# How many days do you need in Žabljak and Durmitor?

> Spend 2 to 3 days in Žabljak: we spent 3 in August 2023. Black Lake loop, a full day for Bobotov Kuk from Sedlo pass, and the P14 road when it is open.

**Two to three days.** We spent **3 days in Žabljak, 28 to 31 August 2023**, after Gusinje and before Nikšić. Žabljak is a small mountain town at about 1,450 m and the base for **Durmitor National Park**. One day covers **Black Lake** and the town. A second day is for the mountains: the **Bobotov Kuk** summit hike from Sedlo pass (6 to 8 hours) or the **P14 panoramic road**. A third day gives you a spare for the weather, which in Durmitor changes fast, or for the Tara canyon.

## The short answer by trip length

• **1 night:** Black Lake at dawn and the drive on. Fine if you are passing through, but you will not hike.

• **2 days:** Black Lake and the town on day one, Bobotov Kuk or the Sedlo pass road on day two. The minimum for hikers.

• **3 days:** what we had, and what we recommend: the same plus a buffer day, because afternoon storms and fog can cancel a summit attempt.

• **4 or more:** longer hikes to the other glacial lakes, rafting on the Tara, or simply mountain air after the heat of the coast.

The season decides more than the day count: the high trails and Sedlo pass are reliably clear only from about late June to September.

## Day by day: 3 days in Žabljak

**Day 1, Black Lake (Crno jezero).** Walk 20 to 30 minutes from the centre to the lake, pay the national park fee at the booth (listed at about **€5 (≈ $5.6) per person per day** in current sources), and do the flat loop of about **3.5 km** around both lobes, 1 to 1.5 hours. Go early: the water is calmest in the morning, which is also when the rowboats at the jetty are best. See our [Žabljak and Black Lake guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/zabljak-durmitor-black-lake-hike-guide).

**Day 2, Bobotov Kuk or Sedlo.** At **2,523 m**, Bobotov Kuk is the highest peak lying entirely inside Montenegro. The shorter route starts at **Sedlo pass (1,907 m)** on the P14, about 25 minutes' drive from town: roughly 10 km out and back, 6 to 8 hours, with scrambling and fixed cables near the top. Start early and turn back if storms build. If you are not hiking, drive the **P14 Durmitor Ring** over Sedlo instead; see our [P14 road guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/durmitor-p14-panoramic-road-sedlo-pass-montenegro-drive).

**Day 3, buffer day.** Use it for the summit if day two's weather failed, or for the **Tara River Canyon** on the park's northern edge, where rafting trips run in summer and the Đurđevića Tara bridge spans the gorge on the Podgorica road. Our [Žabljak guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/zabljak) covers the town and the katuns, the shepherds' huts on the high pastures.

## Where Žabljak fits in a wider route

Our Montenegro route ran from the coast into the mountains and back: **Kotor (3 days) → Štavna (2) → Gusinje (3) → Žabljak (3) → Nikšić (2) → Cetinje (1)**, then down to the coast again at Petrovac. That loop puts the mountains in late August, when the trails are open and the coast is at its hottest.

• **From Podgorica:** about 3 hours by car via Kolašin and Mojkovac. A few direct buses run each day. Podgorica is the nearest airport, and there is no railway to Žabljak.

• **From Nikšić:** about 1.5 to 2 hours via Šavnik, or in summer the longer loop through Plužine and over Sedlo, shown in our [Nikšić to Durmitor drive](https://clevertourists.com/guides/niksic-to-durmitor-drive). We went the other way, on to [Nikšić](https://clevertourists.com/guides/niksic) after Žabljak.

• **From Kotor:** it is a long inland day; most people break it in Nikšić or come via Podgorica. See [how many days in Kotor](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-many-days-in-kotor).

Mountain driving here means narrow roads, unlit tunnels and police checks: read [driving in Montenegro](https://clevertourists.com/resources/driving-in-montenegro-mountain-roads-tunnels-and-police-checkpoints) and [is the P14 safe](https://clevertourists.com/resources/driving-p14-durmitor-pass-niksic-scenic-route).

## When to go and where to stay

**Late June to September** for hiking. Snow covers the town from late autumn into spring, when Žabljak becomes a small ski resort at Savin Kuk, and the P14 over Sedlo is usually closed from about November to late May or early June. **September** is a good shoulder month, with open trails and fewer people. Summer days are mild, often in the low to mid 20s °C, but nights are cold even in August, so bring a warm layer.

Stay in central Žabljak within walking distance of the main square: you can walk to the Black Lake trailhead, and the bus and the restaurants are on hand. Food here is highland food, from kačamak to lamb; see our [Montenegrin food guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/food-montenegro).

## Costs and practicalities

• **Park fee:** about €5 (≈ $5.6) per person per day at the booth on the Black Lake road, according to current sources; older regulations set it at €3 (≈ $3.3), so check before you go.

• **Multi-park pass:** a pass for all five Montenegrin national parks for a year has been listed at €13.50 (≈ $15.0), which pays off if you also visit Lovćen, Biogradska Gora, Skadar Lake or Prokletije.

• **Getting there:** Podgorica is the nearest airport and there is no railway; buses are few, so a car gives you Sedlo and the P14.

• **Weather:** summer afternoons bring storms over the peaks; plan hikes for the morning.

Durmitor fits naturally with Prokletije on a mountain loop: our stay before Žabljak was 3 days in Gusinje, on the edge of Prokletije National Park.

## Common mistakes

• **Planning Bobotov Kuk for the only day you have.** Storms and fog are common in summer afternoons. Keep a spare day.

• **Coming before late June for the high trails.** Snow lingers on the upper slopes and the Sedlo road may still be shut.

• **Packing for the coast.** Žabljak is about 1,450 m up and nights are cold.

• **Doing it as a day trip from the coast.** It is about 3 hours from Podgorica each way; the lake and trails need at least one night.
