**Two to three days.** We spent 3 days in Osaka in April 2023, from 8 to 11 April, after 2 nights in Nara and before Kobe, Himeji and Hiroshima. Two days covers the city itself: Osaka Castle, Dotonbori after dark, Kuromon Market and Shinsekai. A third day is for Universal Studios Japan, or a day trip to Kobe (about 20 minutes by JR) or Himeji Castle (about an hour). Osaka is a food and evening city more than a sightseeing one, so plan the days light and the nights long.

## The short answer by trip length

• **1 day:** Osaka Castle in the morning, Kuromon Market for lunch, Dotonbori and Hozenji Yokocho after dark. Enough if Osaka is your last night before flying out of Kansai.

• **2 days:** the city properly. Add Shinsekai and Tsutenkaku, the Umeda Sky Building at sunset and a second evening of eating.

• **3 days:** what we had. Add Universal Studios Japan, or a day trip to Kobe or Himeji.

• **4 days or more:** use Osaka as a base for Nara, Kobe and Himeji, or a long day to Hiroshima and Miyajima.

Osaka splits into two centres, **Kita** around Umeda and Osaka Station and **Minami** around Namba and Dotonbori, joined by the Midosuji subway line in about 10 minutes. Plan each day around one of them and you lose very little time in transit.

## Day by day: 3 days in Osaka

**Day 1, Osaka Castle and Dotonbori.** Start at **Osaka Castle Park** when the keep opens at 9am. Entry to the main tower now costs **¥1,200 (≈ $7.6)** for adults, and the stone walls and moats are free to walk. In the afternoon head south to Namba, then walk the Dotonbori canal at dusk when the Glico Running Man and the moving crab signs light up. Finish in **Hozenji Yokocho**, the stone-paved alley where people splash water on the moss-covered Fudo Myo-o statue.

**Day 2, Kuromon, Shinsekai and Umeda.** **Kuromon Ichiba Market** is best before noon, when the stalls are grilling scallops, wagyu skewers and crab. Walk or take one stop to **Shinsekai**, the 1912 district under Tsutenkaku Tower, for kushikatsu at a counter (one dip in the shared sauce, never two). End the day in the north at the **Umeda Sky Building** observatory for sunset over the city.

**Day 3, choose one.** **Universal Studios Japan** fills the whole day; our [USJ Express Pass guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/universal-studios-japan-express-pass-worth-it-guide) explains timed entry and whether the pass is worth it. Or ride the JR Special Rapid to **Kobe** (about 22 minutes to Sannomiya) for Kitano-cho and a [Kobe beef lunch](https://clevertourists.com/resources/kobe-beef-lunch-price-booking-guide). Or go on to **Himeji** (about an hour) for Japan's best-preserved castle; see [Himeji Castle tickets](https://clevertourists.com/resources/himeji-castle-tickets-2026-price-hours-guide).

Our [Osaka guide](https://clevertourists.com/guides/osaka) covers each district in more detail, and [what to eat in Osaka](https://clevertourists.com/resources/what-to-eat-in-osaka) lists the dishes to look for on days one and two.

## Where Osaka fits in a wider Japan route

On our [33-day Japan route](https://clevertourists.com/resources/japan-itinerary-our-33-day-route-tokyo-to-hiroshima), Osaka came after Kyoto (4 days) and [Nara](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-many-days-in-nara) (2 days), and before Kobe (1 day), Himeji and Hiroshima. That order follows the main rail line west: Nara to Osaka-Namba is about 40 minutes on the Kintetsu Rapid Express, and from Osaka the Shinkansen reaches Hiroshima in about 1 hour 30 minutes.

Osaka is also the natural last stop of a first trip, because Kansai Airport is closer to Namba than to Kyoto. Our [7-day Japan itinerary](https://clevertourists.com/resources/japan-itinerary-7-days-first-time-tokyo-kyoto) ends with one night here for that reason. If you are choosing between basing in Kyoto or Osaka, read [how many days in Kyoto](https://clevertourists.com/resources/how-many-days-in-kyoto) first: Kyoto's temples are at their best at opening time, which is hard from Osaka, while Osaka's food streets are at their best at night, which is easy from either.

For somewhere to sleep, Namba and Shinsaibashi put you on Dotonbori's doorstep, and Umeda is better for early trains; our [where to stay in Osaka](https://clevertourists.com/resources/where-to-stay-in-osaka) guide compares them.

## How to split Osaka with Kyoto and Nara

The three cities form a triangle, each under an hour from the others, and the question is where to sleep. Our pattern, 4 nights in Kyoto, 2 in Nara and 3 in Osaka, meant every move was short and every city got its best hours: Kyoto's temples at opening, Nara's park at dawn, Osaka's streets after dark.

• **Kyoto base, Osaka day trip:** fine for Osaka Castle and Kuromon, weak for Dotonbori, which is at its best after 8pm.

• **Osaka base, Kyoto day trips:** cheaper rooms and better evenings, but you reach Kyoto's famous temples after the crowds.

• **Osaka as the last stop:** the easiest way to end a trip, because Kansai Airport is closer to Namba than to Kyoto. Our [Kansai Airport guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/kansai-airport-to-kyoto-haruka-icoca-bus-guide) covers the Haruka and the airport options.

If you have one week in Japan, give Osaka one or two nights at the end; with two weeks, two or three. Beyond that, Osaka's value is as a hub for Kobe, Himeji and a long day to Hiroshima, not as a place that needs a fourth sightseeing day.

## When to go

Late March to early April puts cherry blossom around the castle moats; we were there just after the peak, from 8 April. October and November are the other comfortable months, with clear skies and walking temperatures. Midsummer is hot and humid, which makes the open-air Dotonbori and Shinsekai evenings harder work but not impossible.

In winter, Osaka and Kobe both run illuminations; our [Japan winter illuminations guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/japan-winter-illuminations-2026-2027-tokyo-osaka-kobe-dates) has the 2026 to 2027 dates. Check the castle's hours on the day: it closes from 28 December to 1 January.

## Common mistakes

• **Treating Osaka as a day trip from Kyoto.** It works for the castle, but Dotonbori is an evening place, and the last trains back to Kyoto cut the night short.

• **Doing Kuromon in the afternoon.** Many stalls wind down by mid-afternoon, so go before lunch.

• **Booking USJ without checking the calendar.** Weekends and Japanese school holidays are the busiest days; a weekday makes far more difference than any pass.

• **Forgetting an IC card.** Pay for the subway, JR and Kintetsu with one card; our [Suica and Pasmo guide](https://clevertourists.com/resources/japan-suica-pasmo-ic-card-tourist-guide-transit-tips) explains it. Tipping is not expected in restaurants; see [tipping in Japan](https://clevertourists.com/resources/tipping-in-japan-and-south-korea-guide).
