**A 12-day trip to Morocco costs roughly $1,100 to $1,500 per person on a budget and $1,600 to $2,450 mid-range, including a return flight from the US.** On the ground that is about $30 to $50 a day on a budget and $75 to $130 mid-range, the bands in our [daily travel budget by country](https://clevertourists.com/resources/daily-travel-budget-by-country). Rooms and meals are cheap; the Sahara trip and private drivers are the costs that lift a trip out of the budget band. We spent 24 days in Morocco in August and September 2022, from Tangier and Chefchaouen through Fes, Rabat, Casablanca, Essaouira and Marrakech to Ouarzazate and Erg Chigaga. The figures below are typical 2026 prices from published guides, not what we spent.

## Morocco trip cost at a glance (12 days, per person)

The totals assume 12 days on the classic loop: Marrakech, a Sahara trip, Fes, and one of Chefchaouen or Essaouira, close to the plan in [Morocco in 7 days](https://clevertourists.com/resources/morocco-itinerary-7-days) with five more days. Rate used: about 9.8 dirhams to the US dollar, from our October 2026 snapshot.

• **Budget: about $360 to $600 on the ground**, plus the flight. Dorms or cheap riad rooms, local-cafe meals, buses and shared taxis.

• **Mid-range: about $900 to $1,560 on the ground**, plus the flight. Riads shared between two, restaurant dinners, a guided desert trip and some private transfers.

• **Comfort:** above $130 a day, easy to reach with a luxury riad or a private driver across the Atlas.

Some 2026 guides, mostly from eSIM vendors, put a budget day nearer $30 to $60, so treat the top of our band as realistic rather than the bottom.

## Flights and entry

Our October 2026 fare snapshot, built from real fares travellers found and so leaning low, shows US returns to Morocco at about $725 to $900, averaging near $820, and Canada about $760 to $1,310. From the UK it is about $110 to $210, from Spain about $105 to $195 and from France about $120 to $210. Morocco is a short budget flight from Europe, which is why it is a popular add-on to a Spain trip.

## Accommodation

A 2026 guide reports hostel dorms in Marrakech, Fes and Chefchaouen at about $8 to $12 a night, with private riad rooms from $15 to $30 at the cheap end and $60 to $100 for good mid-range riads; luxury riads run $200 to $400. Sources disagree, so check a booking site for your dates.

Our route spent 6 days in Marrakech, about 3 in Tangier and Chefchaouen each, 2 to 3 in Fes, 2 in Rabat and Essaouira, and 1 in Casablanca. For a 12-day plan, Marrakech, the desert, Fes and Chefchaouen is a manageable loop. Medina riads often include breakfast, which trims the food line.

## Getting around

Trains and CTM buses link the cities. A Marrakech to Fes bus is reported at roughly 160 to 180 dirhams (about $16 to $18), which is one source we could not check against CTM; see [Marrakech to Fes](https://clevertourists.com/resources/marrakech-to-fes-train-bus-flight-guide) and [Fes to Chefchaouen](https://clevertourists.com/resources/fes-to-chefchaouen-ctm-bus-grand-taxi-guide). Petit taxis in cities are metered but negotiate if not; day trips are in [day trips from Marrakech](https://clevertourists.com/resources/day-trips-from-marrakech) and [Marrakech to Essaouira](https://clevertourists.com/resources/marrakech-to-essaouira-bus-day-trip-guide).

Driving is cheap to hire in some cases but demanding; see [driving in Morocco](https://clevertourists.com/resources/driving-in-morocco-tourist-guide). Private drivers across the Atlas are one of the larger line items, with tipping norms in [private tour driver tipping](https://clevertourists.com/resources/morocco-private-tour-driver-tipping-guide-cash-etiquette).

## Food, the Sahara and cash

Food is cheap if you leave the main square. A tagine in a tourist restaurant on Jemaa el-Fnaa is reported at 80 to 150 dirhams, while the same dish in a small local place a couple of streets away is 30 to 50 dirhams. See [what to buy at a grocery store in Morocco](https://clevertourists.com/resources/what-to-buy-at-a-grocery-store-in-morocco) and [tipping in Morocco](https://clevertourists.com/resources/tipping-etiquette-morocco).

The Sahara is the big decision. TourRadar lists 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga trips from about $112 per person at the cheap end and around $280 for a 4-star camp, and the cheapest ones are the least comfortable. Our route went to Erg Chigaga near Zagora; compare the two dune areas in [Erg Chigaga vs Merzouga](https://clevertourists.com/resources/erg-chigaga-vs-merzouga-sahara-desert-trip-from-marrakech-guide).

The dirham is a closed currency, so plan ATM withdrawals using [the dirham and ATM guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/morocco-dirham-closed-currency-exchange-atm-guide). Haggling affects prices more than anywhere else on this list: [souk haggling and scams](https://clevertourists.com/resources/morocco-souk-haggling-etiquette-and-scams-guide).

## How to bring the total down

• **Skip the desert's most expensive camps** and book a mid-priced group trip.

• **Eat where locals eat.** One street away from the main square halves the dish price.

• **Take buses and trains** instead of private drivers.

• **Choose a riad with breakfast included.**

• **Go outside July and August** for lower prices and cooler days; see [what to pack for Morocco](https://clevertourists.com/resources/what-to-pack-for-morocco-packing-list) and [is Morocco safe](https://clevertourists.com/resources/is-morocco-safe-marrakech-scams-tourist-guide) before booking.
