**A 12-day trip to South Korea costs roughly $1,400 to $2,300 per person on a budget and $1,900 to $2,700 mid-range, including a return flight from the US.** On the ground that is about $50 to $90 a day on a budget and $85 to $120 mid-range, the ranges in our [daily travel budget by country](https://clevertourists.com/resources/daily-travel-budget-by-country). Korea usually costs less than Japan for the same trip because meals come with free banchan, city transit is cheap and palace tickets cost a few dollars; Seoul rooms and KTX fares are the main costs. We spent 32 days in South Korea in June and July 2023: Seoul, Jeonju, Suncheon, Busan, Jeju, Gyeongju and Sokcho, then back to Seoul. The prices below are typical 2026 figures from operators and travel-cost sources, not our spending.

## South Korea trip cost at a glance (12 days, per person)

The totals assume a first trip close to our [10-day South Korea itinerary](https://clevertourists.com/resources/south-korea-itinerary-10-days): Seoul, a KTX ride to Busan, a Gyeongju day and either Jeju or more Seoul at the end.

• **Budget: about $600 to $1,080 on the ground**, plus the flight. Hostels or guesthouses, local restaurants and markets, T-money transit, one or two KTX legs.

• **Mid-range: about $1,020 to $1,440 on the ground**, plus the flight. Mid-range hotels in Seoul and Busan, Korean barbecue dinners, a Jeju flight and a few paid tours.

• **Comfort: start above about $120 a day.** Five-star hotels in Gangnam or Haeundae and fine dining move the figure up quickly.

The mid-range band is narrow because Korea's costs do not scale much: a good meal and a good subway ride cost about the same whoever you are. The room is what changes.

## Flights

• **From the US:** Cathay Pacific's fare pages listed 2026 economy returns to Incheon from about $820 from Seattle, $870 from New York and $1,040 to $1,090 from Los Angeles. Korean Air and Asiana nonstops usually cost more.

• **From the UK and Australia:** fares vary widely by season and carrier; check a fare tracker against the timing advice in [how far in advance to book international flights](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-far-in-advance-to-book-international-flights).

Korea pairs well with Japan on one ticket, since short flights connect Seoul and Busan to Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka. Once you land, the cheapest way into Seoul is the AREX train or an airport bus: compare in [Incheon to Seoul, AREX vs limousine bus](https://clevertourists.com/resources/incheon-airport-to-seoul-arex-vs-airport-limousine-bus-guide).

## Entry costs: K-ETA and the arrival card

US citizens and travellers from a list of about 22 countries are exempt from K-ETA through 31 December 2026. As of late October 2026 we found no official announcement on whether the exemption continues into 2027, so check the official K-ETA site before you book a January trip; other nationalities pay the K-ETA fee shown there. The steps are in [how to apply for K-ETA](https://clevertourists.com/resources/k-eta-2027-south-korea-how-to-apply-guide), and the free arrival form is covered in [the Korea e-Arrival card guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/korea-e-arrival-card-how-to-fill-out-guide). Check [whether you need a visa](https://clevertourists.com/resources/do-i-need-a-visa-to-visit-south-korea) first.

Use only the official government sites for both. Lookalike agency sites charge extra for the same form.

## Accommodation

Seoul is the expensive base. Budget guesthouses cluster in Hongdae and around Jongno, and mid-range hotels in Myeongdong and Jung-gu put you on the airport bus lines; area-by-area trade-offs are in [where to stay in Seoul](https://clevertourists.com/resources/where-to-stay-in-seoul). Outside Seoul, Jeonju's hanok guesthouses, Gyeongju and Sokcho cost noticeably less.

Our route spent 10 days in Seoul across two stays, against 3 or 4 in each regional city. That split is a fair model for a budget: most of the room spend lands in Seoul, so the cheaper regional nights pull the average down. Jeju in summer and school holidays is the other price spike; see [how many days in Jeju](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-many-days-in-jeju).

## Transport: KTX, T-money and Jeju

A standard one-way KTX seat from Seoul to Busan costs about 59,800 won (roughly $45), around 2 hours 30 minutes; book on Korail's official site or app. Details and the cheaper slower trains are in [Seoul to Busan by KTX](https://clevertourists.com/resources/seoul-to-busan-ktx-train-tickets-time-price-guide). From Busan, [Gyeongju](https://clevertourists.com/resources/gyeongju-day-trip-from-busan-guide) is a cheap short trip.

Inside cities, a T-money card covers subways and buses at a flat base fare with transfer discounts; see [T-money and the Seoul subway](https://clevertourists.com/resources/south-korea-transit-t-money-card-subway-guide). If you stay a week or more in Seoul, compare the [Climate Card vs T-money](https://clevertourists.com/resources/south-korea-climate-card-vs-tmoney-tourist-transit-guide).

Jeju needs a domestic flight, the largest single transport cost after the international ticket. Once there, buses cover the coast for little: see [Jeju without a car](https://clevertourists.com/resources/jeju-without-a-car-bus-taxi-getting-around-guide). The east coast at Sokcho is a bus ride from Seoul; see [the Sokcho and Seoraksan day trip](https://clevertourists.com/resources/sokcho-seoraksan-day-trip-from-seoul-bus-guide).

## Food, sights and extras

Korean meals come with free refillable side dishes, so a stew or bibimbap lunch is a full meal. Markets like Gwangjang are the cheapest good eating in Seoul: see [Seoul night markets](https://clevertourists.com/resources/seoul-night-markets-street-food-guide-myeongdong-gwangjang). Barbecue is usually priced per portion with a two-portion minimum, which is where solo travellers overspend. Groceries and convenience stores are covered in [Korean grocery stores](https://clevertourists.com/resources/what-to-buy-at-a-grocery-store-in-south-korea). Tipping is not expected: [tipping in Japan and South Korea](https://clevertourists.com/resources/tipping-in-japan-and-south-korea-guide).

Sights are cheap. Adult admission to Gyeongbokgung is 3,000 won, and visitors wearing hanbok enter free. The Korea Heritage Service has said fees at the major palaces will rise from 1 January 2027, with the new schedule still to be published, so treat the 3,000 won as a 2026 price. Many temples, such as [Bongeunsa](https://clevertourists.com/resources/bongeunsa-temple-gangnam-seoul-visit-dress-code-guide) and [Jogyesa](https://clevertourists.com/resources/jogyesa-temple-seoul-dress-code-lotus-lantern-visit-guide), are free. Theme parks are the expensive exception: see [Lotte World vs Everland](https://clevertourists.com/resources/lotte-world-vs-everland-seoul-theme-park-guide).

For data, Korean navigation and taxi apps work best with mobile data; options are in [the South Korea eSIM guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/south-korea-esim-for-tourists). Add [travel insurance](https://clevertourists.com/resources/travel-insurance-for-international-trips) to the total.

## How to bring the total down

• **Avoid Seollal and Chuseok**, when transport sells out and prices rise; dates are in [Seollal 2027](https://clevertourists.com/resources/seollal-2027-korea-lunar-new-year-dates-travel-guide).

• **Spend more nights outside Seoul.** Jeonju, Suncheon and Gyeongju are cheaper and were 3-night stops on our route.

• **Skip Jeju on a short trip** if the domestic flight breaks the budget; Busan gives you the coast by train.

• **Eat lunch as your big meal**, when set menus are cheaper.
