**A 12-day trip to Hungary costs roughly $480 to $840 per person on the ground on a budget and $1,200 to $1,920 mid-range, plus the flight.** That is about $40 to $70 a day budget and $100 to $160 mid-range, the same bands as our [daily travel budget by country](https://clevertourists.com/resources/daily-travel-budget-by-country). The drivers are Budapest's rooms and the thermal baths; Eger and Tokaj cost less. We spent 11 days in Hungary in October 2022: 5 in Budapest, 3 in Eger and 3 in Tokaj, so the route below follows ground we covered. Hungary uses the forint (about 327 HUF to the dollar in late October 2026), not the euro. The figures are typical 2026 prices from operators and travel-cost sources, not what we spent.

## Hungary trip cost at a glance (12 days, per person)

The totals assume 12 days on the ground, per person, with two people splitting a room at mid-range. Daily bands are the same as our [daily travel budget by country](https://clevertourists.com/resources/daily-travel-budget-by-country): $40 to $70 budget and $100 to $160 mid-range.

• **Budget: about $480 to $840 on the ground**, split roughly as accommodation $170 to $290; food and drink $140 to $250; getting around $70 to $130; sights and activities $60 to $100; extras (SIM, tips, fees) $40 to $70. Dorm beds, a travelcard, lunch menus and supermarket dinners.

• **Mid-range: about $1,200 to $1,920 on the ground**, split roughly as accommodation $540 to $860; food and drink $300 to $480; getting around $140 to $230; sights and activities $140 to $230; extras (SIM, tips, fees) $70 to $120. Central Budapest hotels or apartments, restaurant dinners, a bath day and a wine-region stay.

• **With a return flight from the US** ($696 to $901 in our fare snapshot): budget about $1,200 to $1,750, mid-range about $1,900 to $2,800.

The category split is our own approximation of how a daily band divides, not a measured spend. Budapest dorm beds averaged about $19 to $22 a night in the cost guides behind our calculator.

## Flights: Budapest is a low-cost hub

Our site's fare snapshot, taken from travellers' searches around 30 October 2026, shows Budapest round trips averaging about $787 from the US (middle half $696 to $901), about $802 from Canada, $618 from South Korea, and in Europe about $125 from the UK, $107 from Italy, $133 from Germany and $139 from Spain. The snapshot leans low, so treat it as a floor. See [how far in advance to book international flights](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-far-in-advance-to-book-international-flights) for timing.

Budapest pairs naturally with Prague or Vienna by train; compare costs in [Prague vs Budapest](https://clevertourists.com/resources/prague-vs-budapest) and the [Prague to Budapest train vs bus guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/prague-to-budapest-train-vs-bus-guide), where advance train fares start around €21 to €30 (≈ $23–33).

## Accommodation: Budapest centre vs the countryside

Budapest is the cost centre. The central districts cost the most and rates drop as you move out; see [where to stay in Budapest](https://clevertourists.com/resources/where-to-stay-in-budapest). Eger and Tokaj, in the wine regions, are cheaper for the same standard.

Budapest charges a local tourist tax per person per night, collected by your host; see [Budapest tourist tax](https://clevertourists.com/resources/budapest-tourist-tax-guide). Major events push rates up sharply, so check [Budapest Grand Prix stays](https://clevertourists.com/resources/where-to-stay-for-the-hungarian-grand-prix-budapest) and [World Aquatics stays](https://clevertourists.com/resources/where-to-stay-for-the-world-aquatics-championships-budapest) if your dates are close.

## Transport: travelcards, airport bus and the vignette

A Budapest single ticket costs 500 HUF (≈ $1.5), or 700 HUF (≈ $2.1) from the driver. A 24-hour travelcard is 2,750 HUF (≈ $8.4) and a 72-hour card 5,750 HUF (≈ $17.6). The 100E airport bus costs 2,500 HUF (≈ $7.6) and is not covered by ordinary tickets or travelcards; see the [Budapest airport transfer guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/budapest-airport-to-city-center-100e-bus-taxi-guide).

If you hire a car, motorways need an e-matrica vignette: 5,550 HUF (≈ $17.0) for one day, 6,900 HUF (≈ $21) for 10 days and 11,170 HUF (≈ $34) for a month for a standard car in 2026, with a base fine of 27,790 HUF (≈ $85) if caught without one. The 10-day pass is only 1,350 HUF (≈ $4.1) more than a day, so buy it for any two-day drive; see the [Hungary vignette guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/hungary-e-matrica-vignette-tourist-guide). Day trips by train from Budapest are covered in [day trips from Budapest](https://clevertourists.com/resources/day-trips-from-budapest).

## Food, baths and sights

The thermal baths are the one big-ticket item. Official 2026 prices for Szechenyi are 13,200 HUF (≈ $40) Monday to Thursday and 14,800 HUF (≈ $45) Friday and weekends for a day ticket with a locker, with a cabin 1,000 HUF (≈ $3.1) extra and a cheaper before-9:00 ticket at 10,500 HUF (≈ $32) on weekdays; see the [Budapest thermal baths guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/budapest-thermal-baths-szechenyi-vs-rudas-gellert-guide). That is roughly $40 to $45 a visit, so one bath day can take a whole budget day.

The Budapest Card costs €53 (≈ $59) for 24 hours, €69 (≈ $77) for 48 and €85 (≈ $95) for 72 on the official site for the season running to 30 April 2027. It rarely pays for itself unless you sightsee hard; our [Budapest Card verdict](https://clevertourists.com/resources/budapest-card-worth-it) does the maths against the 72-hour travelcard. The Hungarian Parliament's visitor page lists 2026 tickets at 7,000 HUF (≈ $21) for EEA citizens and 14,000 HUF (≈ $43) for non-EEA visitors; buy the right category.

Food is the saving. Lunch menus, markets and supermarkets keep a budget day low: see [what to eat in Budapest](https://clevertourists.com/resources/what-to-eat-in-budapest) and [what to buy at a grocery store in Hungary](https://clevertourists.com/resources/what-to-buy-at-a-grocery-store-in-hungary). Service charge is often included, so check the bill before adding more: see [tipping in Budapest](https://clevertourists.com/resources/tipping-in-budapest-hungary-service-charge-guide). Avoid common tricks listed in [tourist scams in Budapest](https://clevertourists.com/resources/tourist-scams-in-budapest).

## How to bring the total down

• **Skip the Budapest Card** unless your plans clearly add up.

• **Bathe on a weekday morning.** The weekday and before-9:00 prices are the cheapest.

• **Move to Eger or Tokaj** for a few nights; our route spent 3 nights in each, and the daily cost falls there.

• **Buy the 10-day vignette**, not the day pass, if you drive.

• **Choose the shoulder season.** See [things to know before visiting Hungary](https://clevertourists.com/resources/things-to-know-before-visiting-hungary) for seasons, money and customs.
