Australian fares are around $915 to $1,390.

Winter and shoulder months are cheaper; summer is dearest. Compare dates using [best time to visit Spain](https://clevertourists.com/resources/best-time-to-visit-spain), and read [how far in advance to book international flights](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-far-in-advance-to-book-international-flights). Spain is in Schengen, and ETIAS has not launched; as of October 2026 there is no start date, see [ETIAS and EES explained](https://clevertourists.com/resources/etias-and-ees-explained-europe-entry-2026-2027).

## Accommodation: summer coast versus the rest

Travel-cost guides in 2026 put hostel dorms in Spanish cities at roughly €20 to €40 (≈ $22–45) a night, with Barcelona at the top and smaller cities lower. Private rooms and hotels in Barcelona, San Sebastian and Seville jump in summer; our daily-budget page names these as the biggest cost.

Many places now add a nightly tourist tax. Barcelona's has risen since 1 April 2026 to €7 to €12 (≈ $7.8–13.4) per person per night by hotel type with a 7-night cap, see [Barcelona's tourist tax](https://clevertourists.com/resources/barcelona-tourist-tax-2026-rates-guide). The Basque Country adds its own tourist stay tax from 1 January 2027. Check each city before you total the nights.

Our route stayed 5 nights each in Barcelona and Seville, 4 in Madrid, Granada and Valencia, and 2 to 3 in places like Cordoba, Salamanca and Cadiz. Fewer stops in the priciest cities, with two or three in smaller ones, is the easiest saving.

## Getting around: trains, buses and passes

High-speed rail is the main trade-off between price and time. One industry-style guide reports average Madrid to Barcelona fares in late 2025 of about €96 (≈ $107) on Renfe's AVE, €77 (≈ $86) on Iryo and €61 (≈ $68) on Ouigo, with early-booked seats from the high teens and last-minute fares several times that; we could not confirm these against an operator, so check Renfe, Iryo and Ouigo for your date. Buses are slower and cheaper.

In cities the metro and buses are cheap; Madrid airport links are in [Madrid airport to city](https://clevertourists.com/resources/madrid-airport-to-city-guide) and Barcelona's in [Barcelona airport to city](https://clevertourists.com/resources/barcelona-airport-to-city-guide). Seville to Granada is covered in [Seville to Granada by bus or train](https://clevertourists.com/resources/seville-to-granada-bus-train-guide), and [Andalusia by train](https://clevertourists.com/resources/andalusia-itinerary-granada-cordoba-seville-cadiz-by-train) prices a common loop.

## Food and tickets

Food is Spain's best value. A menú del día, a three-course weekday lunch with a drink, is typically about €12 to €16 (≈ $13.4–17.9), with Catalonia at the higher end and cheaper in the north and interior. Tipping is small and optional: see [tipping in Spain](https://clevertourists.com/resources/tipping-in-spain-restaurants-bars-propina-guide). Cards are widely accepted, but read [cash or card in Spain](https://clevertourists.com/resources/cash-or-card-in-spain). Supermarket picks are in [what to buy at a grocery store in Spain](https://clevertourists.com/resources/what-to-buy-at-a-grocery-store-in-spain).

Ticket prices, from our own pages: the Alhambra General ticket is €22.27 (≈ $25) online and it includes the Nasrid Palaces, but it sells out ([Alhambra tickets](https://clevertourists.com/resources/alhambra-tickets-nasrid-palaces-booking-guide)); the Mezquita-Catedral in Cordoba is €15 (≈ $16.7), with free individual entry from 08:30 to 09:30 Monday to Saturday ([Mezquita tickets](https://clevertourists.com/resources/mezquita-cordoba-tickets-free-morning-guide)). Add Sagrada Familia if Barcelona is on the route; see [its tickets and dress code](https://clevertourists.com/resources/sagrada-familia-barcelona-dress-code-tickets-guide).

Non-EU visitors can reclaim VAT on large purchases; see [EU VAT refund for tourists](https://clevertourists.com/resources/eu-vat-refund-tourists-spain-italy-germany-guide).

## How to bring the total down

• **Travel in spring or autumn**: April to June and September to October beat August for rooms and heat; see [Spain in October](https://clevertourists.com/resources/spain-in-october-weather-what-to-do).

• **Eat the menú del día** at lunch and keep dinners light.

• **Mix the north and interior** with Madrid, Seville and Granada.

• **Book high-speed trains early**, or take the bus on short legs.

• **Budget for tourist taxes** per night in Barcelona and the Basque Country.
